As a Seahawks fan, I come back to this every so often, hoping that Russell will run it into the end zone on THAT play. And it rips my heart out every single time when it gets picked off.
When the crowd cheers during that play that's actually the last gasp of a potential dynasty dying. That's why Seahawk players were fighting at the end, they knew the dynasty was dead and lying a dying animal they lashed out.

As a Patriots fan, the Seahawks had NOTHING to be ashamed of during that game. Even that last play was beautifully set up. It was a miracle that the Pats had practiced for that possibility and that Butler was able to punch through, body-slam a receiver with a foot on him, and intercept that catch.
It’s honestly my favorite Super Bowl of all time. It was just an all around well-played, well-coached game between two amazing teams. It was genuinely good football and I’ll always respect Seattle for it.

Yes. I was screaming jumping for joy when malcom butler intercepted that pass, probably the most hype moment of my life other than the eagles SB win. (I’m an eagles fan just also a huge Tom Brady fan.)

Why didn't Seahawks run the ball? because Pete Carroll promised the Patriots a Lombardi trophy in 1997 and in Super Bowl 49, he delivered.
Harry Vue Lynch was ran from the one 5 times that year. He scored once. 20%. He probably doesn't score. If he doesn't then the clock is running and they have to use their last timeout with >20 seconds left. They mathematically had to pass.

No they mathematically did not have to pass. They shouldn't have run the clock down as much and had Marshawn take the run from the .5 yard line. He was on fire that game, shoulda ran first for sure with the way Marshawn was running that game.

This is by far the best Super Bowl to have ever been played. 28-3 is wild but only the 4th quarter in that one was crazy. This one is the best in terms of clutch plays, balance of offense and defense, and most importantly, narratives.

In fairness, if the pass had gone for a touchdown, everyone would have said how clever Pete Carol was, throwing the ball when New England was keyed in on Lynch.
That's exactly what he was going for too, he really wanted to beat Bill to show "Hey you might have done what I couldn't when I was at NE, but I'm going to show you something!" Bill of course was like "Nah"
As much as ppl wanna blame on Pete to throw, it was one hell of a play made by Malcolm. 1 in a thousand it will be int.
Looking back at the play, it was probably the safest throw you can make from the 1 yard line. Russ throws the ball and Butler is still 4 or 5 steps away so he looks wide open, and you're thinking worse-case-scenario this gets knocked down at the line it gets dropped, whatever, we live to see another day. I feel like that throw was probably less likely to be intercepted then the likelihood Lynch would have fumbled if given the ball. That's how safe it appeared. It was just an incredible defensive play.
@@tateanderson213 Not the safest (think about a throw to the corner of the end zone), but had it been executed correctly, it might have been pretty safe. Wilson should have thrown the ball at his receiver's body, not lead him with the throw, so that the receiver could use his body to shield the ball from the defender (it would be naive not to expect a defender to get there), leading to an incomplete pass at the worst. Wilson led his receiver and it proved costly. Butler did make a good play and could have broken up the pass had it been thrown correctly.
My friend explained it pretty much the same way to me . It would be a great play if it worked if it doesn't not so much.

I was at a Patriots bar watching this and the ENTIRE bar was silent, accepting Seattle was going to score and win it. When the interception happened the bar went crazy and the owner passed around shots to the hundreds there. It was EPIC!
As a Seahawks fan, I just got to say even though we lost, this is probably the greatest super bowl ever. A close neck and neck game between the best offenses and the best defenses only for what I hate to admit, but is probably the greatest super bowl play result ever. Just consider the circumstances. You’re at the one yard line, about to win the super bowl, 4th quarter, 30 seconds left on the game clock, with the best running back in the league, and you pass the ball only for a cornerback to be at the right place at the right time and intercepts the ball just wins the super bowl for the entire team. I feel jealous, but this super bowl was one for the books. Nothing but respect to this era of the Seahawks and Patriots. How about I change it up and make my life feel a bit better. So, about 28-3

It had been a full decade since their last championship and this game was just all around better than Super Bowl 51. 51 was great, but 49 was exciting from both sides, start to finish. Not a tail of two halves.

What always drives me insane about this play, is that everyone talks about Marshawn and a missed opportunity. If this play ended in a touchdown, people would be talking about the "brilliance" of Pete Carroll to throw instead of doing the obvious. What made this play happen was not a Seahawk failure, but Butler's experience in getting beat on this play multiple times. He was drilled on it by Coach Belichik and was ready for it this time around. Mad respect to the Seahawks for an incredible game.

Not really. It's a risky play irrespective of the result. People would praise it if it worked because it was BOLD as hell. Russ should have ran it in.
Bottom line: if Marshawn ran it all four times and New England just flat-out stopped him, I could live with that. You've got to put the ball in his hands. I wouldn't have been talking about Pete Carroll's "brilliance". I'd been asking, what the hell was he thinking, risking it all on a pick play"? Would I have been happy? Sure, but it wouldn't have felt right because that's not who we are.
And for some reason, no one ever looks at the Patriots defensive package on that play. There's about a million pounds of flesh on the LOS, and every WR is essentially man-to-man (there's a single safety but he's too far back to do anything anyway). If you don't trust your offense to throw a TD on a pick play from the 1 with man across the board, you should just never throw a pass ever again. And the more likely "worst case" of that play is an incompletion, not an INT - which still gives you 3rd and a half a yard, with two chances for Lynch to punch it in. It's a sensible or even smart play call to run the pick play and throw it there, but given the outcome everyone thinks it was just stupid.

Seahawks won the year before so it's not that bad. Falcons is the worst. Titans is close because they were a yard away. Bills because it's the bills nothing goes their way.
Falcons losing was easily the worst Super Bowl loss of all time. Many teams get blown out because they simply don't match up talent wise, but Atlanta had the Super Bowl trophy in their hands basically and they gassed out and made stupid calls in the second half. They rested on their Laurels against the freaking Patriots of all teams. I think they could of gotten away with the slacking off against any other team in the league that year, but not against New England.

When this game was on about 6 years ago, I was delivering pizzas, in a terrible snowstorm, needless to say I got stuck in a snow bank and was standard in my car. I didn’t get to enjoy this game, had to deal with a tow truck or finding a way to get to safety. Once the game was over my boss finally came to get me and we pushed my car out of the snow bank, I get back the shop and I was told New England won. Now 6 years later I’m not doing said job and relaxing on a Saturday night, just sitting here. Watching this game. Having a few beers. 😂

Wow, although my home state team lost, then watching the game again after 10 years and being non-bias toward the end call, this was one of the best Super Bowls I've watched. The determination from both teams, the athletic skills from both teams. Awesome!

What’s significantly important which people never talk about is the fact that the last time Tom Brady played in this stadium was super bowl 42, the first giants loss to go 18-1. With that in his mind going into this game knowing what happened the last time he stepped foot onto this field, it’s incredible to see the chip on his shoulder he played with and true grit, you can really notice it come out when the Pats went down by 10. Redemption.
That last drive by the pats offense and Brady was masterful!

Ashlin - Simon was a starter at LSU who was drafted by the Seahawks. Malcolm Butler was an undrafted, 4th string CB for the Patriots who played at Hinds Community College and at West Alabama (D-2) before going to work at Popeye's Chicken. Excuses are for losers. Both Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick will tell you the same.

matt man We would get the ball back if they scored, that timeout would be used on the "game winning drive" that we never had to do thanks to Malcolm Butler. I know though, I was screaming for them to take a time-out, my mind could not understand Belichick's wizardry ,he wasn't even worried lol. He had faith in that Defense that REALLY paid off.

By not taking a timeout, Bill kinda forced the Seahawks to throw. Because if Lynch hadn't scored after running it then, they would be pretty screwed. The Seahawks would have had to use their final timeout and only had time for one play max.

Just goes to show that team was not mentally tough. The “me” attitude that those kinda players have doesn’t lead to lasting success as a team. Pats lost the super bowl on poor play calling throughout the game in 2017 and came back and won the super bowl last year.

that encroachment by bennet at the very end is one of the most overlooked plays in NFL history. There was a very real chance that Seattle could have gotten a safety and one more possession if he hadn't done that

Pick play isn't fancy. It was one of the top percentage scoring plays that season. You have to play near perfect and jump the route to even have a chance to defend. Browner jammed kease properly, Butler beat him to the spot where the ball was going by selling out to it.
Lynch was 1/5 on scoring from the one yard line that season.
Pick play to score in the redzone was nearly 100% by all teams that season.
The problem is it was 2nd down
And running has less risk of losing ball than passing
They can run this down and even if they failed, try pass at 3rd or 4th down
So why took unnecessary risk?
That's why this is a bad call
At least you can say, The Seahawks went down FIGHTING!!!

As a 30 something year-old who's watched nfl football for nearly my whole life and had no routing interest in this game, I honestly think this was the best super bowl game I've ever watched. It was 2 great teams going back and forth for the whole game, both offenses made big plays and both defenses made big plays, and it ended on maybe the most memorable play in super bowl history. Great game!

As a Seahawks fan rewatching this I can honestly say that even though the game didn't end how I wanted it to, this is easily one of the best Super Bowls I've ever witnessed

Viewtiful Woe here I'll explain for you. That season Lynch had run from the 1 five times. You know how many times he got the TD? 1. That's a 20% chance that they get the TD. The Patriots were in goal line, so they were protecting against the run. Marshawn wouldn't have gotten it. And, the Patriots had all of their cornerbacks practice against that play a few times, Butler didn't make the play in practice, but he learned and did it when it counted.

it's Dec 2021 and the Seahawks are at 5-10 and just missed the playoffs with 2 games left in the season. I'm not sure why I'm here but the nostalgia of this team is so comforting despite the way it ends. to this day we're still losing games in a similar fashion. no one knows if this is the last year we get to witness the pete carroll + russell wilson duo, but regardless, go hawks.

Brady goes 8/8 on the final drive of the superbowl to take the lead with 2 minutes left vs the best defense of this generation. Perfection. That is why he is the greatest of all time.
While that defense on that day was not 100%, they still played pretty well against the Patriots. And yes, for Brady to go 8/8 on that drive to clutch out the go-ahead touchdwon just further shows how great of a QB he really is.

I know it wasn't the most professional, but that defense played their heart out that game and had to watch it get thrown away (literally) at the very end from the sideline. They were all frustrated
Such an amazing and exciting Super Bowl. Ironically at age 32, there are only 3 superbowls that are so memorable I can think of them without having to put thought into it. And Tom Brady appeared in two of them. This super bowl, The Giants vs Pats with the famous helmet catch, and the titans vs the rams (34) where the titans fell like 1-3 yards short of the win.

It was almost unanimously agreed that the actual infraction was minuscule and borderline irrelevant, it was about giving a stronger penalty after they got off on spygate and an attempt by Rodger Godell to prove he is big boy. He technically broke a rule so he was punished accordingly but not a single soul can make a solid argument as to how a minute difference in ball pressure taints the greatest dynasty in NFL history and ruined a franchises title and spirit. Ball pressure is also personal preference, same as many other equipment choices. So the lower pressure isn’t even a objective advantage, only the same as a wide receiver using gloves as opposed to going barehanded.

Rewatching this game I didn’t even notice Seattle had 3 attempts to score before NE took the lead. They kept NE in the game like crazy, big ups to the NE defense
