a very interesting story about the path of this song to recognition in Europe and the USA. The composition was presented to the Western public by the Ukrainian Republican Chapel under the direction of Oleksandr Koshyts, who toured on behalf of the Government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in the countries of Western Europe and North and South America in order to promote the idea of Ukrainian independence (1919-1924). The performance of the Ukrainian choir in Paris, where the Paris Peace Conference was held, was important, at which the Ukrainian delegation wanted to show that Ukraine has the right to independence, that Ukrainians are different from russians. unfortunately, the idea of Ukrainian independence was rejected by the world community, and Ukraine was occupied by communist russia

This is a children's Christmas song - a carol, traditionally on Christmas Day children used to go from house to house and sing carols, for which they were supposed to be given candy or money, like in the USA on Halloween. That's why a children's choir to me sounds more aesthetic and better - [ Дитячий хор співає "Щедрик" ].

"Shchedryk" (Ukrainian: Щедрик, from Щедрий вечiр, "Bountiful Evening") is a Ukrainian shchedrivka, or New Year's song, known in English as "The Little Swallow". It was arranged by composer and teacher Mykola Leontovych in 1916, and tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of wealth that will come with the following spring. "Shchedryk" was originally sung on the night of January 13, New Year's Eve in the Julian Calendar (December 31 Old Style), which is Shchedry Vechir. Early performances of the piece were made by students at Kyiv University. "Shchedryk" was later adapted as an English Christmas carol, "Carol of the Bells", by Peter J. Wilhousky following a performance of the original song by Alexander Koshetz's Ukrainian National Chorus at Carnegie Hall on October 5, 1921. Wilhousky copyrighted and published his new lyrics (which were not based on the Ukrainian lyrics) in 1936, and the song became popular in the United States and Canada, where it became strongly associated with Christmas. Conceptually, the Ukrainian lyrics of this song meet the definition of a shchedrivka, while the English content of "The Little Swallow" identifies it as a kolyadka or, in other words, a Christmas carol.

Most western nations sing about their own greatness.
Russia sings about "unifying" people under their rule.
Ukraine sings of love and hope. _Shchedryk_ of love of your wife and hope for spring; _Jikhav Kozak za Dunaj_ of love for your partner and hope for survival; _Stefania_ of love for your mother and hope of protection; _Shche ne vmerla Ukrainy_ of love of Ukraine and hope for freedom.
