    A lot of people don't realize how important pilots and tugs are, but imagine if a large cargo ship runs into a sandbank or a underwater obstacle or hits the lock gates of a dock.
    It would have to pay for being towed and then checked for damage, if it damages its fuel bunkers it can cost millions to clean up the pollution and various legal, environmental, safety and repair and insurance issues might end up costing more than the ship itself is worth if it is fairly old.
    Not forgetting the negative publicity for the shipping company that owns the vessel.
    In the long run it is much better to pay for pilots and tugs, it's probably not optional to be honest because the consequences of being a cheap skate can be much more than paying for assistance in entering and departing from a dock.

    stress free way to get to London. flying isn't much faster when you count everything in,

    They're not wrong. The port is Dublin. Dublin wouldn't exist if it weren't for traffic and trade from the sea.

    dubli port is not 24 7 or 365 day a year if a ship gets to dublin after midnight it has to anchour wheres as if you go to waterford port them lads work 24 7 and will a comadate a lot better

      dublin port is 24/7 the only time a ship has to anchor is when a berth is not available many ships do berth well past midnight I don't know where you got that information
