  • Just love the way Seán plays. Fantastic exponent of the tin whistle in traditional music. Here he plays two reels with a great bodhrán player Johnny ( Ringo) McDonagh. Recorded in Taylor's Pub, Galway in 1990.

I was fortunate enough to live in Ireland for 12 months. I couldn't believe pup patrons would just came in off the streets, have a drink and then start playing music. I have never seen that happen anywhere else in the world. It was fantastic. That simply wouldn't happen here in Australia, people would think you were weird if you did that.
One time, some japanese people came into a pub I was in and started playing irish instruments and tunes. It was totally surreal. This was in a pub on Grafton St(?) that was so old the floors were buckled( I don't remember the name of it though). No one battered an eyelid and just enjoyed it.
    Fantastic country.

Only in Ireland..remember my childhood days ...everyone either played an instrument..sang or recited a story or told a tale ..as their "party piece "

lovely bit of whisteling, and the bodhran is just as understated and carrying the whistle along as any bodhran should do.
    love it pure and simple.

Irish music doesn't need to be carried by percussion. It has its own rhythm.
But the bodhrán adds nicely to the atmosphere while following the rhythm.

The details are provided in the description box under the video. Seán Ryan is probably the best and greatest traditional whistle player in Ireland. His albums are a joy to listen to.

    Great stuff!
I just started with bodhran, and had Brendan White made me a suitable one...
It seems Ringo uses the ´´Kerry style´´...wich is the most traditional style, though
I heard some players use their fingers to tip.

Johnny Ringo alone brought the bodhran into the 20th century from the stone age.

@@seankinch1609 This lovely song was written by Thom Moore. (An American who came to live in Ireland and passed away a year or two ago). Otherwise called “The Scholar”, Thom wrote this melody in 1979 based on the traditional reel “The Scholar”. Maura O’Connell sang that version of the song.

Mr. Ryan's hair touches his shoulders. He has a very modest beard. Hardly a lifetime without a haircut or shave. Your comment may be one of the most inane and insipid comments ever posted.
