    Hey Conor. Typing this as I watch it. I'll admit I was a little offended by the comments. However I'm watching this, and I get where you're coming from now. I was a little harsh with some of my words too, but I still love ya bud. You've always been super cool to me so I know you didn't mean it in such a negative way that it came off. So glad to know that it was just a little out of context.
    As far as the race weekend. I gave it a chance. I always enjoy IndyCar racing on TV and I'll always watch every single race. I can't say I enjoyed it though. I thought it was too short of races with not enough cars for things to really play out. I think a regular full length race would be really cool at Thermal. Especially with tire deg. I think it could be amazing if it was longer.
    Did I love seeing cars on track? I sure did. But something about it made me feel a little dissatisfied at the end of the race. It could benefit from a normal race weekend feeling, I think. Curious to know your thoughts on it. Because I do think one of the most unique things about the track was the tire deg, and I think if we let that play into the race a lot more, it could've been much more exciting!
    Another thing too, this is the first time I'm watching your show. So funny enough, your comments actually made me tune in haha. For real though, enjoying it a lot so far and can't believe I didn't watch it before now. Always felt like I kept up with IndyCar enough to not need to watch shows, but I think I'm gonna be a regular viewer now. If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

    Hi Conor, caught the episode on spotify at work today, great job! I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the Thermal Challenge, for many of the "cons" you brought up. It just wasn't exciting and it looked boring (mountains in the background didn't show well on TV, too far away) and the racing format needs some work. Great job on the pod, Chase is killing it! Love you guys, take care!

  • @caseman799

    The main part I didn't like about Thermal was that Palou dominated every lap. The heats were exciting, and the first turn was exciting. But the final race otherwise felt uneventful. I like the idea of experimental races in March and somehow postponing the season opener (for points) into April.

    • @ConorDaly22
      @ConorDaly22  Před 5 měsíci +1

    I enjoyed seeing heat races in Indycar. It brings us a little closer to our dirt track roots. Many local tracks have adopted a passing points system where your starting position in the feature race is determined by where you finished in your heat, as well as how many positions you advanced to get there. Maybe Indycar could do something similar?

    • @ConorDaly22
      @ConorDaly22  Před 5 měsíci

      That would be interesting for sure. Not sure how exactly it would be implemented at a road course but I am familiar with that system during my short stint racing on the dirt hah

    I would imagine that it would not be a big investment to IndyCar to get a staple podium construction. Something that can be transported in truck. Cool looking and maybe big screen in back where to show sponsors and drivers national flags. Then a podium interview. Make it important event too and something that fans wanna always watch too.

    I’d love to see the All-Star Race continue! But on an oval.
    Honestly Thermal Club is better as a testing track only, tbh. I gave it a chance, and I personally thought it wasn’t good. I don’t think it was a success at Thermal Club.
    Least I gave it a shot.

    The only thing I got tired of was Townsend Bell talking about the $1M homes. I know that was intentional but after the first couple of times, we got the message.
    I had no issue with the format. They just need to tweak the rules a little bit and have the race somewhere new each year. Perhaps move it to Mexico one year, Brazil the next, an oval. I would even like to see them in karts for qualifying with the main cars for the primary race.
    I did think that Fitapaldi should have gotten to race the second leg. They could have given him a penalty of some sort after lap one of the 2nd leg.

  • @jaywalker17

    For me it came down to perception. It WAS a snoozer. I understand the strategy to save tires. You can't fault Palou for running away with it. If I, as a fan who either watches or attends every race all season, was bored, it sure did not make any new fans that happened to be flipping through the channels. I would have cut the last 2 or 4 places at the end of the first segment. That would have made the racing in the back at least interesting. I think making them start light on fuel and having to make a pitstop would have been the way to go for the final segment. Emphasize the team aspect.
    And I LOVE the series. I named my son after AJ Foyt. Hell, when we decided to have kids, I counted back nine months from the 500 to make sure we didn't have a baby that weekend. I go to Road America and am excited to back at Milwaukee. BUT it doesn't feel like the series appreciates me. No one wants guaranteed starters for the 500, and yet the series seems to think it is a good idea. Just one example. Enjoyed watching this and will again. Thanks for bringing the discussion out.

    • @ConorDaly22
      @ConorDaly22  Před 5 měsíci +1

      its tough to hear that you dont think the series appreciates it's fans. I dont think that's entirely fair to say considering our series is still the most accessible professional racing series there is really. Yes, this race was not. But it's also just something new that was tried. There is definitely work to be done, that is clear, but we have an incredibly stacked field for the indy 500 in front of us, no guaranteed entries, Gerry Forsythe just bought half the Long beach grand prix so no one else can have it (big for our fans) and there is a new team potentially coming in next year which would put the field to 29 full time cars? Things to be excited about !

    @samisaarela74 Před 5 měsíci

    Yes, make it season opener for sure 🙏
    If I would be a person in command it would be like this in 2025 :
    Total prize money would be $2 million and not one point something. Even number sounds good.
    It would in short oval.
    There would be stage/party zone like in Indy does. Dj's and bands.
    I would make it be a 2 day IndyCar Festival. First day would be pr day for drivers and teams. Every team and driver would get introduction in the party zone stage .
    Then a meet& greet to get your photos and stuff signed.
    Pit crew competions.
    Other than that the first day would be about the history. I would bring many cars from the past with drivers and there would a History Race type of event.
    Day 2 is all about this day. Morning practice. Mid day qualy and afternoon the race.
    I would let the people come for free in the stndings but party zone and garage/grid access would cost something ofcourse.
    So....let's gooooo!!!!! 😅👌

    After thinking about it, I don't understand why so many had their panties in a twist over this race. It was just a practice session with a money race at the end, who cares if it was at an exclusive track, or no points were on offer. It's obvious to me they're trying to bring much needed money to the sport.
    If they do it again, flip a coin at halftime to maybe invert the field, will keep the tire saving to a minimum.
    PS: you should invite Cleetus to the 500, your YT numbers will go way up!
    PS, PS: Just heard Forsythe acquired the other half of Long Beach to keep it an Indycar event for sure, great news.

    I'm not as negative as most, but I think it felt like they were doing too much at once. I like the idea of an all star race, probably on an oval. I like the idea of a big test session at an exclusive track with broadcast coverage. The whole thing felt very strange watching from home. I agree with what others say though, it sounds like it would have been nice to attend in person especially for the reduced price.

    As someone that paid the $500 to go to the race, it didn’t feel that exclusive in terms of having the glitz and glamour that comes with a race being “exclusive”. The podium ceremony celebration was sad and hilarious that the trophy presenters were some of the home owners children

    I've had a couple run ins with Champweb. To your point they do try their best to promote the history of the sport but way to negative and honestly very pompous. I was ok with Thermal, obviously things need to be adjusted but applaud Indycar for trying something which is what the fans have been asking for. If you're going to have as much testing time they had then it's gotta be random draw for the races. Get rid of all the testing then stay with the push to pass qualifying which was entertaining. The race format is where I am still thinking about.

    • @ConorDaly22

    • @jlraces
      @jlraces Před 5 měsíci

      @@ConorDaly22 I would imagine they are able to do it since amount of OT can change depending on race but even a reverse grid race where the further back you start the more OT you get. Not sure if like 5 seconds a position makes a difference but in a 10 car heat that's 50 second difference last to first. Even 5 seconds a row
