Been using super full turkey choke for any bird and buckshot and I can attest if I had to shoot slugs I'd be through a full choke but full choke is awesome but I prefer a super full turkey choke for everything else

I've started loading a 14 pellet #1 buck stacked by twos. At 40 yards with an x-full choke I consistently get 11 pellets I can cover with my hand with 3 flyers. Can't seem to stop the flyers. But I'm happy with it out of an old Mossberg 500.
More than anything I appreciate you speaking to gun safety in a practical, matter of fact way. All too often those of us that spend the most time handling firearms become the most careless and complacent, and are the inevitable victim of an avoidable accident. Keep up the good work! Love the tests.
Nice demonstration. The disclaimer at the end was extremely impressive. Each shotgun barrel will act differently. There is no such thing as a good excuse to not pattern your shotgun barrel and choke. If you have a fixed choke each brand and speed of shell can make a huge difference. Well done Alan.
Great video. Well done 👏 As you stated here the biggest take away to test your own shot gun. They’re all different. This does make me wonder though about 9 pellet 00buck. Its too bad the majority of manufacturers sell 9 pellet. I only know of hornady selling 8 pellet loads but those are rather expensive and use a versatile wad, similar to federals flite control designed for cylinder bore. I’d much rather sacrifice having one less pellet which is usually a flyer liability anyway and purchase inexpensive 8 pellet and use a full choke.
This is one of the most important things to owning a shotgun, and more important if you load yourself. Patterns can be gotten when learning to quick mount and fire, in which case gun fitment becomes an issue to look at, ie: bending stocks, trigger pull etc. Really good video with great quality advice and research. You increased the hitting power 10 fold not to mention the accuracy. Nothing like knowing how you're stickin it down range.
I have two Browning Belgium auto 5 3" Magnums w/30" full choke barrels At 30 yards I can keep 10 pellets of triple ought within about 12" which I consider not to bad. Years ago me and my brother in law tried four different shotguns two of them having changeable choke tubes all 12 Guage with a variety of buckshot brands from #1 to triple ought. The standard full chokes did the best. We did not have any supper full or turkey chokes to try. I heard that same thing about full chokes mashing up buckshot and causing bad patterns but I have not seen this in my personal shooting.
I have always shot 00 buckshot in 3-inch magnum with a modified chock. Every gun I have had over the years no matter if it was a 28-inch barrel or a 30-inch barrel. No matter what brand of shell I used Remington to Winchester to whatever and the last shotgun I got was a Remington 1187 with a 30inch barrel and it is by far the best shotgun I have ever shot. I have taken many deer with it using the modified chock and used the full chock shooting number 8 bird shot to win my share of what we call turkey shoots where we shoot a target and the one closest to the center wins a turkey. We usually have them around thanksgiving and Christmas here in the South they are fun and usually cost between 3 to 5 dollars each round .

We have a judge that measures the results and if there are more than one that he can't tell which is closer to the center after measuring we have a shoot off till one winner is clear. We aren't allowed to use aftermarket chocks at most events only factory chocks .
Yep, I figured as much. I just bought a short barrel Winchester SXP and my 00 buck was patterning over 2 feet at 30 yards. I ordered a extra full choke. .665 is the squeeze. I can't wait to see how much it brings in that spread.
I have been making the full choke argument for 50+ years with my friends. I however use 3" #1 buck, I find that while I naturally do get a wider pattern with the #1 I will gets more hits in the circle. I have been using #1 ever since I went out of state hunting and forgot to bring my ammo. The local walmart did not have OO so I took the #1. Well the next day I dropped the biggest buck of my life in his tracks with one shot at 20+ yds. Since then I have dropped every deer I pulled the trigger on with 1 shot with 1 exception. He ran about 50 yds. before he stopped and I did not want to take a chance of him running again as I was on a small hobby farm in a populated area and doubled tapped him, end of story. The rest: one shot one kill out to and past 50 yds. I still have that open box of 00 sitting in my gun case that I have not used since I forgot it there 30 years ago. #1 BUCKSHOT RULES IT IS BY FAR THE MOST DEADLY AMMO YOU CAN USE TO 50 YDS. AND A BIT BEYOND.
My Mossberg 835 Ulti Magnum has a warning to not use Slugs. I haven’t tried buckshot yet. It’s actually comes with an extra full Turkey choke. I could buy an ordinary full choke for buckshot if I want to have a home defense load. Police train with 15 yard Q Targets with cylinder bore 12 gauge 870 Pump Shotguns. We used Federal Tactical 00 Buck. Most pellets were within the Q target at 15 yards. Shooting at 25 yards was not recommended as the pellets would spread missing the intended target.
It seems to be the case in a lot of videos I see. The tighter the choke the better the accuaracy with most all loads. Not sure where the whole idea from more open chokes for buck the better came from.
Nice show,I have an 870 Remington tactical in 12 ga and it's lethal with the same shells that you use in the show, out to 25 yds it's very consistent in it's patterns,#4 buck at that distance will completely pepper a target like yours
For my Mossberg 500 with 28 inch barrel I use a modified choke when hunting with buckshot. It has never failed to drop a deer in it's tracks. I'm buying semi auto 12 gauge next week I'll have to do some tests to see what choke to use.
I thought you couldn't shoot a buck in full choke lol my frist shot gun that takes chokes I have some 12 pellet buck I have been afraid to shoot because I didn't know if it would go bad lol

Wind noise wasn't bad at all. Nor the writing. Good vidio. I had winning bid on a Mossberg 835, got a skeet tube and for social work an extended full choke to run, since rifled slugs can't be used in an 835. The turkey choke wasn't recommended for buck either. Going to test the full and skeet with 00 plain and buffered low recoil.
The very tight patterned Turkey choke is used for shooting "only the head & neck" off of wild Turkeys. As far as I know the Turkey choke is the tightest choke on the market, it is one step tighter than Extra Full choke. But I do 'not' know if it will work with 00 or 000 Buckshot.??

Every gun will shoot different with different chokes and ammunition. Always pattern your gun with ammunition you use and try different chokes until you get the pattern you want. Buckshot with buffer would improve pattern better then with no buffer. It reduces deformation of the shot.

Walmart cheap federal 15 round pack Stoeger m3000 Kicks Buck Kicker choke consentient 12 to 14 inch group at 80 yards. That's a dead deer hog or what ever out to a 100 yards. You get even tighter groups with buffered buck shot.
Its a good video, but I personally (being very inexperienced, so dont mind my mussings) first of all have some concerns about the repeatability, I would think 1 shot is not really enough for the consistent result, maybe 5 for each choke? Second - I`ve seen a similar video and Mod and IC were getting the best results, so my assumption would be - the results are very specific to combo of shotgun+ammo, and third point - a lot of weapon experts say dont use anything tighter than IC for the double ought (not my words obviously, bit really a lot of people say that) Just my 2 cents, but generally I appreciate the video, always interesting to see something new
It doesn't effect the quality of the video but your very first shot there actually was 9 shots on paper. In the middle of the outline, you just forgot to put the line through it. Great video thanks.
Huntingwise, what do you use buckshot for in AK? In VA we use it for deer, coyote, bobcat and with #4 buck and smaller sometimes turkey. Alot of double barrels shooters used to keep a #4 buck in one barrel and something larger in the other barrel. I guess that you could use it on smaller black bear but we generally use slugs, rifles and muzzleloaders where I am for bear.
Interesting, I keep hearing that full choke is bad for buckshot patterning but here even with pretty large diameter pellets getting a tight pattern. I have a 12 Gauge Browning Auto 5 made in the late 1940s that has a fixed full choke (I swear, why does every interesting vintage shotgun I find a good deal on have a fixed full choke lol) and I'm not sure if I should ever fire buckshot through it.
I was surprised by the results too. The fixed full seemed to be popular back then in the time before steel waterfowl loads. You may want to ask a gunsmith first since its an old gun but I would try buckshot in it. I learned filming this video that there is no way to tell how something will pattern without trying.
With #5-1/2 shot at 25 yards I can cover your whole house from end to end . Shot an old house they were tearing down before I knew better. I should have helped save some of that old recycling wood.

I am having trouble understanding the contest where you try to be closest to the center with #8 birdshot. Wouldn't the pattern cover the target?

I am guessing the no slug warning was because of the extra full choke.

I was gifted a mossberg maverick with modified choke barrel.. anyone with any buckshot experience through that?
Only way to find out is you pattern your own gun, every barrel is different. Should be a great all around shotgun.

Cool, I bet with the turkey choke it would start to compress the pellets some. It will be interesting to see if you get different results.

I have a stage coach 12that has ic & modified. With 18”” barrels and 9 pellets. The 8 pellets will pattern tighter.
8 pellet patterns much tighter through the 2 shotguns I've tried a similar test on.

That may be to tight, no turkeys here though so I don't really want to buy one.

Exactly! The wad technology has come a long way too, I want to try out the flight control wads at some point.
Modified seems to work best in my moss 500.

You would probably have the best luck with improved cylinder or cylinder with flight control buckshot and rifled slugs.

It doesn't effect the quality of the video but your very first shot there actually was 9 shots on paper. In the middle of the outline, you just forgot to put the line through it. Great video thanks.

Huntingwise, what do you use buckshot for in AK? In VA we use it for deer, coyote, bobcat and with #4 buck and smaller sometimes turkey. Alot of double barrels shooters used to keep a #4 buck in one barrel and something larger in the other barrel. I guess that you could use it on smaller black bear but we generally use slugs, rifles and muzzleloaders where I am for bear.
In my neighborhood probably lynx, fox or cantankerous two legged predators.
Interesting, I keep hearing that full choke is bad for buckshot patterning but here even with pretty large diameter pellets getting a tight pattern. I have a 12 Gauge Browning Auto 5 made in the late 1940s that has a fixed full choke (I swear, why does every interesting vintage shotgun I find a good deal on have a fixed full choke lol) and I'm not sure if I should ever fire buckshot through it.
I was surprised by the results too. The fixed full seemed to be popular back then in the time before steel waterfowl loads. You may want to ask a gunsmith first since its an old gun but I would try buckshot in it. I learned filming this video that there is no way to tell how something will pattern without trying.

With #5-1/2 shot at 25 yards I can cover your whole house from end to end . Shot an old house they were tearing down before I knew better. I should have helped save some of that old recycling wood.

What kind of ammo? I'm asking because sometimes if you're using FCW you want the imp cyl because the tighter ones will rip the shot cup off your shot (defeating the purpose).
