    The encore segment is truly amazing, there's no band, jazz or otherwise, that's making music like that...they're in class by themselves.
    There will never be another Wayne Shorter!

    L' humilité que dégage cet immense musicien n'impose que du respect et mon incommensurable admiration. Puisse la vie nous faire profiter encore longtemps de
    la musique de ce vieil homme, un des derniers géants du jazz.

    All I know is that when I hear this group play, I am glad to be alive. I feel emboldened, uplifted, yet daunted and opposed: it's rife with strife and struggle.
    But it embraces the headlong wind and tacks into it with great beauty.
    Perhaps Wayne is the only musician whose contemporary work makes me feel grateful.

    I may be exaggerating but I think this quartet is as legendary as the Charlie Parker classic quintet, the Miles quintet (both of them) and the John Coltrane quartet. Despite of the differences of course but Danilo, Patitucci and Brian Blade are among the best "jazz" musicians of our times, and Wayne is a legend.

    Shorter studied a lot of Miles Davis of course 'Trane and quite obvious in Zero Gravity especially. Those notes that seem not too 'fit' changing the color of the arrangement completely. Every young sax player needs to know well who Wayne Shorter is. As a Latin jazz fan I love Danilo Perez whose piano work does not omit the percussion roots of the piano, a seldom omission in any Latin jazz Perez is not a Latin Jazz pianist, but bangs away when called for, as any great classical pianist would. Blades is sympatico with every note in melody and improvisation of the best of old school Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones with some Haynes mixed in there it is a signature sound for sure. Dave Holland just a master craftsman with an amazing ear never cliche and wonderful taste. Outstanding ensemble would be an understatement.

    its not at all about "rock"....Rock is a form just as Wayne's music or as his drummers may form their style-their music! Do ya' feel me? Power and form/style/feel is to be held without any limitation or classification...Its not about a "last one is the rotten egg" race but rather the expression of how one interacted musically with Wayne in this piece. Any great drummer is held in the same-but different-regard.

  • @jameswebb4593
    @jameswebb4593 Před 3 lety +1

    Listened to 25 mins and enough for me . Call me old fashioned if you like , but I was weened up on Be Bop and post 50's Modern jazz. I am not knocking Shorter as I have his albums when he was a Jazz musician . Ellington summed up Jazz very succinctly " It dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing " This doesn't in any way suggest I have closed ears to progression , Eric Dolphy's " Out to Lunch " is a master piece . But that contained a lot what is missing here originality and interest.

    • @MsMojoworks
      @MsMojoworks Před rokem

      i just commented seconds ago that this music does NOT swing which a prime element of jazz. As great as the musicians are at their instrument, it appears that they play for each other and not the audience. And I fully understand that a musician has to change and grow as well, so perhaps I am not appreciative of this cosmic phase of Shorter's.

  • @georgiowee
    @georgiowee Před 11 lety

    beh: se si tratta d' una risposta free, essa è azzeccata, sebbene non la abbia capita: sarebbe meglio , dopodiciò , impegnarsi collettivamente e soggettivamente alla composizione musicale, purchè non sia così free
    Distinti saluti
    ps: ammetto che incomincia a piacermi, questo wayne shorter free, ma vorrei dei ritmetti compattati multi- impegnati

  • @ndodro
    @ndodro Před 11 lety +1

    Ma si figuri, contraddica, contraddica liberamente. Io qui vedo molta omogeneità anzicheno', ma ognuno è padrone dei propri sensi e interpreta secondo cultura ed esperienza.

  • @georgiowee
    @georgiowee Před 11 lety

    no no non sono d' accordo con questa maniera di suonare : il 95% è da scartare , via dal magnetofono dei ricordi
    un fan di wayne shorter
    ps: non me lo aspettavo cosi "free"

  • @georgiowee
    @georgiowee Před 11 lety

    si ; infatti vi è una omogeneità ma essa omogeneità "è troppo", per i miei gusti : ecco ancora

  • @georgiowee
    @georgiowee Před 11 lety

    e la omogeneità analogico armonica, sempre dicendone a riferimento di una o di alcune o di tutte le parti :ecco cosa simpatizzerei
    Beh forse
    Ciò, invece, è qualcosa del tipo:
    a) ogni elemento fa ritmi aritmici che ce ne ha voglia , free;
    b) un po' di tenore funzionale al contrabbasso
    c) una certa cura ai registri complessivi
    Insomma : a+b+c+ x , che non so definire , = non mi è simpatico
    d' altronde anche i mitici Sun Ra non mi son mai piaciuti davvero
    Distinti saluti

  • @georgiowee
    @georgiowee Před 11 lety

    no; mi dispiace un po' contraddire, ma non mi è pienamente simpatica la risultanza ; infatti non ne conosco nemmeno le procedure da Lei gentilmente segnalate; ecco detta la mia opinione
    o una omoritmicità tra le parti, ad eccezione di una o alcune o, pur' anco , tutte;
    ma allora che vi sia di soccorso una omogeneità melodico analogica, seppur a positivo carico di una o alcune o tutte le parti .

  • @johnlindstrom9994
    @johnlindstrom9994 Před 6 lety +1

    To me this is quite desultory. Not uplifting the way Trane's work was. Somewhat aimless feeling.

    • @georgedendulk3657
      @georgedendulk3657 Před 4 lety +1

      John Lindstrom, that’s mainly due to the fact that this is completely different music than Coltrane’s.
      Yes it is jazz, yes it is a quartet, but it’s it own thing. Of course coming from all that which came before.
      Jazz is an evolving genre. Today’s new jazz music is already very different from this style, although both are still considered contemporary.
      That’s the beauty of it, to me at least!
      Cheers, George

    I am guessing Brian Blade on drums, John Patitucci on bass and Danillo Perez on piano and the inimitable Wayne Shorter on Sax. At 80 Shorter still has a treasure store of music spinning in is head . Amazing....
