  • I tried to use stainless steel to make the mirror. The polishing process is not very complicated, but the effect is very good!

    Nice job! can you do the same for aluminum? as I recall stainless is about 60% reflective of visible light whereas aluminum is about 90% Im trying to make a telescope mirror from a cast aluminum disc.

      @@radc7777 honestly I'm kind of scratching my head and trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, the aluminum on its own just doesn't want to take or hold a proper shape for a telescope mirror I keep getting minor asymmetries that I can't seem to polish or grind out it could be that being a solid slab of a highly thermally reactive metal that temperature changes are causing it to deform or it could just be that it's too soft which is probably why they use a good high quality glass then coat it aluminum it holds the form where is the metal is too soft or thermally reactive on its own. If I manage to figure it out and make anything that actually works I'll let you know likewise if I give up and conclude it to be a total failure I'll let you know that too so you don't waste your time.

      hello. I watched this video exactly to inspire me to make a telescope mirror. if you find a solution please tell me too. thanks

      I did have success grinding one out of glass years ago when I was about 13 my father who is who inspired my fascination of Science and astronomy worked with me and we ground an 8 inch mirror for a simple reflector. Not only was the telescope is self-success and a lot of fun to use it was a really cool experience doing that with my dad if you do decide to grind one out of glass it's a long repetitive process but if you have someone to do it with it can be a lot of fun

    Now, grab a circle with 40cm, make it parabolic, polish it, and make a dobsonian telescope with it !

    Hi excellent work indeed Just i don't understand the need of both sanding and then using the diamond paste Is just sanding not enough? Thank you very much and kind regards Gino

    • @catinabox3048
      @catinabox3048 Před rokem +2

      The sanding allows you to take away more material. Diamond paste is very fine. It's essentially a powder. If you started out with diamond paste, it would take you months to get out a scratch, but the sanding does so quickly. However, even the finest of sandpapers is not fine enough to produce a good quality mirror. As a result, you use a rougher sandpaper first to get rid of the large imperfections, and gradually work your way down to finer sandpapers, which take away smaller imperfections, and finally finish it off by diamond paste to produce that shiny reflectiveness.

      @@catinabox3048 hi thank you so much for your very kind and valuable advice
      The mirror finish is just too splendid
      I understand that diamond abrasive pastes are very expensive
      I wonder if a cheaper alternative do exist
      Like some minerals based compounds

    If I was to get a few hairline scratches that are not deep on a part the mirror finish, can I polish just that part with a very high grit without causing distortions in the reflection? Or do I need to do the whole piece of metal?
