    In 1989, my husband was very much into windsurfing. In January of that year, we made a trip down to Baja. We camped at Punta Chivato for windsurfing. I've always loved shells and walking the beach. The area we stayed in was so full of shells I felt like we were in shell heaven. Found so many scallop flats, other shells I wasn't familiar with. Came home with a cooler full of shells.

    What a score with that lightning whelk! We rarely get them larger than a few inches long it seems. The first operculum is from a horse conch. You can tell because it is dextral, meaning if you compare it to a giant horse conch of the same size it will match the shape of the opening. If it were a lightning whelk, it would be sinistral and wouldn't fit a horse conch (the second one you found is a lightning whelk). Fun finds!

    Wow! Another great video! And all those pretty shells…😍😍 The Crown Conchs and Angel wings (especially those really big ones!) are my favorite finds of this haul! Hoping I can find myself some of those one day….I’ve found some King Crowns, but they were occupied so I had to do a mini photo shoot and leave them…perhaps I’ll be rewarded one day by the Ocean! Thanks for another great beach walk and shell collecting!

    • @donnajohnson3334
      @donnajohnson3334 Před rokem +2

      Do you mean with areas without coloring, when elsewhere it has normal coloring ?. Isn't this the same as leucistic ?. I have seen shells 60 years, and I have seen her get some with very different areas. One, the Figting conch seems to have great variety. The pear whelk is another. I had a sharkeye that was 90% white... and it wasn't from sun fade.

    • @fullerfamily5190
      @fullerfamily5190 Před rokem +1

      After reading some more about it, it does appear that they are the same thing. I had thought about that question for a while. I know some shells just have a natural variation, but that Florida Fighting Conch is the one that finally made me ask. 😊

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před rokem +2

      I went down a little leucism/piebald rabbit hole and it was quite interesting. It occurred to me that research on marine mollusks is somewhat lacking so finding out might actually be quite difficult to confirm!

    • @donnajohnson3334
      @donnajohnson3334 Před rokem +1

      @@fullerfamily5190 I have heard more about leucistic birds and deer. Sharmon is definitely onto something important here... considering that the study of the shells of ocean mollusks is, perhaps less published
      as well. There is alot we have still to learn.
      I had wondered too !. Esp. when I've seen whelks that look like a cross between a Pear and a Lightening Whelk !.
      I'm not saying they did cross, just that there can be much variety. 💙🐚💙

    Hi Sharmon, my dear beach friend,
    The shells are stunning! Especially that semi albino FFC. What a beauty!😍
    I'm also in love with that huge Lightning Whelk. Wow!
    Sorry I didn't comment on the last two weeks. Things aren't going so well here health wise. In fact, it goes very badly.
    There's a lot going on, unfortunately. Can't write it all down here.
    But I would appreciate it a lot if you keep me in your prayers.
    I hope you have a wonderful week! Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤️, Ilona

      Ilona ~ starting a CZcams channel is actually a little scary. You "put yourself out there" and just hope that people are kind and supportive and won't say mean things. I guess it's natural to worry, but as time goes on, the worry goes away, but the memory of those who wrote such lovely things remains. And you, my Netherlands Beach Friend, will always stand out as someone who not only had such a lovely way with words, but you were so very kind and I look forward to reading your posts when you are able to leave them. Please know that your words have meant so very much to me and I am sending you love, strength and peace from Florida (but mostly love) ❤️ ❤️ ❤️🐚🌴🌊
