they thought they could write a better story than Tolkien

  • Rings of Power is a disgrace to Tolkien. Sorry for getting heating in this video. I think it's needed. Watching this show was one of the hardest things I've done, and I could only last for 4 episodes anyway. I hope that one day we get a Tolkien story that actually lives up to the hype. And this was not it.

I watched the full series. I felt numb. Was I mistaken with my memories of Peter Jacksons movies? Did I watch them through rose tinted glassed all those years ago?
So I immediately binge watched the three movies. I cried, I laughed, I felt empathy and anger and sadness as I watched the characters. I was amazed as Middle Earth came to life.
    No.... I was not mistaken.
The Rings of Power is an abomination of JRR Tolkiens books whereas Peter Jacksons movies respected his visions.
Amazon. Please in the name of humanity stop producing this pile of excrement, that will only serve to corrupt a generation into despising everything that Tolkien has ever written.

I stopped at zero, so there's nothing for me to either love or hate. It is simply one more thing to be ignored and eventually forgotten.

looking back, the show could have been much better if they could change one thing and leave all the other crappy parts as they are. that 1 thing is to switch Galadriel's name with that of one of her daughters. the daughter who marries Elrond would have been brilliant. the character can remain just the same with all the same dialogue and acted out as it was, just make it not Galadriel, it is her daughter. and boom. the show becomes palatable.

But that would involve a level of intentionality that seems a bit beyond these showrunners.

Along the same lines, I was thinking of putting in Eltariel from the Shadow of Mordor series since they're willing to bend, even break, canon anyway. That would have made a lick of sense compared to what they did. Morfydd could bring in her nose scrunches and no one would bat an eye.

LotR clearly showed the human side of war and how far characters would go for others and what they would sacrifice for the greater good.
No one sacrifices anything in RoP, it's just about making characters look badass and portray arrogance as strength.
Tolkien has seen war, he knows men sacrifice everything to go to war and protect their family and country, meanwhile the women sacrifice a lot too by staying behind and taking care of the community. This is why HOTD succeeded, it understands the sacrifices and consequences of both men and women

That sacrifice and the respective duties of men and woman is forgotten today. Now people are selfish and just want to do what they want to do. Duty is out the window. This is why we live in a society of spoiled brats.

They wanted to air inclusivity, to highlight racism and put forward their message on gender / female representation and rights. That I have no problem with, however, they should NOT have used the work of a literary genius to cover their inadequacies of writing their own philological masterpiece. Shame on the Tolkien estate for allowing this travesty - but all they saw was dollar signs in front of their eyes. Shame, for shame!!!

      Couldn't agree more
The writing in this "show" is night and day when compared to anything in the books they apparently "adapted"

A good multi-season TV series of the Second Age could have been extracted from the LOTR appendices, Silmarillion, and other materials. It would have required good writers that wanted to be faithful not only to Tolkien's universe, but to his worldview. Writers that could be trusted to not interject modern and postmodern themes and ideas that are inconsistent with the author.
Even with writers like that, it would have been very difficult and would have taken a lot of care. It would have been necessary to work closely with Tolkien scholars who were at least as committed to staying faithful. They would have had to invent a lot of stuff, but if they stuck to the rough outline provided by canon, it could have worked.
With a show like that, I would have loved to see multiple seasons, culminating in the Battle at the Last Alliance. And if the show was good or even great, I would have loved to see them continue with an actual LOTR show. In the right hands, I honestly think a show could surpass Jackson's movies. A show could spend all the necessary time to tell the story -- never having to rush. (I do enjoy the Jackson movies and understand the compromises and tradeoffs that they had to make.)
In any case, that was a dream I had when I first heard Amazon was going to produce a Second Age series. That dream seems incredibly naïve at this point. But with the right people, I still think it could have happened.

Man hearing you describe it, it sounds amazing. Something even better than the Jackson series. It's a damn shame that the show turned into this.
And now with WB producing their own lotr movies, it seems we're going to have a bit of a lotr surplus over the coming years. We can hope and pray, but honestly I don't have much faith.

The world now more than ever needs the themes from Tolkien's stories. Instead we got the same old crap from hacks who have the hubris to believe they are better than the originals.

I love all six PJ movies, flawed in parts as they may be. But I can feel the passion and respect for the original story that they all had. They wanted to make it good. As close to the story as possible. With heart and soul.
This A. show has nothing of that. It’s just to make money using the name of Tolkien without any regard of his genius work. They’re trying to get the „old“ fans by bringing some lines from the movies. Some beloved figures that shouldn’t be there in the first place. They invent stories and try to force their views and opinions of today on everybody who may be watching. They’re trying to take us for fools.
And honestly - all dumb writing, emotionless acting and messed up time lines aside - I can not live with and accept a show where one of the most beautiful and powerful women of the original story is turned into a narcissistic entitled brat and one of the most evil characters of the whole story is more likeable than her. And presenting these two characters with even a hint of romantic interest is the biggest nonsense of all. Sorry. Not for me.

TROP is the kind of show you expect to get from first time showrunners, who continue to say they respect the lore but don't. When Peter Jackson decided to make the Lord of the Rings everyone in a high level position on the film crew had read the books over and over and loved and respected Tolkien's work. They were always mindful of the thematic content and didn't put any of their baggage into the movies because they loved the mythology as Tolkien wrote it. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are NOT fans of Tolkien's work and it shows everywhere throughout this billion dollar dumpster fire. Their intent was to do the exact opposite of what Jackson did. No one in a high level position on this show is a dedicated fan of Middle Earth. The few true experts they hired like Tom Shippey were fired for disagreeing with Payne and McKay and what they were doing to the mythology. They have not respected the thematic material, canon or lore in fact, they have completely disrespected it. The unmitigated gaul of these two amateurs believing THEY know better than Tolkien how to write the second age of Middle Earth have produced a show that is bad across the board. Bad directing, editing, pacing, storytelling, acting, dialogue and generally all aspects of cinema except the CGI, and a billion dollars worth of that SHOULD be decent. If this story had nothing to do with Tolkien it would still SUCK! That they, in their infinite lack of wisdom, decided to dump ALL their PC and Woke baggage into the singularly greatest work of fantasy fiction of all time shows just how clueless they are. They wanted their story to reflect the world we live in today. Just one problem with that boys and girls, no one reads or watches fantasy fiction to be reminded of the world they live in. In fact, it is loved because it provides an ESCAPE from the world we live in today! Middle Earth is a fictional account of an English/Northern European pre-history. There were no black elves, black dwarf women without beards, black Harfoots/Hobbits or black or asian humans because those races did not live in this English/Northern European geographic location! Diversity has to make sense within the story parameters. The showrunners are total "Bad Reboot" untalented, uninspired and unsuccessful Hollywood hacks! The season ending "big reveals were laughable. Everyone knew Meteor Man was Gandalf even though he wasn't due to appear in Middle Earth for another thousand years or so. Everyone knew Halbrand was Sauron from the moment he appeared on screen. Warrior "Guyladriel" did not exist.....ever. Tolkien's Galadriel was so much more powerful than TROP's Guyladriel because she used her intellect and sorceress powers of persuasion to get what she needed. What she didn't need was to be a sword wielding, "Mary Sue/Karen", Zena warrior princess! Bezos must certainly be feeling buyers remorse for having hired Jar Jar Abrams incompetent production team. A billion dollars for a show that could have been great but for the clown car of talentless hacks that were put in charge of it. I hope the other 4 seasons get cancelled before the next 2 years pass. Let this abomination pass into history with all the fanfare accorded an unmarked grave. That's all it deserves. RIP TROP....you suck!
