Around 100,000 years ago an estimated 300 families of Homo sapiens escaped the harsh meteorological changes that had rendered much of Africa uninhabitable and moved to this coastal microclimate, thriving off the bounty of the sea and land.
(Much) more recently Lekkerwater was former South African president FW de Klerk’s Camp David, the place where in the run-up to the release and investiture of Nelson Mandela as the country’s president, de Klerk effectively dismantled apartheid through a series of discreet meetings in the early 1990s."
