  • Public health issues during major events: outlook for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics
The whole country is gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including France’s public health organisations. At this time, numerous discussions are emerging around how surveillance and prevention can protect population health given the exceptional circumstances that characterise this kind of international event.
For several decades now, the topic of large gatherings has been regular subject of studies. In its report entitled ‘Public health for mass gatherings: key considerations’ (2015), the World Health Organization (WHO) looks at the issues raised by managing events of this magnitude. The emergence of this research gradually gave rise to the discipline of “mass gathering medicine”. With its multiple aspects, it has today become an integral part of public health. Feedback and sharing experiences are of major importance in this field.
Following this logic, this session is an opportunity to discuss what we know about the topic of mass gatherings. International public health experts will have the floor to explain how they prepared for and delivered the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London and Tokyo. The various French stakeholders involved in preparing for the Games will also have their say. This session will include a number of presentations followed by a round table. The objective will be to understand the need for a very specific kind of approach, both before and during the event, and to collectively share the public health issues on the cusp of the Paris 2024 Games.
