I will always love that the guard didnt wait for the Emperor to let Maximus leave, they just nod their heads and step a side in respect to him, I would guess the guards just heard the Emperor and even they are like what the hell dude. . .
Agreed, that was a small but very meaningfull detail ! It did say everything who these soldiers really did admire..
Yeah they respect Maximus. Notice how in the ending fight none of them step in to help Commodus
The nod is everything
This is so hardup it’s not even funny. What a scene. They wanted to make a sequel it’s like that makes no sense at all. It would be just a different movie.

“Time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end .. Highness.” The Mental capacity and emotional courage to disregard what the emperor said about his wife and son , to put that strength and emotion into the next final battle. Just a masterful movie through and through 🍿 🎥
His army was coming. He just had to hold back a little while longer and he would have his revenge. There was little point to taking the bait and getting himself killed prematurely and he knew it.

I love how everything Maximus does is like giving the finger to the Emperor.
lol. I think thats specifically why he spared Tigris. Just because the Emperor wanted him to kill Tigris.
Yeah.. first he didn’t salute him, then he disobeyed by not killing Tigris and finally when emperor wanted him to lose his temper and rage he instead bowed and called him your highness.
Also he had more respect from the crowd, praetorian guard, and the other gladiators than the the emperor had the authority to override.
Commodus also dragged Tigris out of retirement just to kill Maximus, so he was paying respect to Tigris' hard earned freedom and retirement by not killing him.
@@lyianxYeah, that’s wanted the creators purposely wanted you to feel like
4:25 "Maximus the Merciful!"
I love that line.
Unintentionally, Commodus made Maximus earn the nickname "The Merciful"; These kinds of nicknames were reserved for an emperor, not for a soldier and much less for a gladiator. Perhaps this situation would have made (this) Commodus go down in history as "Commodus the Cruel." Maximus not only killed Commodus but also took it upon himself to ruin his reputation in the Roman chronicles. "What we do in life, echoes in eternity!", that was what Maximus said at the beginning of the film.
That line marks one of the greatest scene in the movie.
I always loved the helmet Tigris was wearing. It's really unnerving
Yeah. I do wonder how much it limits his vision though in hand-to-hand combat. Probably would be better off fighting with the visor up
I agree, but I always wondered if it impaired his vision. How could it not?
i agree 5:00
That tear on the left eye is so trolling.
@@Lockieez no, in the fight he takes a slash to the face. Unharmed because of the mask. He doesn't need the visibility the extra protection allows him to be more aggressive
Russel Crowe did the Gladiator and the Cinderella man. The two movies that earned him a place in my heart forever

Same!
Top 5 of all time. Incredible, start to finish.
Top 5, not 2,3,4, or 5th
One of the greatest movies ever made 😊 Love Russell Crowe
Damn after commudus says that about his wife and son you can hear Maximus holding back tears in his voice. Brilliantly acted
Not tears.. Rage. Hes restraining himself pretty hard.
That's being a stoic
Hands down one of the best movies of all time.
That one guy spitting his apple😂
I've always loved 2:36 the clip of the regular people going crazy for maximus, being the underdog
It wasn't something 'Gladiator' expressed, but when I was a kid, I saw this movie and it showed a Centurion being more than a match for a great gladiator. And. Years later, I realized it because of the 'gear' matchup. Big shield. Spear. And toughness, which all those warriors, who wielded big shield and sword had, beats any combination of gladiator weaponry. Maybe the net and trident has a distant chance, cuz of net. That's why Maximus with the cool, medium shield is pretty cool to watch in action against Tigris of Gaul. He general. He choose shield. What a great movie.
One of the greatest scenes in cinema history.
A magnificent scene from the film 'Gladiator' depicting Maximus' capacity as a fighter and leader.
Tigris of Gaul is a very good friend
of mine. Sven-Ole Thorsen was the
European Karate champion in the late
80s and The strongest man in Denmark
in 1983. Champion Body Builder and
Power Lifter. He was in the First Conan
movie with Arnold and Ben Davidson.
Ben said of Sven that, if he had ever
been in the NFL, he would have torn
the place up. He certainly was made
for his roles in Conan and Gladiator.
He is also a fine fellow.
For a moment I thought you were writing the lyrics of a song, changing up "Sisko Kid was a friend of mine" to "Tigris of Gaul was a friend of mine" lol.
And i am Maximus 😂
He is also the friend of a family from where i knew a girl from. Sadly she has passed away of cancer - only 32 years old - some day i'll visit her last resting place

I fully agree with music lover's comments. Joakim deserves Oscar for his role. Because he showed the emotions so superbly - anger, jealousy, Cowardliness, cunning and untrustworthy behaviour so beautifully that we sort of developed an hatred for him. Yes he deserves an Oscar!
This is my absolute favorite film of all time!
Esa película estuvo brutal. One of the best movies I've ever watched.

One of the best fight scenes in cinema. I love the fact he’s wearing a Roman Cavalry mask with a tear in one eye. Nice touch. The fight was choreographed very well. The CGI with the tigers also isn’t bad for 2000.
Those aren't cgi lol they're actually tigers
Russell Crowe famously almost got mauled by one of them
Believe me they were real, one of the handlers got badly mauled by one of them, CGI does not do that
😂😂😂 That wasn't CGI bro
How dumb do you have to be to think those are CGI tigers 😂
I was so stoked to hear that there is going to be a sequel to this masterpiece film. And yes before any on asks. YES THERE IS GOING TO BE A PART TWO TO THIS FILM!
It won't hold up to the original film. Ridley hasn't made a great movie in decades.
Well it may not. But the only thing that we can do right now. is to just watch the original film for right now and Wait and see. Because the second film isn't coming until somewhere next year.. It might not be as good as the first. But like I said before. We have to wait and see how it comes out. @@I_like_turtles_67

Had nothing too do with it... He defied the Emperor...Something that would get you killed. But the Emperor was a chicken shit to have him killed..As he feared for his life...
If Commodus hadn't given the sign for him to die, idk if he would have spared him lol. The point was a middle finger to Commodus

Seen this in IMAX at the theater when this first came out. What an experience in 2000!
Same . Seen it with my friends in the biggest IMAX at the time in Sydney.
I enjoyed this film too in the theater with my friends when I was only 21 years old. What a time to be alive. And I enjoyed it even more at home, revisiting it with my father who had not watched it yet and got pleasantly surprised.
This film will remain the last piece of epic Hollywood historic movie making in the line of great classics such as Ben-Hur or Kubrik´s Spartacus. This film and the year 2000 do not only mark the end of an era in Hollywood but the end of the States as the leading country in the world. The 9/11 false flag attack was already on the making when this movie was released and north America would never recover from that shock, and the even more obscure fact that its citizens are living in denial since then for not chasing down the perpetrators, who are still at large in the NSA, CIA, the White House and the Fed. Reserve.
Gladiator and the year 2000 mark the end of an era, and that emphasizes the importance of this film and that crucial moment in time when the West went morally and financially bankrupt. The 2008 financial crysis and first writers guild strikes somehow gave Hollywood its final, fatal blow. It hasn´t recovered since then, and it won´t.
In my humble opinion.....this movie is a masterpiece.❤❤❤❤❤
Maximus had inner strength as well. Not playing into the cruel taunting, but calmly saying "The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end. Highness.". Epic
When the fight is rigged, and you still win.
im sad that only russel crowe won oscar for best actor..im sad ridley scott the director did not win..for me his the best director at that time
I remember me & my brother where out in Nebraska when this movie came out shooting some prairie dogs and decided on a whim to stop and see a movie before we left and headed back to Illinois .... Needless to say we were glad we did .... What a movie it just blew us away.
I realize Tigris of Gaul had been in retirement for 5 years and this certainly has to be taken into account regarding 'coliseum rust' during the fight. Despite this, he had the unfair advantages of two weapons versus 1 for Maximus and significantly more facial protection his Helmut apparatus provided.
Only seconds into the fight though it's clear that Maximus likely would have sufficiently injured him with the head strikes at 1:24 and 1:33 to render him defenseless...had he not had the reinforced facial and head protection. It would have made the additional and cruel measure of the tigers used against Maximus a moot point.
Using two weapons is most often a disadvantage unto itself, not an advantage.
That kind of helmet severely limits field of view.
Yeah bro dual wielding weapons as a gladiator was more or less a crowd pleasing tactic to demonstrate skill and get them excited. As far as head protection goes, there are pros and cons to it. Badass fight scene though
Dual-wielding is not an advantage if you are unskilled. You need to be ambidextrous and be able to use both weapons simultaneously to make it work. For the average soldier, having a shield for extra protection is much more effective.
@@AphroVenator The only situation I can think of where dual wielding has an advantage over sword (or any other appropriate weapon) and board is if at least one of the weapons you're holding is designed to *hard counter* a shield or some other vital piece of your opponent's equipment. Beyond that, dual wielding is pretty pointless.
@Aprho - Wow, I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous!
It's one of my fav movie! Can watch it over and over. That why I love my DVDs! ❤
time for Honoring oneself will soon come to an end.. One of the best quotes in the Movie...

@@AlanSmitheeman beat me to it lol
Russell did a great bit recently as a murdering redneck..
Heard his recent work in "The Pope's Exorcist" was phenomenal.
This scene reflects real life , at the time of Roman gladiators, quite well , because , actually, the winning fighter wasn't compelled to kill his losing opponent . Moreover , none of them died at the very first defeat , and this is related to economical reasons : in fact , gladiators belonged to their owners in some sort of stables and , therefore, if one of them died , it was a pecuniary loss . Archeologists recently found in Rome some inscriptions which , for example, tell us about gladiators who ended their careers alive even with four losses
As a kids me understand 0% enjoying battle 100% . Now im rewatching feeling Nostalgic
This movie Shattered my Heart into Pieces! Maximus is literally a Legendary Honourable man who would always fight for Dignity and Honour without any fear of lust! No greedy heart, Pure strength and kind heart made him the Ultimate Legend of rome while Commodus is a Failed Hero who Turned out to be a Legendary villain with broken heart and no father love. Both are Legends at their side. Russel Crowe & Joaquin Phoenix is the definition of Action. they should've won Oscar 24 years before. and Lucilla was so Hot in this Movie. Imagine How many Legendary stories made Back in Rome. History is wild sometimes.
Who knew the emperor would survive and live to become Napoleon, emperor of france
Fortunately he's now receiving the treatment he needs in Arkham Asylum.
Maximus, Maximus the Merciful!
Incredible sceane, the big guy was awesome figting and the compassion tha maximus had for him, but nothing amazing me more than commodus eyes, it's holow, without life and stripped off soul, Joaquin Phoenix is great.
Connie Nielsen's role as Lucilla is one of the great roles in movie history.
I watched this movie today and literally a masterpiece
There's a 2nd sequel to this movie, but this movie is just off the chart❤
Being able to defy the emperor as a slave in Coliseum - that’s true freedom.
I watching this great scene again...and again...and again...
I see what you did there
I feel like many people don't quite understand the level of respect that Maximus had from the legions. He was slated to be the next emperor, by choice of the people. He had fought long and hard and brought honor and glory to Rome, aspects the people valued greatly. He was betrayed, and thought lost to the barbarians. When he shows back up, the people see how he is forced to fight for his life, and he still chooses honor over an easier victory. The praetorian guard, dressed in purple, were at one point directly under his control. More than likely, he served with and commanded most of those men surrounding him. He had their respect long before they took their oaths to protect the emperor and praetors. In the eyes of the legions, he is not only their emperor also one of their praetors.
Thats not how that worked lol especially in AD Rome
It’s also a movie
The praetorian guard was under the emperor's rule, or likely more accurate, under his rule as long as he ensured their purses were full.
No….Maximus had no desire to be Emperor. And Marcus Aurelius wanted Rome to be a Republic again. With no emperor…..but to hold regular elections again for Consuls.
Remember in the movie, Marcus Aurelius had told Maximus…”Rome, is to be a Republic again.”
But Commodus put an end to that dream.
@@robertwilliamson922 Yes, that is the right narrative.
Espetacular adoro esse filme !!!
Великолепная съемка, великолепная ига актеров....
Never noticed before but the Gladiator Champion uses the heavier axe as his secondary weapon while using a lighter gladius as his main. It's normally the other way round. Interesting style that he uses the axe to parry a lot as well. Guy was probably ambidextrous or equally strong and skilled with both hands. I thought this would be rare but Maximus also switches to his off hand as well unless it is part of a technique I'm unaware of.
"equally strong"-- That man is Sven-Ole Thorsen, Bodybuilder and World's Strongest Man 1983. He was--but wasn't just--a training buddy of Arnold. He's built like Arnold himself and at the time of this movie was probably still lifting 500-800 pounds of weights in an average workout session on the regular. So yes, he was probably equally strong and skilled with both hands lol.
The armour is unrealistic along with the face visor.
@@88Musk
I was JUST thinking the same thing.
@@88Musk The visor alone would have led to his death in under 10 seconds, his field of vision was basically zero while wearing it.
@@unitedstatian He's used to fighting common folk and throttling them no matter what he wears. The armor is just fashion to keep the audience on his side. Then he met a real warrior and it all back fired.

This was one of my favorite scenes in the film. But as someone who has seen the sneak peek footage of Gladiator II, I'm beyond happy to see we finally get a reenactment of Naumachia!!! Yes, a mock naval battle in the colosseum, which did indeed happen, and they have deadly apex predators in the water of the Colosseum, just to make sure those who fall in, die. According to historical records, Nile Crocodiles and Hippos were used during this type of reenactment of naval battles the Romans won. I do hope Ridley Scott goes all out as the footage suggests and gives us a sequel that is worthy of the original Gladiator, it's hard to accomplish, but I did like the footage, so fingers crossed.
