    Like this video for a part 2 where we’ll dive deeper into the 2-5-1 and R&B chords. Also I'd love to hear your feedback on how I can improve on this type of video and if you'd like more!

    Major and Minor 7ths (inverted) will get you that classic, sexy RNB sound. 👍🏾 Add 9th’s / Rootless Voicings for Neo-Soul. I use 6-2-5-1 alot also. Today’s Trap style RnB uses more simpler movements... like a 1-4.

      @Gonzalo Guerra A "1-4" movement is essentially playing the 1st and 4th chords of the chosen scale. For example, in C Major, you'd do a C Major (1) to F Major (4). Knowing the number system, it makes it much easier to learn all 12 keys. This is how you can start playing and breaking down RnB, Gospel, etc. It has helped me tremendously in making RnB beats. Today's RnB style (with the exception of artists like H.E.R.) use more simpler chord changes, compared to what guys like Bryan Michael Cox, DeVante Swing, Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley, etc would do.

    Very well done. Music theory that helps a beginner understand how chord progressions move. Love the way the basic chord progression actually starts on the IV and use a ii - V - I in a different key for a turn around or repeat of the chord progression. Great length for the tutorial too. Short, sweet and to the point. Guy, keep up the good work.

    I’m a church musician I utilize the Nashville number system quite extensively tbh and the way I look at it is to always view the 1 as Major at all times. The 1 being a minor is a jazz/r&b thing I understand both ways but I only go there with the learned and intricate level players . Just my 2 cents nobody asked for but I think should be noted Nashville Number System folks who swear by that system ALWAYS view things from the 1-4-5 as major, 2-3-6 as minor and that 7 is a diminished at all times no flipping or changing. Other than that u gotta new sub here like the vibe of the channel (I live in Tennessee btw lol) carry on my guy💪🏾💯

    • @stefanguy
      @stefanguy  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey brother, I totally feel you. I also started playing in the church and I've mentioned this same thing in other videos and in the comment section and have gotten heat for it haha. To me it makes no sense having different numbers for major and minor when the music doesn't change. So we always viewed the 1 as Major too. C major or A minor, G major or E minor...the notes are the same lol. I've gone back to this approach in my videos now. But tend to have to explain why. Thanks for your 2 cents, it's appreciated, no-one else has come with this logic, even though to me it makes the most sense. Especially in a band setting and on a channel for music producers. Much love brother and thanks for the sub!

    This is an awesome video on chords. It should be noted though that 2-5-1 is in just about all western music. (Pop, classical, jazz, rnb, rock, so on and so on.)
    It’s all about the circle of fifths. The 2 chord is the 5 chord of the five chord, just in a minor state. That’s why 2 draws to 5 when you play it, and 5 draws to one.

    Learn your circle of fifths or fourths and this will come much quicker and seamlessly. You can do this without thinking if you know the sequence of the circle.

    I’ve learned a number system where 0 is the root note because as you go up scales apparently starting from the one causes things to change ... I see a few people using the older system and I don’t want to get confused so I’m just going to convert yours ... Lol Thanks For Sharing ... I’m after understanding hit music and believe it has a lot to do with familiar sounds that have been proven so this helps a bit more towards that theory

  • @lambda494

    This is so great! You can extend 2-5-1 for a really common 90s R&B sound, like: ii-7 / V7 / i Maj7 / iv Maj7 / vii-7b5 / iii7 / vi-
    So in the key of C that would sound like: Dmin7 (D,F,A,C) / G7 (G,B,D,F) / CMaj7 (C,E,G,B) / FMaj7 (F,A,C,E) / Bmin7b5 (B,D,F,A) / Emin7 (E,G,B,D) / Amin (A,C,E)
    Real classic, even used in "Autumn Leaves" by Miles Davis.
