- TW: Blood and Violence
This is my 3rd Epic the Musical Animatic. Originally titled "King", it has recently been renamed by @JayHerrans as "Odysseus" and currently stands as the 38th song of Epic the Musical.
After spoiling myself with future songs of the show, this one really stood out to me so I thought I'd take a stab at it....pun intended. There's a considerable amount of violence in this animatic, though I honestly did my best to hold back. My hubby and I plotted the scenes and believe me when I say I had to shoot down a lot of his ideas because they were too much LOL
--------- ENDING SPOILER DISCUSSION -------------
In regards to the ending, it is based solely on a theory I have of how the show will go down and is in no way confirmed to happen. But I thought it would be pretty cool if [redacted] actually witnesses Ody's murder spree. Adds a bit more drama in my opinion. Plus it's a call back to a line in [redacted]'s song.
Added clarification:
Oh, and the guy who opened the weapon room is Amphinomus, one of the named suitors (not Antinous).

I love how the "where is he?" Is exactly what is said in man of the house (which is quite ironic considering these men were trying to kill him in HIS house. He is the MAN of the house which also could correlate to the line 'when does a man become a monster'. Changing him from the man of the house to the MONSTER of the house.)
Awesome insights and observations, thank you! Actually, I haven't listened to the "Man of the House" song yet so I might just do that right now!
@ns2dstudios 1st) thank you so much for the compliment! 2nd) so sorry if this comment was abit of a spoiler!
@@acequeenofthedeck8431 No worries, I don't mind being spoiled
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed that.
@@acequeenofthedeck8431It’s already my favorite part of the song. I love recontextualized choruses/melodies like that and this one sounds so good
Remember what Athena said to Ares
He Really did made everyone bleed
To get back to his homestead, he'll make everybody bleeeeeeeeeeeeeed!!!!
"If I fight these monsters, is it you I'll find?" I'M GONA CRY
I had to! It was too good of a call back to that line to pass up
I hope Ares got the bloodshed he wanted, Athena did not lie. It's really cool how odysseous essentially became the cyclop's killing the intruders mercylessly. After dealing gods, witches, and giants against which he could do little, he finally was able to show off his power and slaughter all of em. It's really animated, as usual, and I liked the scene at the end with telemachus, I don't think another animatic has done that part yet. Good job!
Thank you! And yes, Ares wanted bloodshed, so I let the blood flow on this one. And you're right, he became ruthless like the Cyclops. And I could be wrong, but as of this writing, this is the longest (king) Odysseus animatic out there and the only one so far to include Telemachus. Thanks again for watching and for the support!
“You know boys, all this time I’ve been agonizing over throwing away my humanity and becoming a monster and if I had the will or not. But here I find you all plotting to kill my son and brutalize my wife and suddenly it’s the easiest decision I’ve had to make through this whole damned voyage.”
"You don't think I know my own palace? I built it" F'ing COLD
I absolutely love love love that line in the song!
I love that line too 🤣👏it really was just 🤌🤯
The quiet shock turning to anger at the offense is gold!
"You don't think I know my own palace? I built it!" such a hard line.
Totally!
Odysseus: Bold of you to assume I don't know my own home
I BUILT IT!!!
"Warrior of the mind" is technically a synonym for "psychological warfare"
Woah- that's a good mindset
"You don't think I know my own palace? I built it!" RAAAAA
I really like the predator vibes. Advantages means nothing if the equivalent of batman had to fight everything with disadvantaged. He knows the art of war
And the red in his eyes as he meets his son in a green tunic. He gets snapped out of his bloodlust by the contrast, his battle mentality being stopped
Thank you! I was really going for Ody being a hunter/predator and yes, Predator (movie) was one of my inspirations along with Jaws, where we actually don't see the killer until midway through the movie.
0:51 "You don't think I know my own palace? I *BUILT IT!* "
Than line was hard as a diamond!
Absolutely badass Odysseus
That was half as hard as me
This was absolutely amazing and i loved how you kept Odysseus hidden in the shadows and all we saw was his silhouette running around until he is revealed in the center 👏
Thank you! I kinda took inspiration from Jaws, where we don't get to see the "predator/hunter" until halfway through the movie. Happy you enjoyed it!
And that line of "you dont think i know my own Palouse I built it!" Was amazing!!@@ns2dstudios
@ns2dstudios can I get some context as to who these victims are
@@unicrons-wrath mostly nameless suitors of Penelope's but one of named suitors, Anphinomus is featured at the end. He was one of the more decent ones in the myth and convinced the others not to kill Telemachus. Odysseus tried to tell him to escape but he chose to stay and ultimately died.

"You don't think I know my own palace? I BUILT IT!" I love how scary Odysseus is in this song
I was definitely going for horror, with Ody as the predator/killer
THE ENDING WITH HIS SON… OMG😭
The motif was there so I had to
@@ns2dstudios And I love you for it 💗💗
He wasn't joking when he said "I'll become the monster."
"i am the monster rawr rawr rawr"🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥
The wrath of a father's rage. Shouldn't have tested it. Loved every second of this btw!
My best guess is Ody heard the suitors plotting nefarious things against his wife and son and it's what drove him to become a monster. Thanks for watching!
The fact that Telemachus is the only one who have colour-and no ordinary color, green colour! (opposite/complementary to red)
Not only does the movement of the characters felt so alive, or the fact the situation you put made so much sense here. But also the amount of detail and use of colour as lightning and highlight of the Story as a way of storytelling!? Incredible!
Thank you! Although it was mostly coincidence. Telemachus's color has been decided before I made this animatic, since I gave Ody blue, Penelope yellow, and combined, they make green (Telemachus). I like to think of it as Telemachus in green represents life amongst a sea of death (blood red). And thank you for your observations! You're the first one to point out the use of lighting and color combined so I really appreciate it that you noticed!
The fact that Oddyseus has his name repeated like how Polyphemos and Poseidon have proves that Oddyseus now is the one who hunt.
I noticed that the trail of bodies are similar to the same bodies in the "No Longer You" video when "A trail of bodies" is mentioned by the prophet. It's a brilliant to show what's to come!
Yes! So glad you caught that because it's actually the same shot but recolored for the vision/prophecy
"...I see a man with a trail of bodies!"
"WHO- oh wait..."
Imagine he starts laughing as he kills and hunts them, because this suddenly occurs to him.
“I see your palace covered in red…”
Just a little fun fact: the reason they make a point of saying "Our weapons- they're missing!" isn't just because they're missing normally. In the Odyssy, Athena turns their weapons aside when they try to throw spears at Odysseus and co.
I almost didn't notice Odysseus in the background lining up his shot
“I see your palace covered in red, faces of men who have long believed your dead!” The place covered in red is saying that he will kill his wife’s suitors and the faces of men part is implying that the suitors thought Odysseus was dead so they where trying to marry his wife at least that is what I got from that
That's pretty much how I interpreted it too.
THE DOUBLE BASS FROM 0:33
IT'S THE SAME INSTRUMENT THAT PLAYED FOR POLYPHEMUS WHEN HE WAS THE MONSTER TO FIGHT
OMG IT'S TRUE I HADN'T NOTICE IT 💥💥
GOOD EARS
Oh wow! I gotta listen to this again!
I like to think that till now we see health bars for Odyssey's enemies but when we are in the suitors pov we see his health bar
The guy dragging off into the darkness with the arrow still in his back was Severely intimidating
He wanted to make sure
almost like it was intentional or something
You know now you are badass when your enemies are singing about there dimise.
HaHAHAHA "sometimes singing is a must"
This is really shows what a badass odysseus was even after he sailed for decades.
Thank you! I wanted to show Ody as both badass and hella scary!

Odysseus: You don't think I know my own palace? *😡 I BUILT IT!! 😡*
Terrifying line right there!!!
Odysseus slayed....LITERALLY
@@ns2dstudios For real!!
I love how the background singers sing Odyssious’s name in the ‘Danger is near’ motif.
YES!!! And apparently, this isn't the first time the background singers did that. Listen to the last part of No Longer You and you can hear the singers sing Ody....sseus... twice
@@ns2dstudios Oo!! I didn’t know they definitely gonna watch it
Edit: I did find a background only video as the prophet does end up screaming at Oddy for being dumb af. I can definitely hear the back vocals/ the souls of the dead saying things idk if it’s his name or if it’s just mindless chatter to fill the space. But knowing how Jorge writes his music it may just be them saying odessous over and over again.
Possible theory: it could be the danger motif foreshadowing his rampage through his own castle killing suitors who wanted his son dead and his wife’s hand. That the prophet was correct and that oddy will change into a monster (spoiler: he does in the og sorce material he brutally kills with no remorse, Homer you sick bastered) or it’s the souls of his crew calling or to him to try and reclaim what they lost, their captain, their mission, their homes, their hope, their humanity and so they’re trying to bring him to them to reclaim it, or punish him for surviving and they didn’t.
Could be both but it’s very cool to hear it and understand everything going on in this play.
Also I have read the oddyssey years ago in middle school lmao
You don't think I know my own Palace? I built it!
When this saga actually gets released I am going to go _feral_
Absolutely love when characters go beast mode on people
Me too! Ugh! This was a challenging but really fun animatic to make!
THE WAY HE COMES UP FROM THE CENTER WHEN THEYRE BACKS ARE TURNED
No other animatic has made that line more sick than this wtf
Thank you so much! My initial plan was actually for Ody to drop down from the ceiling but I thought he would make too much noise dropping down, so yeah, rising up it is hahaha
Love how Odysseus is in the background while they’re saying “we have the numbers and the might” it’s really creative!
I love the "You don't think I know my own palace?? I BUILT IT!" line SO MUCH. It's a wonderful gotcha moment
yup! Ody was so deliciously ruthless!
STOP YOU DIDN'T NEED TO MAKE ME CRY AT THE END
There's so much potential for angst here. Telemachus feeling betrayed after growing up with all the heroic tales about his father, Odysseus shattered by guilt.....it's just...... SO MUCH DRAMA
@@ns2dstudios Do you think Telemachus would have liked Amphinomus (The only good suitor who convinced the suitors twice not to kill Telemachus) and would be guilty when hes killed alongside the other suitors? (It did say he was compelled by Athena)
@@doctorenvy9650 I imagine he would've liked Amphinomus. That's pretty much why for this animatic, I had him witness Amphinomus's death. In my head, that doubles the betrayal he feels when he sees his father, the hero he's always been told about, commit the act. ANGST!!!
@@ns2dstudios I didnt even know that was Amphi...I honestly want Telemachus to snap Odysseus out of that "I must be a Monster" mindset, because I feel bad for Amphi, I imagined he would've been Telemachus's fun uncle :(
You captured the horror element soo well, hands off this is the best animatic for King i've seen so far!!!!
0:15 Odysseus is literally watching them and planing while they’re talking about them neat detail
When Odysseus kills the last suitor, I noticed that the stroke of the slash is opposite of the slash he used on Circe in Done For. It is even framed the exact same way, the target to the right of center and Odysseus sneaking up behind them, and then the isolated slash.
BINGO! Glad you caught that. It's on purpose and I actually used the same elements from the Done For video to do the animation. In Done For, he had no intent to kill. But since here, his full intention was to kill, I made it the opposite way.
@@ns2dstudios Ha! I only noticed because I have a ton of these animatics on a playlist that I put on shuffle and they played back to back one time. I probably wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
This is why you dont FUCK WITH HIS KID
YES!!
Odysseus: don’t worry Telemachus pa-pa has got you
Wow. Barely covers it, but I'm speechless. So amazing. And Telemecus at the end? Never guessed he'd appear. Guess I need to pay attention to the music cues better. Love it.
Thank you so much! And....surprise? Hahahah when I heard the combined clips and heard Telemachus' motif, I knew I needed to add him in. Of course, the actual song could be entirely different so I will revisit and update this animatic once that's released.
The accent at "we have DE ADVANTAGE" 😭
0:10 "wi have di advANtej" is actually crazy 😭😭😭
Odysseus isn't the Boogeyman, he is the man you called to come *KILL* the Boogeyman.
Animatics of this song are always my favourite, seeing the different way people are able to perfectly portray the horror and fear that the suitors are feeling and Odysseus’ ruthlessness and terrifying presence is always so cool!
Amazing job ❤
Thank you so much! I only recently spoiled myself with the future songs and this one really screamed to be made. So happy you enjoyed it and thanks again for watching!
DUDEEEEEEEE this is soooooo cool!!!! the fact that throughout the whole thing, the only color was red until telemachus showed up with green (the contrasring color to red) is such a cool detail!! and the "if i find the monsters, is it you i'll find" sobbing. amazing work!! it's so beautiful
Thank you so much! So happy you enjoyed this! That line from Legendary really stood out to me and it was too cool of a call back to pass up. Also the green, even before I made this animatic, I had already decided on character color palettes: Ody is blue. penelope is yellow, and combined, they become green for Telemachus :) It was a happy coincidence that green and red are contrasting colors. Like Telemachus is the life (green) amongst a sea of death (red).
I love the fact you put spoiler warning in the description b/c like.... the Odyssey is thousands of years old XDDD
The spoiler warning isn't about the Odyssey itself, but about this particular interpretation of the song :)
I love that it makes me feel like I'm watching a horror movie. It looks incredibly cool! Btw, scene Telemachus in the end is heartbreaking omg😭
Yes, yes yes! Thank you! Horror is EXACTLY what I was going for so I'm so happy that's the impression you got! And I do love me some angst so I added Telemachus there (plus his theme plays in the song, so I thought....interesting....)
Oh my god “if i fight those monsters is it you ill find” insane 🤯 so good. I loved this so much

@@sharkshakes who cares about a ' mark? it delivers the same message either way, dont nitpick
...so anyone else wanna play a Death by Daylight game where you're a group of suitors trying to escape the palace while Odysseus hunts you?
I mean
Omg omg omg omg this is one of the best versions of this ive seen
Aaaah thank you! You are too kind
Is it just me who realized that now that he has turned into the monster,he has the same background vocals as polyphemus had in the cyclops saga?
Then it was "poly-phemus" now it is "Ody-sseus" while keeping the danger tune that jalapeño has mentioned? Because there is damage and a monster close by,but it isnt him who should be worried
Yeah, because it’s a boss battle for the suitors against Odysseus, and the bosses name is sung when they are introduced as a boss. For another example, look at the beginning of “Ruthlessness” Poseidon is sung seven times by the Canadians (go read Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan if you don’t get the reference) before Odysseus comes in with another Poseidon.
After several repeats of making the animatic, I definitely heard "ODY-SSEUS" being chanted. He's become the monster to save the ones he loves most. After all, ruthlessness is mercy upon himself (and his loved ones).
This is probably the best song in Epic
one of my personal favorites for sure!
Ahhh, your animatics are always so incredible!! Ody dragging the suitor into the shadows in a pool of his blood was siiiick. The reveal was sooo well done, it gave me chills! I was not ready for that ending tho, how dare you 😭
Thank you! The dragging of the suitors into the darkness was my husband's idea (one of the few ideas he had that made it to the final cut because the rest of his ideas were too intense lol) Happy you also enjoyed the Ody reveal but the ending....... let's say I'm very happy with your reaction hahahah thanks again for the support!
@@ns2dstudios Props to your husband for the idea!
THIS. IS. PERFECT. I NEED YOU TO ANIMATE THE FULL SONG AS SOON AS IT COMES OUT, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFULLY AMAZING!!!!!!
Oh definitely! I will animate the full song with the proper story based on it once it's released. Thank you so much for watching!!
AAAAAAAA THE END! I DID NOT EXPECT THAT, I'VE GOT CHILLS! :D
Hahaha glad I was able to surprise/shock you!
Odysseus's journey was hard and full of suffering but it hardened his resolve and improved his skill as a warrior
This was amazing!! The animation was so smooth and the use of blood was very intense. The moment at 1:04 onwards is especially fun and I love how you ended it with Telemachus seeing his father in a new light 🧡
Thank you! And I'm especially happy that you enjoyed the ending! I was honestly a bit apprehensive about how it will be received but I thought, what the heck, I'm gonna redo/revist/remaster this anyway once the full song comes out, so I might as well do some dramatic speculation.
absolutely incredible visuals, the feeling of this song is really stark here! It was the first time it clicked the song mirrors directly Odysseus' fight with Polyphemus all those years before, but this time he is the one attacking (it should be obvious with the chorus, but the colors and the pitch black is what made it actually click in my head)
Great observation! Odysseus has come a long way from the early days and has become the monster this time around. Gotta be ruthless if he was to save the ones he loves.
when the boss music is for the protagonist:
Okay, I'm overanalyzing the inclusion of the Legendary lyrics and you can not stop me
You could have put any lyrics there, with any arrangement, but these lyrics were the ones you chose:
If I fight those MONSTERS......is it YOU I'll find?
You did that on purpose Gwendy, I know you did.
Lets look at these lyrics first:
The original point of these lines in Legendary is to show Telemachus' admiration of his father. He's asking "If I do what they say you did, will I end up like you?" Or maybe "if I'm like you, will I be Legendary too?"
The line is different here. For starters, the way the line is formatted is noteworthy
The word "monsters" and "you" are capitalized, showing emphasis.
Paired with the visuals, the music, and the context, we get an entirely different meaning.
Telemachus isn't asking "Will I be Legendary too?" Anymore, he's asking "If I fight all those monsters, will I end up facing you?"
In other words: "are you a monster?"
There's a bit more of a hidden meaning aswell. The purpose of the line is for Telemachus to wish to be like his father, fight the beasts he fought.
If Telemachus wants to fight the beasts his father fought, and if Monster is anything to go off of, he will inevitably end up facing his father.
His fathers internal struggle with becoming the monster means that, for Telemachus to follow in Odysseus's footsteps, he must face a similar fight. Be it his own internal struggle, or a fight against the monster that his father has become.
I see you Gwendy and I enjoy your hidden meanings
I really love your analysis because not only is it well thought of, it's actually spot on. The choice of lyrics from Legendary was deliberate on my part. It's a call back to MONSTER where Odysseus has decided to truly become the monster to save the ones he loves. But also a call back to Legendary, "If I fight those MONSTERS, is it YOU I'll find?" And well...Telemachus DID fight monsters: the suitors. Only to find that his father, the hero of his mother's stories, was also a monster. And since he's always wanted to be like his father.....will he also become a monster? So much food for thought! And while I'm not confident Jay is headed in this direction for Epic, it's definitely something that's thematically sound. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
this is fantastic! love the use of red very effective and that ending?! noooooo
I love me some angst hahaha thanks for watching!
This was awesome, telamachus showing up at the end was a nice touch, but while this was great for a standalone animatic for this still not fully released song if that last guy was supposed to be anti I feel this death would kinda be a little anticlimactic for him
Thank you! I will revisit this once the full song is released with remasters, edits and of course, an extension :) And that's not Antinous. It's Amphinomus, one of the named suitors who was actually a decent guy. In the myths, he objected twice to killing Telemachus and Odysseus tried to give him a chance to leave but he decided to stay and unfortunately died along with the other suitors.
Oh ok
The fact we can see Ody's cocked arrow in the shadows at 0:15, right where he had run to in front of them just a bit ago...this is gorgeous and brilliant and amazing work! You've earned yourself a new Subscriber!
Thank you so much! Happy you caught those details! I really wanted to add that type of horror element that is subtle (not jumpscares) but more like a blink and you'll miss it moment. Thanks for the sub!

0:15 I love how you can see him in the shadows
Hahaha thank you! I had to keep him in the shadows but give him red eyes just so you can spot him when you look hard enough.
My god the fact you can see Odysseus moving in the shadows and at the 0:15 bit is so sinister and creepy. Also I love how much red is used, it's so good. ALSO THE DUDE WHO GOT DRAGGED AWAY?!?! DAMN?! Also I love how the suitors dont have visible eyes. AND OH SHIT TELEMACHUS FINDING HIM?!?!?!??!!
It always brings me so much joy whenever people catch that 15 second mark and see Odysseus. Hubby and I planned this animatic together and knew we wanted to go for the (slasher) horror vibe. He was the one who suggested having that suitor dragged away. And yes, that's Telemachus :D I don't know if this is how it'll happen in the actual song, as this is only based on snippets that were released and not the full song.
I posted another comment earlier lmao: oddy is the best war game planner, best archer, #1 warrior in Ithica, possibly in the world. and a few men thought that they could fight him? alone? in HIS OWN CASTLE, that HE built? athena should be proud now. Hes also the king of Ithica and everyone knows him.

Seeing the figure in the door my first thought was "Link?" Is this the "It’s dangerous to go alone, take this"? The dark implications of having the old man in a room filled with weapons he took from others and handing out a single sword is a bit chilling.

This means that the sentence can be applied to both of them. Telemachus has been dreaming about getting closer to his dad for quite a few songs in the musical (main example being the song Legendary) so I see that part as one of Telemachus's musings on if he protects his mom, he can be like his dad.

I am shooketh. This was visually and thematically stunning.
Was that Telemachus, his son at the end when it did the split face with Odysseus? Poor boy looks frightened.

Yeah, weird that he is frightened, as in the Odyssey he actually joins in the slaughter and kills a good few suitors.
@@halosithmaycry3529 not sure if they know each-other in this animatic, Odysseus didn't seem to recognize them at all. They haven't seen each-other for over a decade, so it would make sense if they didn't know what the other looked like.
@@Nunsensical. It does make a little sense, it definitally will when we get the full context for EPIC's telling. But it would be very strange if Jay went the route of the two not meeting until the finale, since a good chunk of the Odyssey is those two plotting how to break the news to Penelope and get revenge on the suitors, not how they get revenge per se, more like how to murder every single one of them.

The shot to the head, the DRAGGING omg, it looked like a horror movie 🤩🤩 and how Ody emerged among the suitors.. chef's kiss 👌👌
Ps: Telemachus at the end, with the "legendary" quote? Hello? 😍😍😍🤯🤯🎆🎆🎆
The dragging shot was my husband's idea! We were planning this whole animatic together and we agreed we would go for horror for sure! And Telemachus....I was really struck with how his motif was included in the song, and my mind immediately went back to that line in his song.
@@ns2dstudios well you 2 make a great team then, congrats ❤👏👏
