  • Senior Sky News Australia reporter Caroline Marcus discusses the firing of a teacher who questioned a student's claim that author J.K. Rowling was a transphobe and bigot.
A teacher was fired after his video went viral on X, where he gently challenged a student's stance on whether Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is a transphobe and bigot.
"As far as I can see, there was nothing offensive in that video," Ms Marcus told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
"In fact, I would welcome him to any school here in Australia."
"We need more of those kinds of teachers helping our children and university students develop their critical thinking skills, which are so lacking these days."

@@JohnSmith-op7ls Dismissing someone, without legal grounds to do so, or wrongful termination, aka unlawful termination, is a serious issue for Australian employers. It means that you've ended an employee's contract without a legally valid reason or without following the proper procedures. Australian workplace laws are in place to protect employees from unfair treatment in the workplace. Specific legal conditions, vary by jurisdiction and the nature of any relationship (employment, contract, etc.) are also with some degree of variability but when something is blatantly illegal, the ramifications of their actions, will change any ambivluence or ambiguity of "care". It's criminal in a certain sense, to deprive someone of their livelihood, without a very good reason for doing so.

      You're not "quoting Latin"!
You are quoting Cicero, 106-43 *BC!*
It is not "a wank" to do so, though public education from K to PhD has led generations to think so.
"Verum manere ad te", or "Stay true to yourself" is not as simplistic as some may think.
It means "Stay true to one's distinct *human ability* to investigate & think (conceptually) about principles & facts one may experience."
Too many people fail to learn from great thinkers, like Cicero, & Aristotle, and/or never learn their great understandings.

This is how teachers get I trouble. It is the same in Australia. I got in trouble for saying to a year 8 student that if she did not do her work (that meant opening her laptop) I would tell her dad (who was a teacher in the school!).
When I got suspended for that thing alone, I quit! If you want teachers that actually care about their students, start treating them with respect first. I was an excellent teacher, with amazing VCE results (several top 10 results) and well liked by students.
It is time to help our teachers, and stop blaming them every time a student (who is going through the traumatic issues of puberty) has a meltdown. This is normal for students. Unfortunately it is normal for parents to blame the teacher for these meltdowns!!

The student fell at the first hurdle, because he was put on the spot when all he was doing was asking a question. If he'd instead been asked to research it and write an essay, and then come back and discuss it, this would have gone very differently.

If there was one thing that was absolutely crucial to the DNA of the entire school, it was free and critical thinking. That's what was ingrained into our brains from day 1 until the day we graduated. I honestly think, that's the most important thing you can teach kids.
