    It may be worth noting that since Rhapsodies was designed to wrap around all stories that preceded it, you can start it as early as the nation missions, and it'll actually nudge to at least complete the Shadow Lord fight, so you can get glimpses of better cutscenes and character models early on than what the nation missions are able to deliver in comparison.
    As for content for Master levels, there are specific fights for that which only get you aesthetic rewards, like alternate looks for your weapons, and are usually themed around major antagonists working together, like an Odin + Alexander fight.

      I think the content you're referring to are the master trials. The group that first cleared even the newest one had multiple people at under max level.

    I played this game for 10 years 2004-2014; some of my best videogame memories came from it: beating Dynamis Lord for the 1st time, getting sea access when there was no solid strategy on wiki, beating A.V. for the 1st time, upgrading my 1st relic, and oh those small parties lv. 75 salvage runs (they were the thrill)… but more than these feelings, FF11 helped me to overcome my father’s passing in late 2003. The things I would have done to myself were I not too busy in Vana’Diel. This game profoundly changed my life and how I experience videogames. Every so often comes a new Content Creator on youtube with some FF11 content. Nostalgia kicks in. The last one was “Hunting For Games”, who’s a huge FF11 fan, but he stopped making new content in 2022. And you, Vicenarian, you look like someone who will produce some excellent FF11 content, and I’ll be here, watching, reminiscing about the old days! I plan to get back one day and finish whatever is there to finish after Adoulin. It’s hard nowadays… i don’t even have a Windows PC anymore, but eventually, I feel that I need to get back.

    I know that the views FFXI content generates on CZcams aren't any great shakes, so it can be tough to maintain positive momentum as a creator, but I hope you continue with your coverage.
    As an XI player who started on the PS2 back in middle school, very casually, and only recently got seriously reinvested in the game, your channel is the exact type of analysis, commentary, and retrospection that I hoped existed.
    While it's a shame that XI's compelling CZcams content can be few and far between, your channel is a huge standout and you should be proud. I'll keep watching if you keep producing (and probably even if you don't, haha).

    Long time player here and I've been loving your videos. I hope it brings more players to explore this game. I've done all three nations missions but Windurst is still the best in my opinion but I believe it's because I did many side quests that link to the overall lore to FFXI and the Windurst nation. The Wings of the Goddess storyline for Windurst will always make me cry.
    Also, if you do the Artifact quests for the jobs that begin in the starting nations, many quests will give more lore to main characters to each nation. I love the BLM and SMN artifact quests because of how it links with Windy's lore. I hope you explore the Artifact armor quests down the line because the additional lore is very enjoyable and gives more appreciation to many alter egos you have access to.

    Regarding the esoteric quest direction: the Assist Channel and Mentor Program were added to facilitate that kind of information exchange in the community. Those additions and Linkshells that welcome newcomers/returners mean you can make it through the game without guides if you really want, but you'll be asking a *lot* of questions, and the people who answer are probably looking at a guide.

    Glad you decided to check out the story content for all 3 Nation Missions. I started in Bastok and after beating the Shadow Lord missions, I debated whether or not I would go up to Rank 10 at all or just move on to Zilart. I ended up beating all the Bastok missions, and then before I started Wings of the Goddess I decided to go back and beat San d'Oria and Windurst, and I'm really glad I did. While San d'Oria was a bit of a let-down if I'm being honest, Windurst felt the closest in quality to one of the expansion packs and I thought it was really excellent.
    Also, in general, I agree with how you're approaching what counts as part of an expansion and what doesn't in this series, and I'm glad you consider Rhapsodies and Voracious expansions (I've had arguments with XI fans saying they don't count). I'm very much looking forward to your commentary on Voracious in particular because there's so little discourse about it. I loved the expansion and think it's a miracle it even exists. Also looking forward to your videos on Abyssea and the Kato add-ons. Really, just looking forward to all of your videos.

    I know it's never going to happen...... partly because I don't know that there's a space for an old school MMO to exist in the current landscape.
    But, I think there could be an argument to be made to modernize FFXI (yes, even though it would be rebuilt from scratch at this point). FFXIV has gotten some goodwill for Square's MMO's. And arguably, old school MMO is a style of game that does not run the risk of competing with FFXIV as the experiences are so different.

      Part of me was actually hoping (as painful as a free to play gacha FFXI would be) that the mobile version they were developing some years back would work out, just so I could share the experience in some form with friends who couldn't parse out the PlayOnline registry process to even get into the game. For better or worse that fell through, though they bring up the possibility of an offline single player version from time to time - except that would probably be something they would release only if they were going to start shutting things down.
      The game is definitely in a weird spot right now and running entirely on the passion of the developers and remaining playerbase, enough that Squeenix - usually pretty mercenary about cutting loose anything that isn't super profitable - have willingly put resources into keeping it going, so I have hope they'll figure out some way of preserving it and making it more accessible.

      I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I think character development through the main storyline is so different in both games. XI made me feel like a part of something bigger from the beginning and carries that over different expansions. Whereas in XIV, you get this sense of main hero/savior pretty early on with the WoL powers. It breaks character immersion due to the mmo aspect. Even if I love both games. the problem with FFXI is also the problem that FFXIV faces as far as the quality of the story starting from the base game goes. not sure if this is true for other MMOs cos i don't have much experience there. but i think the difference is that FFXI isn't quite as story focused.
    in the earlier 75 cap days it was fairly common to have a majority of players who didn't do or actively try to complete missions (nation or expansion), especially if they didn't care much for story or were any sort of completionist. i still feel the nation stories don't give very much to such players from rank 6-10 (tho some of the higher rank conquest gear were decent), but SE did successfully dangle carrots to get people to do the rest.
    back when travel was slow, the airship pass from clearing Shadow Lord was what got people to clear missions. people wanted to get to Sky because of gear from Sky NMs, and when CoP was out, most people actually didn't try too hard to clear it until Sea came out (because of the CoP rings, and subsequently Limbus gear, which were extremely desirable)
    by the time ToAU came around players wizened up to the fact that zone/battle content access would likely be locked behind story and started to do it more.

    • @vicenarian340
      @vicenarian340  Před 7 měsíci +1

      That makes sense. I pointed out in my first video that, a vast majority of players on the 75 days weren't even at a level to beat the final bosses.
      This is unfortunate because, I've talked to a lot of people who simply think the story is bad in the game. I'm really hoping these videos help clear up that misconception.

And i was definitely a player who never learned the mechanics and asked to be carried on a couple bosses. And to the community's credit no one seemed to fault me for that. I just never figured out how to skill chain. I tried. I was told SAM is great for skill chaining with yourself and I tried to set up macros to pull it off but never was sure I did.
    I don't know that I'll ever return to 11. But if I do it will be to try to make an effort to engage with it's mechanics more.

      New players should never be shamed for asking for help on certain bosses. Many bosses in SoA and RoV are really difficult solo, even for players who know the combat well. The combat is definitely one of the highs of the gameplay, but it is incredibly difficult to learn. If a player feels that their time is better spent enjoying the story rather than learning the combat, there's no problem with that.
      I really appreciate hearing from fellow new players on these videos, it's been a huge encouragement!

  • @timepassesbye
    @timepassesbye Před 3 měsíci

    You said a piece about new players never fully being able to enjoy aspects of the game because of the level cap, I think the most prominent example of that is the chains of promathia expansion. The content being capped at level 30 for the earlier parts forces players to strategize and work together in ways unheard of in the modern game. Having played since the US release and through Seekers of Adoulin, I can confirm as to how amazing the game was during its prime. New players don't and justifiably cannot truly understand the sense of accomplishment of getting to zones like sky and sea. they have no understanding of the spectacle that is Odin and Alexander, the grandeur of the celestial avatars inside their crystals. back in the game's prime you had to really try to achieve goals, and while some content is still challenging, The only content that I've engaged in that brings back that feeling is master trials. The newer content, while difficult, demands a specific setup in order to be successful, and honestly that bothers me because that was one aspect of this game I've always appreciated. Comparing to XIV, jobs are clustered into roles, and each job within a role plays quite similarly. In XI, jobs can still be clustered into roles, but no 2 jobs play alike as you mentioned. While both healers, White mage and Scholar couldn't achieve their end more differently. Even when comparing jobs that do play similarly, Take warrior and dark knight, there is still a ton of skill expression that makes each shine and stand out, even if they are mostly just auto attacking and mashing their weapon skill macros. I took a few year break when xiv came out, sometime in 2013-2014 but returned to XI around 2019 and have been playing daily since. I'm honestly a little fuzzy on those dates. Coming back to XI felt like a completely different game, record of eminance was added, I don't recall when trusts came into being, item levels were added to gear, relic and AF gear had been upgraded to fit into the new meta, everything felt so different. fast forward 5 years and I watch returning players with that same shock and awe at relearning this game. For anyone interested, I highly recommend, but it's not the kind of game you play on a whim. You will not master it in a week.

      Chains of Promathia and Treasure of Aht Urhgan seemed to be hit particularly hard by the change in level cap IMO. So much in those expansions were clearly and carefully designed for the level cap. Between Assault, Besieged, and the Promyvions, playing through them today is undeniably different from what they were intended for.
      I do want to note some things though. Some guys in one of my LS have been working for months to clear v25 Bumba. They've also been trying for so long for enraged Aminon. Many of these guys are either new or returning, and the feeling of awe they report after making as much progress as they have through Sortie, or clearing a V20 NM in Odyssey, or finally clearing one of the Master Trials, is quite overwhelming for them. While it's a shame so much of the content can't be experienced like it once was, that feeling of awe the game instills isn't completely gone.

      @@vicenarian340 oh I completely agree with you, there are still some instances where you can feel that awe, but the examples you provided mostly require very cookie cutter strats in order to be successful. My sortie static still hasn’t even beaten all the basement bosses, mostly because we lack the proper party comp. Only a handful of people on my server have bumba 25 clear.

      Thanks for the comment! You're right. It's a very different game from what it used to be. It may have lost a lot from the golden era, but now it has its own set of highs and lows that are different from what they were before. These new set of highs and lows is precisely what facilitated my love for modern FFXI.

      @@vicenarian340I went back recently like earlier this year and man although I REALLY LOVE the changes, I feel like it was 14 years to late, but they didn't make the changes back then because they wanted people to go to XIV 1.0, until that bombed.
      ML is really good, well structured, but it is built for hardcore JP and some EN players and you have to have an army of bots to let you xp and grind while you sleep.
      Back in the day, if a GM caught wind of you botting, it was a wrap lol! You would get instant banned, these days you will see a party of 6 and its one guys controlling them all.
      I come from the ol'school, 75 era group. I started playing 05 and never looked back. You 10000% correct when you said that the game was built on community.
      Back in the day, if you did not have a party, or a few good friends, it was almost impossible to level and forget about getting good gear, that shit was not happening!
      XI and that style of game still till this day has many qualities that will stand the test of time, but some qualities will not.
      Just too much of a time sink for the original fan base and the new generation. If I was not able to progress personally and professionally so much doing my XI addiction, I would regret and resent my time there, but I accomplished a lot in RL so I don't feel to bad ;))

      by and large, mythic empyrean and prime weapons are all worse than grinding master levels IMO. i'm working on my prime great sword for warrior, and at the rate my group does sortie, we're poised to get me to stage 4 of 5 in 72 more sortie runs at 35k points a run. we've already easily done 200 hours or more of sortie (it's 1 hour content, 20 hour lock out) so it's easily the worst weapon category to make since you can't use gil to help make any of the steps
      back when my group was doing maybe 20k a run, we were looking at 425 runs to hit 8.5m to make a 5/5 weapon. taking over a year to make anything, while actively trying is insane. if we weren't doing 30k+ a run average i would not even have bothered to make a weapon, since you use the points to reforge your empyrean to +2 and +3

      @@TheRealGenericJeff That's really crazy! I apologize for the ignorant question, but how do you the the stage 5 primes will compare to the other REMAs? Particularly the Aeonic and Empyrean? Will they invalidate content, or are they simply be a good addition to any job?

    • @TheRealGenericJeff
      @TheRealGenericJeff Před 7 měsíci

      @@vicenarian340 stage 5 prime weapons offer triple damage on the first attack on the attack round ~16% of the time (stage 4 is double) in addition, they offer +70 stats for the WS they were given for (for example fimbulvetr is STR VIT and helheim stage 5 has 35 str and 35 vt. they are all this way)
      most aeonic weapons are pretty bad actually, and are only good in the fact they give you access to Radiance and Umbral skill chains, such that you have more incentive to weapon skill and skill chain. most players ignore skill chains to zerg down mobs and bosses typically, so aeonic weapons are not very favorable for most players (there are a few exceptions like how the 1 handed katana is the best katana for ninja to use, blade :shun is very good, Chango for warrior is also up there as well as Doji for samurai)
      the prime weapons also fill one of 2 roles as far as weapons go, Physical damage limit + after math for the user, or mage stats up after math. (magic attack, cure potency of all things on the whm club) PDL is significant because power creep means more and more players are hitting a damage wall they can not exceed, no matter how much attack you have there is an arbitrary limit to how hard you will hit, and PDL serves to boost your damage when attack capped. it's so good often times you're told to ditch Weapon skill damage + gear in exchange for PDL+ gear for weapon skilling in extreme buff scenarios.
      Empyrean weapons will see a drop in their usage i think, as all empyrean weapons have the same after math of "XX% to deal triple damage on auto attack" and while yes primes at stage 5 are like 16%, empyreans are 50% at After math level 3. (using the weapon skill at 1k gives AM1, 2k gives AM2 and 3k giving AM3)
      further more, empyrean weapons such as Verethragna for monk, will still be their best weapon due to how H2h calculations work, favoring high "white damage" (auto attacks) while weapons such as Ukonvasara and Masamune will see a drop in players using them in another year or two as more people get the prime weapons, for samurai Tachi : Mumei hits harder than Tachi: Fudo meaning Masamune will not be "required" but will still be leagues easier to get, while also Samurai's aeonic weapon, Dojikiri Yasutsuna is a weapon that does elemental hybrid damage, and will always have a place where a monster is weak to wind elemental damage (using tachi: jinpu) as jinpu easily does 99k.
      it will come down to which weapons do what for which job basically. what i can say for sure is the Staff and 1 handed axe will be the brand new BiS for BST and SMN as they boast pet level +3 allowing the avatar to achieve a level of 125 i believe, and BST jug pets to hit 124, which is a massive deal for the base pet stats they provide over their respective mythic weapons boons. the bard horn also offers 22% PDL which can be maintained with Nightingale and troubadour buffs 100% of the time, making it a must have before the bard considers the prime dagger, and the PLD shield Duban has such an insane block rate, making the empyrean shield Ochain obsolete now, while also acting in part as a diet Aegis shield.
      Prime weapons as a whole however are sadly not better than other weapons enough to justify grinding for them in my opinion, as Blue mage's Mythic weapon skill Expicacion does more damage than the Prime swords's weapon skill, as well as doing less damage than Savage blade when geared properly.
      this is all to say, it's going to depend on the job significantly, and no one tier of REMA will suddenly fall off a cliff entirely. furthermore, in about another year we will see a new DRK meta, as the prime scythe, Foernia's weapon skill Origin gives some % of damage dealt back as HP and MP, and i've personally seen Origin hit for 70k+ fully healing the MP and HP of the DRK using it.
      Each prime weapon may in turn have their uses for each job, however, they will likely be seen as "sidegrades" that don't push a job to a new height but simply supplement it in such a way that was neither necessary or asked for by players at large. they certainly will not invalidate content as the hardest content right now demands players use like attribute weaponskills to avoid skill chains lest the boss monster unleash a party wipe mechanic, such as making distortion on the boss Dhartok in Sortie, who responds by doing a conal move doing up to 99k unresistable damage as one such example.
      i do think in many ways in content where skill chaining is permitted, most weapons will see a great deal of use once enough players get their hands on them. but for now, they will merely be seen as unobtainable weapons with PDL and or pet levels on them.
