Really sorry to see this beautiful mature plant starting to rot from the base. But, well done for cutting it back as brave and expertly as you did, Clyde! This will save it, I am convinced! As you said, unfortunately this does occasionally happen to older plants, and it would probably not have survived in the wild. Keeping my fingers crossed that it re-roots quickly for you my friend! At the first cut, it looked a bit pale, maybe not healthy. So when I cut it the second time, I saw sap. A good sign. But that hole! So back I cut. Yes, it concerns me that it's so large and old. Maybe weak. I'd rather grow from a cutting where it joins the plant. But this is a "do or die" situation. It's shorter than when I originally bought it!! Time will tell. Thanks for watching Ziggy!!! Aww, man Clyde! Sorry to see this! I did not know that some mammillaria can secrete that euphorbia-like sap. It’s good to see that you were able to save a chunk of that plant. I lost a big portion of an echinocereus gentryi last year, that I had purchased at California Cactus Center. Still unsure what caused it to decline. Cacti are indeed mysterious creatures!
