    It's time for us to delve into the lore of Final Fantasy X, and we're starting off with Tidus' origins, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy 10. He's been a character that you guys have been requesting for a while, so we thought it was time to give the people what they want!
    Tidus acts the focal point for much of Final Fantasy X, and although he does have a more limited role within Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy X-2.5 and Final Fantasy X Will, he still features and it therefore means that his story is rather extensive - perhaps moreso than any other character in the franchise.
    It means we'll be talking about Dream Zanarkand and Tidus' conception, through to his relationship with Jecht, Auron and of course, Yuna. As he follows the path of the pilgrimage through Spira, there's also time for Blitzball and face offs against the incorrigible Seymour!
    We hope you enjoy! Be sure to let us know which character you'd like us to focus on next!

      Had to listen to the origins of Spira a couple of times in the beginning to understand. When I played this game myself a couple of years back I never understood the story behind Spira. I just went with the idea of Tidus is a ghost sent to the future to help Yuna and company beat this big monster lol. Thank you for the vid. Now I quite understood the origin of Spira and Jects' s plan when he left dream zanarkand.

    Tidus really is a great MC and I think he is misunderstood quite a bit by the internet fans. The laugh scene is probably the most misunderstood scene in all of Final Fantasy. Such a great character.

      its not misunderstood though. i tried playing it and all the dialog fell flat the voice, tone didn't match the movements.
      there are ways to fake laugh to not sound robotic.
      his character boils down to this: self centered spots player who lives in his fathers shadow, who blames his dad for anything and everything. Acts selfish in 90% of most cases, and breaks down when shit hits the fan.
      i never found him emotionally mature enough to handle yuna's situation, nor did he respect any of her choices. He wanted her to do what he wanted, he never stop to think of the ramifications.
      Look at what happens in 10-2 just because they ended the yu-yevon stuff, more crap happens. Which in some cases is much much worst.

      @light333 Před 5 lety +80

      It is misunderstood by the broader FF base. You just didnt like it. I dont agree with your opinion on it being badly acted, but it is your opinion. However, what I am referring to is the FF fanbase as a whole, which does not seem to understand the scene itself, that it IS a fake laugh.

    • @Subxenox15
      @Subxenox15 Před 5 lety +91

      7ArchAngels Exactly. It's not bad voice acting...They are fake laughing on purpose, it's even said several times leading up to it...Force yourself to laugh when you feel sad, which is a "fake laugh"..

    Tidus reflected on how I felt about being a teenager. The world seemed so complicated, I thought I knew what I needed to know but the more I went on, the more I realized I had no idea. Then just trying to find a place to belong and a purpose…that resonated deeply.

    I think Tidus and the story of FFX in general is phenomenal. I always rolled my eyes at people who said he's "too annoying" because it was obvious they didn't get very far in the game. FFX's strength, as FFU says, is the very realistic development of the characters over the journey.
    I will say, while I love Tidus and find no fault with him, Yuna is even better and a more complex character. The "sad" ending in FFX-2 is my fav one and really shows her growth and maturity from stoic, quiet girl to a woman who can finally live her own life.

  • @Ryanookami
    @Ryanookami Před 5 lety +829

    I loved this. Too often Tidus gets dismissed as childish or whiny by FF fans, and I’ve never understood it. Tidus starts off as a pampered star, albeit with a great load of anger and resentment swirling in the background, before he’s cast out into an unfamiliar world. Over his journey he is forced to grow and mature so much, to learn to put others first and how to make real connections with others. To me he is the most noble of all the FF protagonists. Prior to Tidus the majority of main characters had been soldiers, or mercenaries, or thieves; basically people for whom fighting and hardship was just a natural part of their lifestyle. None of them had to grow as much as individuals as Tidus did, while great characters who made the right decisions and saved the world, they each knew that as fighters, any day could be their last. They knew about war and struggle. Tidus didn’t. He came from an ideal dream and was thrown into something so far beyond the life he’d known, and no sooner is he aware of just how high the stakes are for those he has come to care about, he is told of his own nature and that he exists where he is now only to end the dream and himself. Tidus comes through this as a remarkable and strong individual who makes that sacrifice, who willingly brings an end to everything he’d ever known for the sake of others.
    Why does he get such a bad rap??

      @yummychips_ Před 5 lety +14

      all of the MC's are great. I honestly think it comes down to the supporting characters. Cloud and Squall are the silent types with squall, you hear their thoughts which tell of their differences. Cloud being emo and confused, Squall all dark and brooding. Its the supporting characters that are really colorful, Cloud got a harem, a buff dad, a lion thing, and a robot. Squall got his "High School Buddies" who all have unique quirks. For Tidus, his allies look unique but are pretty generic. Eldery sister, Protective lion face uncle, Sister's athlete BF, Drunk Wise Uncle with Sword, spunky cousin. You could say they all boil down to archetypes. But Cloud and Squalls friends all got deeper characteristics, aspirations, hopes and dreams. They feel like real characters, you even explore some of them. Tidus friends all care about one thing, protect/escourt yuna. Everything else to them is just flavor text. Blue Lion Dude we go to the village and there is a side quest, but it feels like an forced flavor text quest.

    The Laughing scene was actually secretly genius. The context of his laugh was ironic. That even when all hope is lost your depressed sad and alone you have to force a laugh out. To defy what you feel and force a laugh and fight for the feelings.
    Yes it was an awkward and cringy part of their dialogue, yet we smiled, giggled and some laughed with a wtf moment. The laughed achieved just that, a laugh. And we are still cringing and laughing at it today.

  • @nelsonta00
    @nelsonta00 Před 5 lety +406

    I wasn't too big of a fan of Tidus in the beginning because of his childishness, but when we learn that he wasn't real and that he too will perish if he kills his own father for the people he care about, it really makes me respect him because of the sacrifices he has to make in order to save a world he does not belong to. It wasn't even one of those cheesy "sacrifice for his people" kinda plot thrown in there like ME3 or Fallout 3; Tidus actually had a long period of time to mull about his demise, but in that time he also kept his smile up while he hid his problem from everybody else, just like Yuna was doing.
    If Tidus doesn't help, Yuna will inevitably become the next Sin and the cycle of death continues.
    If Tidus escapes with Yuna, Sin will continue to exist and the cycle of death continues.
    If Tidus kills Sin, he kills father as well, and he perishes as well.
    There is literally no way for Tidus to win. He is the epitome of a tragic hero. Tidus is a great character that could've been done a little better with minor tweaks (his voice), better dialogues, and a non-Charlie's Angel sequel, but overall he's a really great character. He was the most immature of the bunch in the beginning and the most mature person in the end.

    • @blahblah6474
      @blahblah6474 Před 5 lety +53

      Killing Yu Yevon is what killed Tidus. Yu Yevon was channeling the massive Fayth at Mt. Gagazet made out of the survivors of Zanarkand projecting their memory and summoning “Dream Zanarkand”(basically a massive Aeon city) and the population (Tidus) in a physical location in Spira somewhere off the coast of Bevelle. That’s how Jecht ended up in Spira while training out at Sea.
      Yuna wouldn’t be turned into Sin, Yuna’s final Aeon would become sin the final Aeon would be made out of one of her guardians, that’s why Seymour wanted her to make him into her final aeon to become sin and destroy Spira.
      Though I do agree with your point. Tidus is a good character and FFX had the best story, lore and world in the series imo.

Though other games have surpassed X in individual qualities, X represents the all-round best iteration yet. X also has the most original and invigorating atmosphere of the franchise due to the way these qualities blend and synergize. I really enjoyed this deep dive into Tidus and the lore of this game. It never stops teaching, I almost wonder if this game was unintentionally deep. In the last year, like many others my wife fell apart in many ways. My father was diagnosed with melanoma in March and is now in end of life care. My financial situation fell apart to the point that I'm hoping my dad hid life insurance. I went from a 6 figure job to working in a Amazon fulfillment center. I recently started playing FF10 again on my days off and it's really helped me to understand that having to start fresh isn't always terrifying. Combine the fact that me and my father could never really connect due to multiple issues between him and my abusive mom, it's almost felt like I've been tidus chasing jecht my whole life and now that his so sick I realize everything I stopped myself from gaining from him due to how I shut down.

      True, but what makes Yuna's loss so tragic is that she had a lifetime to prepare for her own end. She was ready for it. She understood it. But she was never prepared for his. She wasn't prepared to fall in love at all, but losing it almost broke her. You can tell at the end that she's having a hard time accepting it. That's why she whistles for him on the docks after.

    If Square-Enix is going to proceed with a Final Fantasy X-3, they really do need to make Tidus the main character once again. This time it’ll be about both Tidus and Yuna; this time it’s not just his story nor hers, it’s their story together as one!

    *"He's just a damn good main protagonist"*
    He really is. Because he sees spira brand new right along with the player, it makes his character truly unique. Also his goal for coming to rectify the relationship with his father is pretty touching. Father son redemption stories always get me. Tidus grows with incredible character development as he starts as the naive hapless innocent bystander, to becoming a noble selfless sacrificial hero by the end.
    The reason Tidus is such a strong force is that while the rest of the world accepts Spira as it is: its rules, it's false teachings, its erroneous ways, Tidus is the only "force" willing to question and go against the tide... He is the CATALYST that sparks the true healing that Spira needed. And it's because he was from the outside; he was the new fresh pair of eyes. Not to mention I don't care what other's say, James Arnold Taylor brought a great performance to the character. His emotional delivery really shows when it really counts. I -do- admit there are some silly deliveries of lines here and there, but overall, yeah very very well done, especially for a first time voice acted FF game. I'll defend the the voice acting and the characters and the rest of this game til the end.

When people say he sucks i honestly dont get it. he feels very real to me. Hes a great character. Maybe people see so much of themselves in him that subconsciously they resent what he is? Simply because they see too much of themselves within him? Thats honestly the best excuse i can think of because honestly, hes well written and compelling. He had a good VA and a good unique design. Every interaction, every inner monologue gave more insight into how he ticks as a person and the writing always kept his character consistent (as well as the rest of the cast, who were really well fleshed out)
      His character is tangible--someone who is accessible to the player. And his growth and maturity over the course of the game have always endeared him to me.

    Tidus reminded me a lot of Squall in the way they were poorly received by the general audience at first. While they have hugely different personalities, audiences had a lot of contention with them due to not fully grasping their story arcs. Squall and Tidus both start off as horribly self centered and goal oriented, even deemed as "whiny" by some, with the former dedicating himself to becoming an elite child mercenary and the latter to becoming a pro sports star. They are not, initially speaking, meant to be the most sympathetic, altruistic or heroic characters. Their arcs force them to grow up and become complex, emotionally resonant characters that are able to make amends with their pasts. Squall becomes a capable leader and stalwart friend. Tidus gets over himself and becomes an altruist - to the point of ultimately sacrificing himself for Spira. I always greatly appreciated Tidus' growth.

    FFX was a very special game to me, being the first I played when I actually got into the Final Fantasy series (XV was my first FF game overall) and I fell in love with the characters, the world, and the story. While XV is my favorite Final Fantasy game, Spira and Gaia (FFIX) may be my two favorite worlds. And one thing I love about Tidus is how much he influenced Yuna. In X, she was a very polite, if somewhat soft-spoken girl and in X-2, she was much more outgoing and more willing to speak her mind. Heck, Tidus influenced everyone around him, causing them to question Yevon and say "I won't accept this. This is wrong. Isn't there another way?" and it's thanks to him and that way of thinking that finally gave Spira the happiness and peace they so desperately searched and hoped for.
    On a slightly unrelated note, I came to realize how much I disliked Tidus' mom. Sure, Jecht was verbally abusive, often insulting his son, but we learn that it was an attempt to make him stronger and more independant, so he could become a better Blitzball player than Jecht himself. But his mom, she was completely neglectful, opting to spend more time with her husband rather than her son. And often times, it was Jecht that had to remind her to spend more time with Tidus.

    • @pkshd
      @pkshd Před 5 lety +19

      I see Tidus' mother's neglect of her son as evidence that pre-Spira Jecht had poor interpersonal skills, thus meaning he wasn't the best judge of character, despite being a very public figure with a fan following that was a borderline cult. I have a theory that he basically married a superfan who was in love with the idea of having Jecht as her husband, but he didn't see that this was the case, nor the problems it could potentially cause down the road, and was just happy that his ego was being stroked by his wife. It wasn't until later it became clear that she would or could not handle all the responsibilities of being one of the two adults in a family, something which came around and hugely affected Tidus' childhood.

That scene where they were in the lagoon & kissed was so romantic & it made me cry. Squall & Rinoa were great but Tidus & Yuna really moved me. I'll never forget it. FF leaves so much mystery about it's stories, though. Was Zanarkand ever real? Something you said made me think so. Didn't it exist thousands of years before or was it all only created by the Faith & why? Cloud Strife. Was he a clone? I didn't think you explained it fully & other things like that.

  • @Aurongroove
    @Aurongroove Před 5 lety +21

    I always think the "thank you" from Yuna, and her behavior throughout the game shows she may have subliminally suspected what Tidus was (essentially some kind of fayt dream, like Aeons, but different).
    It's subjective, but I always through Tidus at the end (The look on his face) was him understanding all too plainly what made Yuna such an extremely gifted summoner, and well a quietly powerful, and extremely kind person.
    If you think of her relationship with the Aeons, how deeply she cared and understood them, Tidus, being a product of Fayt, would have resonated with her on a subconscious level, especially with stuff like "Not a guardian then, I just want him near me" as early as Kilika.
    It may have been the reason she initially fell in love with him, or, why she immediately believed in he was from Jecht's Zanarkand, and why she believed he could get back there, (never giving credence to the time travel theory).

And I have to confess that I absolutely love Tidus❤ he is my favorite character and he will always be my favorite FF character 💜

    Final Fantasy X is probably the most emotionally connected game I have ever played. I had tears just listening to this video.... I've played many other FF games, which many were excellent games, but none came close to grasping my emotions like X does. When the game released in 2002, I was 16 at the time and had a very dysfunctional relationship with my father, kinda like Tidus and Jecht. I was also in my first serious relationship with my gf at the time and so could relate to the first love of Tidus and Yuna. I understood their emotional feelings and felt like I would have reacted and behaved exactly like Tidus did if I was in his place.
    I played and completed both X and X-2 when they first released, but haven't played them since. I just bought the HD remastered version on Steam and began playing yesterday. I am really excited because I haven't seen all the additional content that comes with it. I also really really hope they make a X-3 as this series is right up there with FFVII... although, I'd say, I'd take X over VII.
    Thank you once again for this wonderful game that made a huge impact in my teenage years. I love the memories this game brings back as if I'm playing it again for the first time.

    This explaination also kind of helps the thinking of the plot a bit more. It always kind of didnt make sense, knowing Jeckt became Sin, why he would go back to Zanarkand, and attack it just to see Tidus again. It makes far more sense, that the Fayth wanted out of the "deal", and maybe built Jeckt with that need for the Sea, and sort of caused him to leave, knowing that eventually, if he were able to interact with Sin, he may be absorbed by Sin and could change its "programming". Knowing the Fayth are throughout our path, its quite possible that they directed Jeckt to that fate, knowing that with him as Sin, they could then direct Sin to bring out Tidus, to hopefully end Sin.
    It makes far more sense when you realize its basically a long con on top of detailed planning.

    I loved the intro of the game. Of amazement and wonder of Zanarkand where you want to learn more of that universe. Then the destruction of Zanarkand. From bright lights to ruins. To being alone. To being confused. Then seeing humans like the Al-Bheds. Then landing on the bright beach with actual people. It also helped that Tidus was curious and adventurous. Wanting to learn more. That was a reflection of the player as well. I connected with him through that experience.
    What a great way to connect with a character. And the realization near the end. Omg... love this game.

    As a member of the Tidus Defense Squad (a number of Tidus fans who defend his story and laugh), this is a well-thought out origin story. You've incorporated the FFX-2.5 and Will into the canon in a positive way. We see him change from a self-centered star into a quietly determined and mature young adult whose stories continue in Dissidia and Mobius.

    Tidus was quite literally, too pure for this world. The man found out not only was he a dream, and not actually real, but that in order to save the woman he loved and her world, he had to give up his dream. He wouldn't even go to the farplane afterwards, since he was never alive to begin with. The fayth of Bahamut dumped all of that on his shoulders and all the guy had to say afterwards was, "I'm grateful". Spira didn't deserve such a soul.

  • @muaythaibachatero393
    @muaythaibachatero393 Před 4 lety +3

    To me, FFX is a coming of age story. Tidus, as many have said before, is a pampered arrogant athlete who knew nothing of hardship as he grew up in a perfect world with no pain or suffering. As soon as he arrives in spira he is alone and had to learn to fend for himself(Just imagine how he felt when he first arrived in baaj). As the story progresses, he becomes more selfless and less whiney and ultimately makes a big sacrifice to end Sin and Yu Yevon and to let the fayth finally rest, even if it meant that he and the rest of Dream Zanarkand's inhabitants would fade away.

    I only just finished ffx for the first time since it came out, and wow I was choked up. Tidus is massively underrated, especially in Japanese. So much emotional nuance comes through the performance, I couldn't help but tear up at the final sequences.
    I can't say I'm a fan of the extended lore though, the first game feels so complete. Its cool hearing what happens after they defeat sin, but Tidus coming back to life just really aggressively undermines the original story and reads as a bad fanfic. Though ultimately that's fine because I don't have to think of the extended lore as canon. And really that's just a bone I always have to pick with Square anyway.
    All in all an awesome video as always!

    When it was initially thought that Tidus time-traveled 1000 years into the future in FFX, it was rather cliché. Later though, it's revealed that that's what the game wanted you to believe, and what actually occurred was much more original and involved than "Sin can time-travel because plot reasons."
    However, in the 2.5 story, there is suddenly time-travel because...plot reasons....?
    And for all the ways to have killed him off?? I am really not happy with the direction of these new stories, but I feel like they owe it to us to explain just what the heck they were thinking.

    • @crookeddesk

      Yeah I feel like X-2 and X-2.5 were just made to appease fans that wanted a happy ending, the 2.5 story felt like it was a forced attempt at bringing Tidus back, and prioritized that end result over any consistency among characters or plot
      And X-2 felt like it cheapened the emotional ending to X, from a touching game about personal sacrifice, family, and growth straight into a wild goose chase with pop-stars and dress up!...
