This is from their 3rd album, Check Your Head. After the sampling kerfuffle over Paul’s, they went back to playing their own instruments, and then sampled that for the beats. Also, speaking of gratitude, check their song, Gratitude! Also off of Check Your Head.

This was 90 to 92, off check you head (didn’t look it up) might be off I’ll communication a year or so later. They always has a rad Rap…punk/rock vibe to them. But think about RUN DMC, there was a lot of the same stuff going on musically. Tribe and De La flipped the script on sampling and layering it on. I’m probably wrong.

Check Your Head was when they started playing their own samples more often. Mike D played that echoey drum beat sampled in this track and MCA played upright AND electric bass (with terminator switch). Adrock might have done that fuzzy distorted guitar riff as well. This album was complete fire. Headcan candy🎧

No other group could kick it back and forth with such flow. They had the integrity and mutual respect to pull off what most acts could only dream of. Because they weren't in it for fame. They were in it because it was all they knew.

Most of the drums on the track were played live at their old studio called G-Son. MCA (RIP) was the group's bassist, but played guitar on several songs over the years including this one. 6:22 Yauch is playing guitar through a Terminator pedal, it sounds so wild. 0:51 this is a Bad Brains sample of a song called Big Takeover. They're a huge influence on Beastie Boys, they're a Jamaican hardcore band, check 'em out. Love the video!

Beastie Boys are the Beatles of hip hop. The most creative. The most eclectic. The most diverse. No nwords. They were proper musicians and innovators. Fat beats and quotable rhymes. Simply the GOATs of hip hop. No one else even comes close, including Wu-Tang and Kanye. And they're in the running for greatest American band of all time too.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this to you yet, but they actually started as a hardcore punk band before they started rapping. You should check out another song from this album called Heart Attack Man, as it is one of their punk songs. It was awesome seeing these guys on stage switch from rapping to playing some punk songs on their instruments and then switching back to rapping later in the show. They were awesome.

You really need to dip into Camp Lo 'Luchini' ASAP! It's a 90's hip hop banger with maybe the sickest beat ever. I don't think it's been reacted to much, but real Hip Hop heads will be charged up if you hit it! It's a no lose situation.

I'd really like to see you react to one of their instrumentals. That's right, on top of hip hop and punk rock, they also did songs with no lyrics where they just jammed on instruments. Check out Ricky's Theme (my favorite song of theirs) off of Ill Communication. It's a great video as well.

Okay Mr. Stax since you're already all up in my 1990s CD case--here's some underground stuff that you'd only hear on college radio or word of mouth at smaller venues during this time period:
Band name = "Rise Robots Rise". Genre = experimental hip-hop (it's not like anything else). The only song most people know from them is "If I Only Knew"--and they only know it bc famous singer Tom Jones covered it with a horrible lounge singer treatment (but it was a big hit for Tom Jones). Initial song recs would be *their* original version of "If I Only Knew" or "Talk is Cheap".

@@StaxReacts Beastie Boys are my fav band of all time too (well tie between them & the Neville Brothers who are a whole other vibe). So just trying to give you a window into stuff from that time period that you might also be into. BTW - Beastie Boys started a record label called "Grand Royal" and the 1st group they signed was an all girl band featuring Kate Schellenbach--who was a founding member of the Beastie Boys when they were a punk band. She was their drummer & kind of got dropped from the Beastie Boys when they moved to becoming a hip hop group. Her band was called "Luscious Jackson". They rock too.
