Isabelle (Agneta Elisabeth) van Tuyll van Serooskerken [Isabelle de Charrière, Belle van Zuylen, Sophie de Charrière]
(Zuylen castle, nr Utrecht, 20 October 1740 - Colombier, 26 December 1805)
Dutch writer and composer. Son of Diederik Jacob van Tuyll van Serooskerken (1707-1776) and Jacoba Helena de Vicq (1724-1768), he was sent to Geneva and travelled through Switzerland and France with her French-speaking governess Jeanne-Louise Prevost, who was her teacher from 1746-1753. He enjoyed a much broader education than was usual for girls at that time, thanks to the liberal views of her parents who also let her study subjects like mathematics, physics and languages including Latin, Italian, German and English. By all accounts, she was a gifted student. He also interested in music, as early as 1764 she expressed a desire to study composition with Jean-Philippe Rameau, but he died the same year. In 1785 she started studying with Niccolò Zingarelli, who had just earned his first great success with his opera 'Alsinda'. On 28 May 1785 she wrote, ‘Since this first essay I have dreamt only of music’. Her letters frequently mention composers whose works she knew or wanted to get to know. In 1771, she married Charles-Emmanuel de Charrière de Penthaz (1735-1808) and was then known as Isabelle de Charrière. Her surviving compositions comprise six minuets for string quartet, nine keyboard sonatas and ten airs and romances. They do not surpass the average standard of the time, but the keyboard sonatas (originally published anonymously) show a gradual increase in the level of invention and skill.
