I think the first verse refers to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album. "from San Francisco to Sausalito where they started Rumours" Mick Fleetwood found Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham in a studio in Sausalito and they recorded Rumours there..................
Oh Roddy, I've loved you since I was a girl, but what happened to those innovative chord structures and changes? Highland Hard Rain will be a part of my soul 'till I die!
He wrote those songs when he was 16 or 17 and heavily influenced by Orange Juice's "fancy" jazz chords. Thirty five years have passed and many, many other influences have made an impact on him since he was a kid. All that being said, he still writes stuff clearly in a style that's recognized by the long-time fans. Every song can't be The Bugle Sounds Again or We Could Send Letters. Trying to reproduce that formula of unexpected chord changes would just become expected at some point.
Try the album 'The Works' by Nik Kershaw. Practicaly unknown gem this album. Jazz trained, multi-instrumentalist pop writer at his peak for me (minus lady on the phone, the album is a masterpiece of progressive pop). Fantastic rythms under the vocals. czcams.com/video/pd8fTfDK-Vs/video.html

This song is so good. I've been a fan of Roddy's for a long time. My 12 year old son heard this and loves singing along to it.
Love this man....always quality since 'Just Like Gold'...16 years old when he wrote his first great pop tune and still gold.
