With a nice big chunky tool that your using the amount of stick out doesn’t look too much mate, but it’s a mark of you professionalism and experience that you explain those those things. Looks like you’ve got a chilled casting there, get Stuart to send you another, but again it’s great that you persevered with it, made an excellent video as always.
Hi Ade, another interesting video. The tips on how to get round problems with the casting are very useful, however it seems to me that Stewart models should take a look at their quality control. All the best, stay safe.
Excellent work Ade, always good to see the planning in machining a casting, forging or fabrication, that flywheel looked quite accurate in as in condition. Like the insight in camera mounting. Thanks for sharing. Best regards from the Black Country. John.
Cool, thanks Steven . I am going to move on to a few more bits and then look at the alignment and see if a bronze spacer may be needed to make up the gap as I had to adapt the dimensions a bit with the casting . Cheers Ade.
Nice job on sorting the off set pattern Ade, and dealing with the hard spots. A pleasing outcome! Stuart models sell loads of these kits, I don't see why they don't get their patterns made so that they are dowelled together. Or if they are dowelled, remade when the dowel holes are so bloody worn that the pattern gets off set in the mould. After all they charge enough for the kits! Lol
Looked very nice and true turning on the shaft. Dressing the inner part of the rim added to the finish. I was worried when you clamped it in the small vice if it would leave marks on the rim.
Gday Ades, the flywheel looks great, I’ve seen quite a few models where the spokes look like there offset which just doesn’t look right, yours look perfect, the polished surface is a must in my book, Great job mate, cheers Matty
Beautiful bit of work on that flywheel Ade, glad you can share your decision making processes, sometimes we are guilty of taking short cuts and end up paying in the long run. Shows the value of planning, cheers!
you know it's starting to come together when you get spiny things in there, I like the thought process you went though to do the job though. thanks for sharing. Dave
Great video. I too am making a similar steam engine. Although the parts aren't exactly as yours, they are similar. Lots of helpful hints and wisdom in this video. Thank you, be well.
Well done Ade. Might I just add that you tend when turning cast iron, to run it at too fast a speed, got chatter sounds, try it slower next time. Now a couple of suggestions if I may ? Treat yourself to a 0 to 1/4" drill chuck with a parallel shank that you can put in your standard chuck or collet when drilling small holes. The OD of the chuck being smaller will allow you greater access to parts. Lastly as a good tip, after drilling the reaming size hole on the lathe, bore out the start of the hole to size to ensure that the drill has not wandered off center. The reamer has to then ream true. Luckily it came out fine. Keep the videos coming please. Regards from Australia.
Nice one Ade, you ad him! Nice Welsh saying there. Really good job and do you know what, I think I'll do mine exactly the same way as you! Thanks for sharing the video Ade. Regards Gareth
Hi Ade, the Stuart I have had a few hard spots on the base, not one of my cutters would touch it, was fuming till I thought just get some paper on it, think it was 60 but it did the trick. It just threw me as this was the first casting I had machined, wish I could help you with the washer problem! All the best n TFS, GB :)
you prolly dont care but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost the password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Marcel Noel I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Marcel Noel DAMN IT REALLY WORKED! Literally got access to my instagram password within about 30 minutes of using the site. I had to pay 15 $ but for sure worth the money :) Thank you so much, you saved my account!
always fancied making a model steam engine or even a larger hit-n-miss engine. would love to be able to make my own castings but being a running job shop never seem to have the time...... have to content myself watching others
ha, you had a decent casting to start with. mine was 20 thou offset halves and I was not able to get a nice outer rim and still be in spec diameter. add in the chilled scale was very deep in a few places on OD. the casting was too small, only 15 thou should've come off for spec. I should've started centering the spokes but faced and OD 1st. so it's botched now and I set the S50 aside to do other models
Ayup Ade how are you? My name is Charles, I’ve come across your channel through Chris harbour grate lad. But I’m absolutely amazed by your work 👌🏻 I’ve subscribed to your channel now and started watching from the beginning it’s grate channel. Now I’m going ask a question...... can someone like me do something like this and get into it as an hobby? With basic skills?I’m a complete novice obviously. Do you do a starter channel for beginners? Thanks for your time and advice Ade stay safe 👍🏻
Hi Richard . I had to adapt the casting dimension of the base a little so I am going to do a few more parts and look at the alignment as to if a bronze spacer is needed. Cheers Ade.
I wonder if your fibre washer went missing when you unpacked the kit, on mine it was loose on top of the box of bolts so came away with the vacuum packaging
Yes there is but it is thinner than the drawing suggests . I may make a bronze spacer to bring it back to nominal on assembly . We shall see how it goes together. Cheers Ade.
Stuart Models are running parts too fast imho and pinching pennies on material. I'm burned out on their products now, many of the castings are too small to bring to spec with a nice surface
I don't know which parts you have a problem with but if a dimension is quoted in fractions you have a wide margin to still be in tolerance with. Don't obsess over tenths if tolerance is in 1/16" range, for that is a sure way to baldness😉😂
Hi Ade, nice job, great to see someone talking through the interpretation of a casting. Great end result, I think the polished flywheel looks great as a display piece, I would have done the same. It was a decent casting really, seen much worse. Cheers, Jon
Nice work Ades. I'm enjoying your build series mate. Keep them coming 👍. Cheers, Aaron

Great video with good explanations. Look forward to the crank.
Nice work. FYI my S50 has a fiber washer behind the flywheel. Thanks for sharing.

The holes and pins in the molding flasks are the problem most of the time as they are being used constantly.
Looked very nice and true turning on the shaft. Dressing the inner part of the rim added to the finish. I was worried when you clamped it in the small vice if it would leave marks on the rim.
Excellent work, as usual!
Lovely job 👏
That is a beautiful piece. nice work ! very well thought out.
Thanks for the video Ade, nice work 😎

Hello Ade,
Very nice work, you must be extremely pleased with the outcome.
Take care.
Paul,,
Very nicely done
I so enjoy this series! Especially the narration. I myself wish to do this sort of thing in the future!
Learning a lot of trick!
Tidy, looks great glad you worked on that inside edge much better now.

nicely done
Thanks Ade

Most of this stuff is way beyond me Ade... but I really enjoy watching what you are doing... also really love the commentary as you work.
Great job. I made a right mess of mine many years ago. Live and learn I suppose. Next time if there is one I might try it on a face plate

Hi Ade, Loved the ruler trick to find the centre. I will be using that.
Simple but surprisingly accurate . It works on a drill press really well . Cheers Ade.

HI ADE, I WOULD PUT A BRONZ THRUST WASHER BIHIND THE FLYWHEEL. REGARDS RICHARD.
So would I lol

Any reason for the drill and tap on that angle?
How do you get the pulley to spin in the opposite direction to the chuck.??
Ha ha . trick of the trade. lol. Cheers Ade.
Is there a fibre washer in the box of fixings????
Yes there is but it is thinner than the drawing suggests . I may make a bronze spacer to bring it back to nominal on assembly . We shall see how it goes together. Cheers Ade.
