    Master Kanazawa is demonstrating a Goju-ryu kata using some Shotokan dynamics. This is exactly what the early masters did historically. When you are this technically advanced, the point of martial arts is to adapt the kata and bunkai to your body type and level of mental maturity. This man is a true master. I study both Shotokan and Goju, jujutsu and judo and found this performance an inspiration. He obviously understands Seiyunchin masterfully.

    I really apreciate Sensei Kanazawa and his knowledge. I know his work personally. He is great. I practice for since 15 years ago Shotokan and Goju ryu, and can say that these styles has different strategies of combat, distance and understanding of ma ai blocking and other tactics... so each kata of each style has his proper way to do because of the meaning of movements. Goju ryu is for short distance, and his blocking techniques must do with muchimi for example.
    Great respect for Kanazawa sens

    I ask all of you who comment to answer this question seriously... How many of you can claim to have stuck with anything in your lives as consistently and as vehemently as Kanazawa-sensei has stuck with his practice of Shotokan karate? How long? One year? Two? Five? Ten? Try over sixty years? The fact that he is having some fun with Shito-ryu katas is great. Why not let him enjoy his art and quit criticising? After all, what do you self-professed critics have to offer anyway?

    A point well taken. I have rarely seen a footage where some Karateka practice a kata NOT from their original style, so it's good to see somebody as well renowned as Kanazawa expanding his horizon even further. Hope I look as good when I'm over 60, this man inspires me. Simply put: OSU!

    • @shazamsakazaki

      You don't usually see them performing katas not from their major style (i wouldn't call original style, b/c it isn't true for some cases) b/c their kata performance are usually recorded as promotion for the style, or during seminars of said style
      But I bet lots of Karatekas know katas from many styles, and probably practise them during self-training. Mas Oyama did included katas from both Shotokan and Goju-ryu for his Kyokushin. Yoshizo Machida, the chief instructor of JKA Brazil branch, was a Goju-ryu Karateka before practising Shotokan as well. There is documentary series of Tatsuya Naka exploring Okinawa Karate styles. There's also footage of masters such as Yahara and Tanaka using Judo moves in sparring and kumite competition.

    Good for you Fudoshin. Keep studying. I've been doing MA for 40 years now. The differences are not as vast as you might think. There is distance ma-ai in Goju as much as there is in close fighting in Shotokan. And both use more jujutsu than most sensei know. My system combines all three. Kanazawa is not only a Shotokan master, but a karate master who knows the value of jujutsu in karate as well. He does Ibuki like breathing in Hangetsu and practices Sanchin and Tensho. An all around master.

    • @spirgtudsrubec7776
      @spirgtudsrubec7776 Před 4 lety

      @@jadekayak01 Actually Karate is very Japanese, it was originally Okinawa Te, but there was lots of changes made upon reaching mainland Japan. It was changed from a self defense into a Military based system and was also made accessible to students by way of a school curriculum. Lots of the characters were also changed to fit in with the Japanese perspective. So the Karate Of Japan is quite different to its forerunner Okinawa Te.

    • @shazamsakazaki
      @shazamsakazaki Před 2 lety

      @@jadekayak01 Goju-ryu, maybe.
      Shotokan, it definitely was Japanized. It may still be Okinawa Karate when Gichin Funakoshi first introduced it, but years on they've added so much Japanese elements to it. His son Gigo Funakoshi completed Shotokan's signature linear footwork using his kendo experience, resulting in modern Shotokan's stances becoming wider and lower compared to Gichin's. Some also added Judo's throws and ne-waza into the mix as well.
      There are also styles such as Wado-ryu that is basically mixing Karate's striking with Jujutsu's grappling (which is a Japanese thing)
      With my limited knowlegde, I think Uechi-ryu is the only style that hasn't embraced Japanese elements as of yet.

    I agree that he has the right to enjoy what he does, no questions asked about that. But nobody - ESPECIALLY a master, is untouchable. He or she should always be held to a higher standard, and should constantly be evaluated and critiqued within their discipline. If they are our teachers, we must do all we can with our limited tools to make sure they are DESERVING of being called our masters. And even if they pass muster - they are human, same as us.

    BEST ANSWER on this subject: I do not like to get in the habit of saying one style is better than others. In regards to karate as a sport-I believe tournament compeition, that while it has some benefits, it does create a mindset and habits that will not work for actual combat. I also agree that when you can not attck the joints, eyes, throat, fingers, groin, etc that a true martial artist would not be able to effectively use their style.

    Non una performance perfetta, ma una performance molto buona, per un maestro anziano che ha sempre praticato un altro stile, rispetto a quello da cui proviene questo kata...la cosa interessante, è che vedendo il video, puoi quasi intuire che kanazawa faccia shotokan, anche se non lo sai, da come usa il kime, e da come interpreta il kata secondo la sua sensibilità...ho sentito che quando ha fondato la SKIF, kanazawa ha inserito nel programma lo studio del tai chi, per rendere più "morbido" lo stile normalmente "duro" del karate shotokan...perchè fosse complementare, e questo un po' si nota in come fa i movimenti più fluidi di questo kata

  • @alessandrocattaneo4810

    Not a perfect performance, but a very good one, considering it comes from an aging master who has always practiced another style...interesting enough, by watching the video, you could almost tell that kanazawa is a shotokan, even if you didn't know, by how he uses kime, and how he gives an interpretation of the kata according to his own sensibility...i heard that when he founded the SKIF, kanazawa added to the curriculum the study of tai chi, t make more "soft" the otherwise "hard" shotokan, to compliment each other, and that's noticeable in how he performs the fluid movements of this kata

      +SteveFusionX Hi. No, unforrtunately it is taught in Shito Ryu and Goju Ryu, not Shotokan. Kanazawa probably studied it alongside other's styles kata, because he is a great master who wanted to discover new things, not limiting to a single style, even if he teaches it. Same goes for Suparinpei. Goju and Shito, not Shotokan. Shotokan is a great style, with 26 kata in its syllabus, but not those two. You could try to learn them from a Shito master, if you like. It's not written on the rock that people must limit themselves to their style.

    Clearly you went to a mcdojo and do not understand kata. You probably do those fancy tournament kata with the flips and think you know what karate is.

      Started as Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu adaped later on. There are plenty of katas shared by all styles.

      Kevin Burgess Actually "learned" and "learnt" are both correct, depending on who you're talking to. "Learned" is used moreso in American English, "learnt" by the British. The person who posted may be from the UK.

    @ernestobrennecke you should be ashamed of yourself! With such an arrogant post, you're trying to potray yourself as some high level "expert" on this kata...yet, after all that training that (supposedly) made you an "expert", you didn't learn the first and foremost thing Karate and other Japanese martial arts are aiming to teach: respect for those who came before us and who gave and achieved a lot more then we can eve dream of. What kind of a "master" is givng such gay comments about hair?

    Very bad performance... The original seyunchin is very very different... This is shotokan way to perform okinawa karate :-(

      What the fuck would you know about it you bellend? That is one of the greatest karate masters of modern times, a 10th degree soke, performing a kata as only a master can.
      Look through the comments below by all the knowledgable people who recognise this performance for what it is.
      Different schools not different styles. A true master learning a kata from a different school. The message that karate is universal.
      How DARE you - YOU a nobody, a nothing, publicly criticise a master like this and say it I a "bad performance" when you are simply too ignorant in karate and too untrained to understand what you are seeing.
      Karate begins and ends with respect.
      You, Marco Ruins-Ass, are what is wrong with karate today. Nobodys who criticise a10th dan master in public.

      Practiced Shotokan for 10 years, thinking to get back soon! I miss my masters, to be honest. Lost contact with them a long time ago. Had two, one of them used to draw for me, I still have his drawings, also used to write me poetry. Great guy, taught me a lot. And here's what Marco Ruini doesn't and will never be able to understand. The bond between the master and his students.
      The work they put in, the time they spend with pleasure in the dojo. Those things have no price tag and you simply can't evaluate them. You can tell Hirokazu didn't execute the kata perfectly and I'm sure he's aware of this as well. But who am I to judge and more importantly, who the fuck do you think you are, Marco?
      I spent 10 years and merely got to 4th Kyu which let me tell you, it is a respectable rank. So be sure this guy dedicated his whole life to this. Respect that motherfucker!

      Studied Goju for nearly 40 years & I entirely agree with your core point. Learning smething from another school will always present challenges as well as opportinuties to learn more. The fact that a Shotokan 10th dan is still willing to test both their ability & knowledge is a good thing.
