The Secret Huts of kunanyi / Mt Wellington

  • This was a day that changed everything for us. We thought we knew the mountain, its tracks and its huts like the back of our hand. But then we heard about some old historic huts that are not on any public maps. Secret huts - more impressive than any huts on the map. And then a chance meeting led us to another bonus hut. We were amazed that we could have spent some 20 years and more on the mountain and not known about them. The locations of the huts are kept secret to protect them and we try here to respect that.

    We are Flo & Nord, just two runners who love getting up in to the mountains. Together we are FloNo Trail. We live and run in wild and remote Southern Tasmania, the little island state of Australia. Each week we post a video document of one great run. Sometimes just the one of us, sometimes together, but always out on the beautiful trails of Tasmania ... and occasionally Austria and beyond. We'd love you to subscribe and get to know our trails too.

      Run Quixote Thank you @Run Quixote! It really was overwhelming - such a special place. Always love finding out, I don’t know everything (and it happens fairly often:)

    What an amazing find. Brilliant cinematography and sound! What an amazing adventure in such a familiar place. Always something new to learn and see. Just goes to show what is available to all of us.

    WOW!!! Holy excitement FloNo Trail hahaha what an amazing day on the mountain :-) Thank you so much for sharing an incredible day of discovery, and your joy in what you found is beautifully portrayed in yet another stunning video. Wish I lived in Hobart when I watch your videos, so many tracks and mountains to explore :-)

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety +1

      I know - I hope it came across - we were so excited. We had so much more drone footage but didnt want to use it in case it showed people how to get there. The huts - especially the last two - are so well maintained and cared for - yet isolated and cut off from where people normally are. Hobart is good but you have so much close to you - Cradle!!!

      CLFurlong Thanks Chris. I’m not sure if I can express how excited we were to get to the last two in particular - SO special - and Terry was such a great bloke - he’d been coming here for years and looked after them to some extent. We just love running and exploring together - when we can. We’ve been lucky in the last little while.

      The FOD Runner It really was! And it really did change how we saw our mountain - such a special place with such a rich history. And to think those huts in such beautiful condition exist where so few know where they are, tucked away in the own little corner of bush. We just LOVE it. Thanks Andy!

    Wow, this was quite the exploration! You 2 never cease to amaze me. So so fun to see you running together these last few. Really ups the dynamic of your channel since the joy and wonder is shared between you both as you show of Tasmania! Exploring like children in awe and wonder. Beautiful!!! You guys did it again. 😉

      Run Films Connect Thanks Tom - we‘ve been so lucky in the last little while to be able to run together. And its like a mobile date! So much fun and so great to be able to explore and discover together. (Today was another one of the those days and we’re just SO excited to share it with others). It’s funny - looking back at the video, I can see just how excited and genuinely STOKED to discover these hidden gems. So cool.

      A quest indeed Tobs! It is amazing - there actually is a decent little track to Kara if you know where to look and we have been past so many times and would never have seen it.

      Fresh Tracks Media - yes, it makes you think. I like, tho, that our Parks and Wildlife officers know where they are and maintain them, but keep their location secret and they appear on no maps.

    Ever have one of those days that changed everything you thought you knew about where you run?

  • @stillshunter
    @stillshunter Před 6 lety +1

    You nailed it in the first ten seconds guys, “I think this has to be my favourite yet”. This production has such a great feel. Tempo was relaxed and the run was more an adventure. I’m sure you two were somewhere between the ages of 7 and 12 😁 Thanks so much for bringing us along for your little escapade. Also thank you for showing respect for the places and their continued isolation.
    The track between the second hut and the third, Kara, looked spectacular. The environment seemed to change significantly to a more wet forest. Must have been such a nice day. (What was you total kms for the day?)
    How are you going to top this one? Can’t wait to find out...

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you Mark! It's not often where you get the chance to really feel like a child again - and this day was really like that. The vegetation and the landscape change so much over the course of the mountains 1279m. Rainforest, low alpine vegetation, lush forests and barren bolder fields. Already looking forward to next week's video - we went on another AWESOME adventure:)

    Really enjoyed watching this video! Some great trail running trails in another part of Wellington Park to and from Norris Hut. You might have to add that hut to your list.

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety +1

      Adrian Bol - thanks Adrian, glad you liked it. There're are some great places in the mountain. It's been a while since I've been to the Norris Hut, tucked in behind Mt Montagu on the Mountain River side. There's probably some others too but as I understand it many of the older (wooden, but also stone) huts were destroyed in the various fires last century. Thanks for stopping by

    • @adrianbol153
      @adrianbol153 Před 6 lety

      Thought you might have been there if you have been exploring the mountain for 20 years. Two of my other 'secret' places in the park are the caves under Lost World and the walk to and under The Yellow Cliffs (longest and highest sandstone cliffs in Tas) opposite Collins Cap. There must be so many special places in Wellington Park still waiting to be found.

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety

      Adrian Bol - now that's interesting. Not sure I know where either of those are. Are the cliffs those behind Mt Marion? And the caves around to the west of the main cliff system?

    • @adrianbol153
      @adrianbol153 Před 6 lety

      Yep, cliffs behind Mt Marion. Follow Glen Ghu Trail from Nicholls Rd or Myrtle Forrest. From Nicholls Rd follow it until the track starts to go uphill and past some large fallen trees over trail. Will find a track going of to the right (downhill) well marked with tape. Will meet Glen Dhu rivulet (beautiful ferns) and cross to find track below sandstone cliffs with great formations and views.
      Caves under Lost World are the longest and deepest terrestrial caves in Tas. Many entrances and exits. One entrance is just to the right of where the track from Old Hobartians reaches Lost World or, if you follow the (vague) red dots leading through Lost World to the point where it goes down towards old hobartians you will find this entrance a few metres to your left and down. This cave even has a thick rope to get to a lower section. But many other caves are to be found by just trying out easy to reach 'holes' amongst the rocks. Exploring the caves is like exploring tunnels in pyramids.

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety

      Cheers - will try and get there soon. Was just up on Mt Faulkner and had a good view of the Yellow Cliffs from there. Thanks for the tips.

  • @LucasChamberlain
    @LucasChamberlain Před 6 lety +1

    I love Scout Hut! I've been there 2-3 times since I first learnt about it earlier this year. Did you guys find the 'loo with the view' amongst the rocks at Scout Hut?

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety

      Lucas Chamberlain I know, right! We didn’t find the loo - but it sounds like an interesting place:) Have you been to any of the others. When we got to Kara, I could have moved in, right there and then. That little clearing, and the sun came out, and it was just perfect. Have you been there, or to the Retreat? Thanks for stopping by. Where are you off to next?

    • @LucasChamberlain
      @LucasChamberlain Před 6 lety +1

      FloNo Trail I went looking for Luckmans Hut once but to no avail! I'm posting a video tomorrow from last Sunday, but I'm also heading up to Launceston tomorrow for the weekend for an event. Not sure at this stage what walk I'll try and fit in as the forecast is not great.

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety

      Lucas Chamberlain - The funny thing is, you can see Luckmans from the Big Bend on - if you look in the right direction - over the road from there is the old Ice Skating rink. I’ll be sure to check out your video tomorrow - be interested to see where you got to. I know what you mean - always difficult fitting in the walking / running, filming and editing. We were out at the Dead Island today and it was amazing.

    • @LucasChamberlain
      @LucasChamberlain Před 6 lety +2

      I've never properly explored that area (Dead Island). There was one time I followed the North West Bay River upstream from Wellington Falls and then cut across the marshy area just south of Dead Island, but I didn't stick around, because I think it might've been threatening to rain.

    • @FloNoTrail
      @FloNoTrail  Před 6 lety

      Hey, Rick the Human - yes, we have but not this time around. Some fantastic places on the mountain. I wonder if the proposed cable car would impact them at all?
