I'm just as happy to see videos of failed attempts as I am the successes. Both are learning experiences. And it wasn't a complete fail, because you found flavors you liked. Thank you for the information and for participating in Fermented February.
My favorite second ferment is 1/4 t sugar, 1/4 t pumpkin pie spice and 1/4 t fresh grated ginger per bottle.
I'll have to try this when this new batch of kombucha is ready for bottling!
I love how you included "failure" which means we are going to learn and grow and go back to a drawing board so to speak...thank you for sharing the good the bad and the ugly and.encouraging others to keep trying
Bless your heart for showing us the real issues in trying new things. I made Kombucha for years before taking a break for a while. I always loved blueberry 2nd ferment. I just popped the whole berries in and let them ferment for about a week, then took them out and squeezed the juice out into the kombucha. I am wanting to try to make Kombucha again with more flavors. Thanks for inspiring me!
You are awesome for not chucking this video and doing something else. Showing that something doesn't come out like you planned shows us the reality of what can happen to us. Thank you!!
The fact that you put Failure in your description told me....I had to watch this. I'm a newbie. Know absolutely nothing about fermenting. I usually learn more from my mistakes than successes. Loved it! I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. Thanks again.
Thank you for sharing the 'learning curve' to second ferment kombucha and being part of Fermented February 2024.
My favorite part about these collaborations is being introduced to new channels to sub. Love seeing your farm as much as learning the buch techniques.
On my second fermentations, I do it in a gallon jar. After about 7 days, I strain it and place it in bottles in the refrigerator. It helps with the texture tremendously. Also letting it go more days makes it more bubbly.
Thank you so much for sharing your failure! We learn from our failures. It’s also nice to see we are all human. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! It’s important to see the failures, too. We learn just as much from failures as we do the successes. ❤ All 6 of these sound delicious!
I’m a texture person too so I totally get it! I prefer to make kombucha with juice to avoid it. I failed the first several attempts so I’m so glad you shared your experience with us! I do have a few tips that could help.
3 days for a second fermentation isn’t really long enough to develop much fizz, I’d encourage you to go a week or possibly more.
I don’t recall you mentioning how long your first fermentation was but that can affect the fizz, less than 2 weeks and it won’t have really developed what it needs to bubble and more than a month will diminish the sugar available to fizz. I usually use 1/2 a cup of juice which is more concentrated in sugar than the purée so I would try adding more. Alternatively pinch of sugar could help. More sugar makes more fizz.
I'm a newbie so I'm sure I am going to have some failures or mishaps and yes it's all part of learning. I'm excited to be learning as much as I can before I start advancing in fermenting. That you for sharing your farm and being in this year's collaboration. And to Anna for sponsoring such a fabulous group of ladies to share and learn from. ❤
Thank you for sharing the good and the bad, that's how we all learn.
I have done kombucha MANY times BUT have never second fermented….you have inspired me to try‼️
Thank you for the fermentation video. Love the tote idea. I dont blame you for covering each bottle to protect your ceiling. My Nanna opened a bottle once and turned her kitchen ceiling tan in one spot. I wouldnt call it a complete fail at least it was tasty. By the way I love your ROOSTERS in the kitchen.🤗🌻
I pour it thru a strainer before drinking. Besides the puree fruit, it also removes a scoby if it started to form.
You chose great flavors for you second fermentation. I do agree raspberries would make a great alone flavor as well as a raspberry lemon flavor. Thank you for telling us where we can get a starter scobbie. It is in my shopping cart to purchase next week. Thank you for showing you are just human like the rest of us. Non-successes teach us the way not to do it. Successes teach us the way to do it. It is a learning experience. My grandmother told us all growing up the if you learn something once a day, it was not a wasted day. I try to live with that thought so that no matter how small the lesson is, it is always a winning day.
I’m so thrilled that you were willing to show a “failure”. Trying new things is scary and it helps to know that I’m not the only that doesn’t always succeed. Thank you
I’m so new at Fermentation I would have no idea why you failed to get the fizz you want. Thank you for showing helping me learn fermentation!
Oh, I have muscovy ducks too! Next year I want to add bees, but this year I'm working on getting my ducks more established.
I wanna try this. Thank you for joining this collaboration.
I'm a new subscriber thanks to Fermented February Collaboration 2024 - nice to meet you! Our granddaughter raises and shows Boar goats so I enjoyed seeing your little goaties! Thanks for showing that everything doesn't always go right even for those who have been at it awhile! Appreciated your video! I've never tasted kombucha.
I was glad to see a fail. It shows not everything is easy peasy and doesn't always turn out right. Thank you for sharing!
Looking forward to learning from you too! So far I’m really enjoying everybody’s videos. Thank you for participating.
Only way you fail is by not trying at all. You did great, brought us a real video, and we all learned something. I'm new and this is a great video for all beginners. You are awesome 🤗
Totally a textural person as well. You flavors sound delicious. Oh so many flavor combinations...yum
I think that you did a fantastic job. It's great to see a work in progress of learning and gaining new skills. I am glad that you did not let this push you back. I can hardly wait to see where you take this.
I am not so sure that I would consider this as a fail? It appeared to have some bubbles on top - maybe a longer time? I wonder if the cap of the fruit was to heaving that it wouldn't allow the ferment to continue? Just my wine and beer experience making me wonder these things. I will be watching to see what suggestions you get on this and what you try. This is such a special video to share. I love the overview of what you all do on your homestead. The reminder that community is of one of the highest values and failures are okay and what to think about doing with it......Just is warm and fuzzy for me. You will be staying in my rotation of viewing. I can't wait to watch your goat videos too. I enjoy real people, sharing real things! Thank you for being part of Fermented February!
Love that the flavors at least came out well, appreciate you sharing that there was a lack of fizz. Also loved the little intro about what your channel and homesteading goals are about to remind people whether new or returning. Been subscribed since last Fermented Feb, I just don't comment often.
I am not a konbucha fermenter, but I loved watching this video. Thank you for the 2024 Fermented February participation.
Thank you! Still learning. It’s all a process of learning
I HAVE NEVER DONE KOMBUCHA AT ALL BUT THIS HELPS THOSE WHO NEVER HAVE OR HAS DONE ONE SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND BEING A PART OF FERMENTED FEBRUARY.
I add a dollop of honey to my second fermentation and fill my bottles right up to where the cap is. I also use fruit chopped up really small. It rarely explodes, but it’s nicely fizzy.
🎉 I have done a second fermentation of kombucha adding a few slices of ginger and 1/4-1/2t of sugar per bottle. It wasn’t very bubbly either. I was going to try upping the sugar and possibly leaving it to ferment longer. Thanks for the flavor ideas!
I haven’t ventured into Kombucha yet. Thanks for the video. We are always learning!!
Thank you for sharing. I’m really happy to see the fails as it allows me to see what I might go through. Learning for us all.
I haven’t fermented anything other than sauerkraut and cranberries and honey so far. But I am learning more because of Anna and all of you guys! Thank you so much!
I absolutely love making my own Kombucha! It took me awhile to get the fizz! Ginger helps IMO
Anna said our first few teies might be fails... i haven't tried yet lol. You go girl! Many Blessings to you!
Loved watching you sample them lol... thank you for posting this!
It was really interesting to see how you made different flavor profiles and what you would do differently.
I’m a newbie so I appreciate you sharing your fail with us. This is one that I would definitely consider making. Thanks
It is great to see a video where not everything goes perfectly! So thank you for this great video and for participating in the collaboration!!!
Thank you for introducing us to your family and farm; it's so much more personal that way. Enjoyed the learning process alongside you.
Bottles like you have make it more fizzy when your second fermentation works. My daughter doesn't do texture so she runs it through a tea filter over ice before she drinks it. I like it straight from the bottle.
We all learn from each other, successes and fails. Thank for showing this.
I LIKE SEEING THE SUCCESS AND NOT SUCCESESS. THANK YOU FOR SHAREING
I'm new to fermenting anything. I'm finding all I've seen so far in this collaboration so helpful. Thanks for participating.
I feel so much better knowing I can try something new and not be the only one who may not have success. Thank you for sharing and participating in this great collaboration. I wouldn't attempt this without you guys. 😊
Great presentation & I always learn. I found that fresh fruit second ferments quickly & always use strong fermenting bottles so they don’t explode. Thanks for sharing! 🤗🇨🇦 I leave my 2nd ferment out a bit longer in the winter & brown sugar works well in mine. I put a dish cloth over my lids when opening them because I do have ginger kombucha on my ceiling😅
I love your little farm! I had a 5 acre mini-farm in central Florida for 17 years. Over the years I did a little of everything: horses, jersey cow, Nubian goats, rabbits, chickens, a Turkey, quail, pigs, & even a pheasant once! We had gardens (both successful & failures). We had peach trees.
I’m now in a stage of life where I no longer have animals. I have moved into a stage where I’m learning fermentation. My favorite kombucha F2 flavor combo is strawberry/guava/ginger/pineapple.
I hit the subscribe button & look forward to more videos from you!
If you learned something, it is never a failure. Great video
This is so good to see. I love making kombucha but now ready for second ferment flavors. Thanks so much!!!
Awesome that you showed the failure which just makes you more relatable! Great job!
Really appreciate your honesty on this one... as for advice here is my two cents... when I have done my second ferments I will use a 100% natural juice instead of a puree as I to do not appreciate pulp. I also usually will give the second ferment about 5 to 7 days instead of 3. Hope that helps. Wishing you a very Blessed day 😊
I use a lot of strawberry , blueberry and lemon ginger are my favorites! Thanks for the video!
The failures are as good to learn from as the successes are. Thanks for sharing!
I am also new to fermenting and have the kind of fear of kombucha that people have when passing an accident. Meaning must gonna have to make some and try it. You may not realize just how much information you have provided, but I appreciate it so much. So thank you for your video and for participating in this collaboration. Thank Anna, as well, for hosting this collaboration!
Didn't know 2F was a thing - the flavors sound great. Failed attempts are great learnings! Thank you.
Great video - not at all a failure since you do like the flavours and they can be made with your own fruit this summer! thank you
Thanks for being so honest. People need to see some times we need to keep learning and trying
Your homestead sounds beautiful.
I love how you indicated what you did right, what you did wrong and what you think will best next time
I’m looking forward to your “redo” video after you read everyone’s comments and advice. Kombucha is the most important thing for me to learn how to do cuz I spend a fortune on store bought every month.
Hey, Ashly! Sometimes learning through error is the best way to get it right and you never know what else you might find along the way! Love your video, thank you for sharing all your challenges with the kombucha, it's far beyond my skills so I'm afraid I have no insight to offer other than just keep trying. ❤❤❤
I absolutely love that you showed that not everything goes perfectly. Your flavors sound amazing and makes me want to try them.
I'm wanting to try kombucha now. Going to try making my own scoby. Thanks for sharing.
I feel like my second fermentation on kombucha and water kefir varies in levels of success… thanks for showing us your efforts!
True, isn't water kefir more flexible and forgiving.
I tried Kombucha once so far and it was a total failure. Thanks for your video.
I have tried and failed at kombucha many times. I get you..Bless you
I’m just learning kombucha also so this is also a learning experience for me. And I just love your homestead. I hope to someday have goats also.
Thanks for your honesty. I'm a newbie, so it's good to see others working through their recipes to make a better ferment. 👍
So many fun flavors! I can’t wait to try making Kombucha😊 thank you for the info!!
Thanks for showing that failures happen but we learn from them.
There are no failures if we learn from them. I would say to make it in bigger bottles that you can burp and then strain it when you drink it. I've never made kombucha and not sure if I would like it or not. It was still a great video. Once I painted my apartment and then opened a suspicious can and it exploded all over my newly painted kitchen so I could feel your fear. Thanks for being a part of this collaboration.
I just started my second ferment this morning. I started my kombucha journey by creating my own scoby. I have a strawberry one and a pineapple one. I only make small batches because I'm the only one who will drink it.
Thank you for showing us.
As others have stated, I finally understand why you'd do a second ferment. Thank you for explaining.
Man I can’t wait to have my forever home and a permanent place for me to do all my preserving!! Thanks for sharing
Haven't made combucha in a long time
Thank you for the video
Thank you so much I love watching the firmenting
If we can learn from our failures, then I don't believe it's a failure, but a success for the learning experience. Thank you for sharing with us. Susan
I have the same problem. I have to master the 2n fermentation. Thank you for sharing.
I love how you shared success and failure in the video. I have never tried kombucha before and not sure if I would like it but, I guess you don’t know until you try. Thanks for sharing this whole process. Thank you for sharing all of this. I’m a texture person too.
It's nice to know that others have fails too. Thanks for sharing .
I have really been wanting to give kombucha a try. Thanks for the REAL video. So glad i found your channel through this colab. ❤
Thank you for showing real life failures! I'm new to fermentation and I'm sure failures are not too far away. Thank you for sharing!
I have been wanting to try kombucha. Thank you for sharing.
😊 I came here from the collab of Fermented Homestead. New subscriber ✅
I haven't tried kombucha yet, but am really excited to try it.
Thank you for showing us this video! This is the best way to learn so you don't forget!
I like it that you were honest w/all that went wrong and you were saying the different flavors tasted good and not everybody gets fermenting right the first time.my very first batch of fermented sauerkraut was a complete failure and my husband told me not to try again.Well its been probably a year and I started researching and watching CZcams videos and I made a new fermented batch and it's on day 11 of fermenting and it smells great and I'm getting ready to see if it's sour to our liking and then it will go into the fridge 😊
Thank you for sharing your fermenting failure. Only by failing do we learn to improve our methods for a better finished product. Thanks again.
Mine never fizzed either but the flavors are awesome. My favorite so far is lemon ginger so now I think I’ll throw some honey in and see how that is. Thanks for the video!
I don't know a thing about fermenting but am fascinated by this collaboration. I do want to try some. Your drinks looked so good to me. I drank kefir milk and water for a time but got away from it. I don't know if it similar to kombucha. I thought this was very interesting and appreciate you sharing your video. If you liked the taste then to me that was not a failure.
I am definitely new. Thank you for giving so much info
Thank you for taking the time to share with us.
Thank you for sharing all the steps and missteps. It’s really helpful for us newbies 😊
I'm so going to start doing kombucha again. Id say just let it ferments a couple of more days to get the fizzy or put them in a warmer place. I think having them on the floor it wasn't warm enough. When opening the bottles set the bottle in a bowl and cover the top with a zip lock bag when opening. If it does explode it will go up in the baggie and right back down onto the bowl. No waste. I also find using frozen fruit works well. Ginger lemon and blueberry Ginger lemon are 2 of my favorites. Also I'm right there with you, I don't like the texture of the mnny scoby. I just use a little metal strainer when pouring over ice into a glass. I have the same bottles you used and it is difficult to get the fruit out. I also reuse store bought kombucha bottles with the bigger opening. I've never had an issue using them. Good job.
