polyrhythms, soft and hard analog sounds, masterful mastering, the "foghorn" style of saw synth he does in his dark songs a lot, minor key, quiet groovy hats under a steady kick, slight reverb on the snares, minimal but very interesting melodies, intentional use of the full spectrum. I keep learning more technical detailed to be impressed by in his work

The sub-bass is thick and full, the kick is powerful and punchy, but not clicky and distorted. And the saw lead is catchy and really drives the mood.

Nah, it's a different sport to score a movie - I mean this is all from a movie soundtrack, how much of it sounds like Deadmau5 tracks? - all of it? - yes, that's the problem. Nobody will make a Deadmau5 movie except maybe Deadmau5 himself. Saying he's at the level of Vangelis is a helluva stretch dude, too far a stretch... really I don't even think he'd do a good job of a title track - and I like his music, but its far too distinct. I mean, at a push you could say that Daft Punk did a reasonable job on Tron, Deadmau5 isn't even at that level... its like he hasn't suffered enough to compose important music yet. This sounds horrible I know, but look at to context here - this is his attempt at a soundtrack... and we'll have forgotten about it next month.

That fucking mastering. That’s what sets Joel apart from other musicians. Yeah it’s easy to play around with some kicks and synths, but this bastard takes the time to make sure everything is perfect. Love it.

@@bg7632 the mixing is more to do with how the sounds actually blend together (cutting or adding certain frequencies to certain sounds so they have more clarity).

I love the songs you do that have just a simple catchy melody you introduce well before the beat and without that beat people have no choice but to forget about bass or the beat for a minute and hear the overall catchy, chill, but vibrant melody. Examples of this are... Nosedive, Raise Your Weapon, I Remember, Polaris, Imaginary Friends, Not Exactly, and SATRN. They all focus on a simple vibrant melody with maybe 5 single notes with 3-4 chords at a certain point of the song. Sometimes like Polaris it is only just starting so the beat hasn't been built into it yet... or it can be more like Raise Your Weapon where everything gets quiet but this beautiful melody played on piano... You can't help but focus on it for a minute or two as nothing else is played with it yet, and it makes it stand out for the rest of the song all because we had to listen to just that for a short duration... BRILLIANT.
