Ain't nobody walking up to Tom Brands talking about "hey coach we got Penn state this week, I'm undefeated right now so I was thinking I could play it safe and sit out this meet" 😂
Any experienced wrestler knows it is usually harder to beat a good wrestler twice than once.
Wouldn't this fall on the coaches in the end if it was considered ducking? They make the final call on the lineups.
Seems like a good point to me… HC has the final say I would assume
It's all just a build up to those final brackets. The drama and anticipation makes for a better final show.
If it ducks like a duck, it's ducking...no matter how much folks want to explain it away.
Thanks for saying this man, people miss matches for different reasons
If I can't say "duck" anymore, I'm gonna start calling a duck-under a coffee grinder.
No. It’s wrestling. Quit duckin smoke.
Boom. If a coach and/ or wrestler is offended/ triggered by the word. That too tells you something
Go be a coach then if you think it’s that simple.
@jomama969 it is that simple. Ya gotta wrestle.
Cael said Nagao is sick, it’s been going thru the team.
people miss matches for different reasons, sure, but how many guys are sitting out versus somebody they might consider an easy win? and how hurt can you really be if you think you're well enough to wrestle an unranked guy but not well enough to wrestle a top ranked guy? you can exacerbate an injury either way.
fear of losing is real and anyone who's followed the sport knows that the top guys are wrestling fewer matches than they did even ten years ago.
maybe the ducking discourse is a good mechanism for limiting ducking.
Also a fans perspective is we buy tickets to see the big name. Give kids a bigger incentive for wrestling throughout the year
They don’t care about the fans if they are sick or injured man, why risk your post season for a dual if you’re not 100%. These people dedicate their lives to this.
@Jacknippleson1 as a former competitor. I'm aware of the nuances of the sport. I get what you want to mean. While in the competition mist you can't worry about outside noises, you have to be hyper focused. Big picture though the sport. Not individual wrestlers the sport better worry about fan support and participation. I also think fans of wrestling need to be better at supporting the sport. Just my thoughts
Ducking is the name of the game in college wrestling the past few years 8-10 years ago if a guy didn't have at least 25 matches before there conference tournament it was strange now 12-15 is the norm & 25 is rare. Psu & iowa haven't wreastled a major tournament since 2020 psu was always at southern scuffle. Iowa midlands. Nebraska & ohio state have gotten a good amount of matches.
Some valid points. I personally think there needs to be a bigger incentive for wrestling throughout the year..
Maybe the athletes aren't playing the game, but coaches are and they have to; in order to get back ups/future wrestlers matches as well as for seeding reasons...
And I believe McGee beating Barnett give Iowa reason to sit Ayala against Wisconsin and Van Dee beating Ragusin gives Cael reason to sit Nago against Michigan.. These things go into coaches decisions for sure..
It's a long season... let's not act like seeding doesn't carry any weight.
Yeah, if someone’s legitimately hurt or ill, but if you fit and ready to go, this is wrestling not badminton.
No shit
I think they should do seeding based purely on counting stats to influence the top guys to wrestle more. I hate that duals are so often wrestled with swiss cheese lineups of backups. Duals are probably my favorite part of wrestling, as a spectator it's so much fun to go and watch. Lehigh vs Cornell. Vito sat out, didn't wrestle Crookham. Maybe toss in a match requirement for NCAAs. I hate seeing NCAA Finals where someone's record for the entire year is like 12-1 or 10-0 or some shit. Require someone to wrestle in an open tournament and all but one or two duals or something. Have seeding points. My county in high school would base seeding off of counting stats (ie 4 points for a win at a dual, 1 point per win at a tournament and some more points for placing). Would like to see that. Or national duals where the seeds for that are based off of conference dual records or something so Penn State doesn't sit their entire lineup because they got a paper cut doing their homework
Did Nagao or Ayala weigh in?
Ayala wasn’t in the building supposedly
I am sorry to burst your bubble but the only criteria to seeding in the NCAA is previous podium place winners always get the seed before rankings & records. Freshman should not get a seed.
this is wholly untrue lmao. the criteria is conference tourney finish (each conference gets a certain amount of auto bids) and RPI (your win%, opponent's win%, and opponent's opponent win%, I believe).
"Freshman should not get a seed" what does that mean? Even though they wrestled during the year like everyone else, they should be randomly drawn into the bracket? Where's the logic in that? Imagine if Lee wrestled Suriano or if Yianni wrestled Meredith in the first or second round of NCAAs in 2018? Wouldn't make much sense if a freshman that beats the best guys at the weight was randomly drawn into the bracket or seeded lower than them
Than why did Brooks get the #3 last year
They aren’t ducking to gain seed advantage. They are ducking to not destroy the confidence of one wrestler and to not boost the confidence of another wrestler.
Like I said it falls on the coaches if someone does have the opinion that a wrestler is "ducking". The coaches run the team not the wrestlers.
Tom Brands often has his guys duck because he thinks his guy is worse the 2nd time out because maybe they have a tricky slide bye that works the first time but not the second.
Idk, my opinion Nagao could have went either way. As a Penn St I hope not because Cael would have had to play a part. I believe the sickness.
On the other hand, there is def ducking going on in NCAA
Ridge Lovett ducking sasso and yianni by redshirting
yeah but technically he ducked everybody by redshirting😂
I’m not sure why you’re defending this. Ducking happens. There are many advantages to it. When seeding time comes for conference tournaments, or for the big tournament in March, the number of wins and losses makes a difference, the record against shared opponents, makes a difference. If you’re number three, you don’t have to wrestle the number one guy until the finals. Seeding makes a difference. Do you honestly believe Ramirez is the only one who has ducked this year? People duck.
It’s definitely not for seeding. I mean Brooks was a 3 seed last year because he didn’t “wrestle enough”
It's not a duck if you aren't available! Do you agree?
yea
Depends on why you are not available
Yeah but what if it’s a Super Duck?
They duck becuase they have fragilie ego's and don't want to take a loss.
Ducking is killing the sport just as flow is
Ayala ducked him.
Ayala clearly ducked Barnett and you have Tom Brands to thank for that !
How about Arnold calling out Starocci saying he’d see him and then not seeing him?
Isn’t that a duck?
Arnold’s been hurt so unfortunately he only got cleared recently to wrestle again
@@thestrongestnerd4284 ah okay, didn’t hear about his injury.
@@haynwarrior2k2and he should be able to wrestle him next year
@@mattcary8075 Is Starocci coming back?
A legitimate duck was when Arnold was in street clothes at the Penn state dual and didn't compete against Carter. All smoke. Yes he's talented, but show up and get humbled.
He wanted to but he’s been injuree
Has Christina Pyles Ever Wrestled
He said on show 1000 he jumps in the air if his wife happens to meet him in a doorway….He doesn’t look physically like he could wrestle a subway sandwich.
