  • In this video, I discuss the top (respectful) complaints I see in the comments of my channel. I always enjoy kind comments whether it's in agreement with me or disagreements. I wanted to address the top complaints about my collection and the hobby itself. I also feature records that I picked up over the holidays. Bands/artists such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Horace Parlan, The United States Of America, Van Halen, Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, Miles Davis and more are discussed in these conversations.

    What is very interesting is that SOME music lovers & audiophiles are a bit too entitled, especially in the comments section. Each person has a right to purchase and do what they want with their things. If they assisted in purchasing vinyl and audio equipment, that would be a bit different. Keep doing what you’re doing! Love the channel!

    I actually remove shrink, but keep the hype-stickers - then use the current vinyl storage solutions sleeves, and keep everything together that way. It's good that we all have different ways of collecting, storing, etc. it all adds to the conversation. Happy 2024 Melinda, enjoy the streams and the points raised 🙂

    Melinda, props to you girl and Happy New Year! You know, all of us in the vinyl community collect records for our own reasons. Personally, I still have every record I've ever bought since 1976. I am guilty of selling some of my old records at used record stores to get money to buy the CD versions (I was young and dumb). Luckily, I have been able to replace nearly all of them. I have had several duplicates (and triplicates) that I have accumulated, and I usually give those away to friends and young collectors that need a break from today's prices. I am a fan of hype stickers! I have always removed the shrink wrap, but I always cut out the stickers and kept them inside the album jacket. (My friends thought I was stupid, but I'm glad I still have them.) Ignore the critics and do your own thing. I really appreciate your postings!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Před 7 měsíci

      We all got rid of our records when CD's came along. That was the thing to do back then. I'm glad you have rebuilt your vinyl collection.
      Currently, that's what I do with my hype stickers when I make the decision to get rid of shrink wrap.
      You are very kind to share your records with younger collectors. ♥️🤗 Good for you. Thank you and take care.

    Like yourself, I too am a “record” collector. Hype stickers? I tend to keep them on the outer sleeve like yourself, and if removed (for whatever reason), I store them inside the record jacket. I find myself in 100% agreement with all of your personal preferences. Like yourself, I too am guilty of not knowing the newer music or artists of today. I enjoyed your presentation here, and let me say that if we should ever cross paths, you’ll get no argument or complaint from me! Take care now, and Happy New Year!

    Hi Melinda,
    I collect CDs (and SACDs), but I call them "albums". I also agree with you on "space issues" concerning the media storage. My listening room is quite small at 12x15 feet or so, and I have to squeeze in a lot. My husband, who loves to do wood-working, built a new CD storage cabinet for me based in part on your example of how you store your vinyl. The organization, for my CDs, is now so much better than it was before. That is a real blessing.
    About the stereo gear: For most of my adult life I have been chasing gear upgrades. I too hear all the time that "vintage is so much better". That is simply, at least in my experience, utterly false. In fact, current equipment is infinitely better than the vast majority of "vintage". I recently became the proud owner of a pair of Adcom GFA-565 mono-blocs. "But Tasha", you might say, "these are 30 years old." That is correct, except that I had them completely overhauled by a gentleman who specializes in the rebuilding of Adcom amplifiers. He put in up-to-date electronic components and did a few other things. These new components are of significantly higher build quality than what was used OEM. The difference in sound, is phenomenal.
    Recently, I replaced my Adcom GFP-815 pre-amp (about 7 years old), with a Parasound P6 Halo. Again, a giant leap in sonic performance. As I love the mid-century modern style, I had to get a pair of speakers to match the decor. I tried all kinds of actual "vintage" speakers, most sounded rather dull and lifeless. The best of the true "vintage" I had were Polk Monitor 7s, with upgraded, high-end cross-overs and new tweeters. They sounded quite nice. Then I heard the Wharfedale Linton Heritage, and I just had to have a pair. Here was a speaker that looks "vintage", but is internally ultra-modern in terms of materials and components. There are some analogs from KLH and JBL that are similar, but don't compare. Speakers like the Klipsch Heresy IV, for example, not only are much more expensive but seem to use 40+ year old materials for the drivers and the electronics in their cross-overs is stuck in the early 1980s. I am sure that there are other manufacturers that provide similar, but this has been my experience.
    I have a vintage CD player, a Pioneer Elite PD-59. What an amazing CD player! The transport is probably one of the best ever created. The onboard DAC, is however, hideous now. It runs through an external DAC. Such a difference. Yet, I have an "up-to-date" Marantz SACD with resolution that often the PD-59 cannot match. Although, the Pioneer reads CDs instantly, while for the Marantz it takes a good bit of time.
    As far as "new music". As a "mid-80s" girl, surprisingly I love the "classic rock" music from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s. I don't really like, with some exceptions, music after 1986 or so. In fact, I am an absolute fan of the "Second British Invasion". ☺ What I wouldn't give to time-warp myself to say 1984, put on a miniskirt, fishnet hose, stiletto heel pumps, a jacket with the huge shoulders, and go from one concert to another by my favorite bands when they were in their prime, giant hair and garish make-up and all. 🤭😁💗💗💗

      Oh wow! I love that your husband built something for you by hand. It truly has some love built right into it. ♥️
      You have methodically built an amazing system. I wish I could hear it. ♥️🤗 Very cool.
      I grew up in the 80's and 1984 was my favorite year for music and for life in general as a teenager. It was just as magical as you may think it was. The music changed in the mid 80's and by 1986, the radio was unlistenable. You are so right about that. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed reading this comment. Congrats on your gear, collection and husband. We are blessed. Take care.

      @@MelindaMurphy He also built my audio rack too. Although, he will have to work on fixing it. Some of the wood he used has unfortunately warped a bit. 😔 My favorite year in music, I think, is 1982. More specifically my favorite period, it is from 1982 through 1984. The music of that period, and 1984 was a banner year... so many good things. Have you heard Van Stephenson: Modern Day Delilah? I think that, and Van Helen's "1984"(especially "Panama", "I'll Wait", and "Hot for Teacher" on that album) capture the essence of that time period perfectly; as does Bananarama's "Cruel Summer". ☺☺
      I wish I could hear your system as well... perhaps with a glass or wine in hand. I have to say, I do love the "analog" sound. I have this passion of cassette-tapes, and own several 3-head / 3-motor decks. When you record a CD onto tape, especially with my Aiwa or Tascam, it gives it that warm analog sound, sort of like a record. Are you on "Audiokarma"? If you are, please do say hello. I am there under "AgentPepsi1" as well. 🤗😁☺

    In the 1980s I lived in a student home full of music lovers. Fun times. The CD era started and we simply used the term "Album" for a release independent of the media it was available on (LP or record, CD, or cassette at the time). An album on CD was almost twice the price of the same album on LP or cassette, but the sound from CDs without the ticking, clicking and all that of LPs was amazing.

    Melinda, you’re having fun! Keep on doing what you’re doing! I bet the “Division Bell” sounds fantastic on your stereo system! I love the song “High Hopes” on that album. David’s pedal steel playing is spectacular on that track. Happy New Year! I just got home from a couple record stores. I found a beautiful copy of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Soul to Soul”, Pat Metheny’s “80/81”, and a couple cool old psych albums. I bet you’ll find lots of amazing albums in 2024. By the way, your husband is very lucky! Not every wife would buy her husband a nice bottle of Bourbon! Enjoy seeing U2 in Vegas! That’s going to be unbelievable! I only saw them once, it was for the POP MART Tour, and it was at the Silverdome in Pontiac Detroit on Halloween night. I took a job in Boise, Idaho, and had to fly back just for the show! Album (in music) can also refer to a CD. "Vinyl" to me is a relatively "modern" term (I called records, records or albums; and 45s, 45s, singles, or ...records). But then again I still say phonogragh at times (hey, my stereo receiver has an output labeled "Phono").😊

    I'm always surprised when The division Bell isn't loved. To each their own of course. It's an amazing album, but it's also so different from Animals, Wish You were here, DSOTM, or The Wall.
    I always felt The Wall would be a better album without comfortably numb on it. It's a break, a point to chill in an album of chaos, just my opinion.. David and Roger's styles can clash (and clearly their personalities too), but when they worked together, we get magic.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I think the more I hear it, the more I will like it. My husband loves it. ♥️ I definitely think David and Roger are better artistically when they work together. The Wall is great but could have been edited just a little bit to make it even better. Thank you and take care.

    • @thatderek
      @thatderek Před 7 měsíci +2

      The Division Bell (Pulse) tour was incredible but I admit the album was mediocre, not bad at all but it was a little uninspired. David and Roger have styles that balance well together. Too much Dave and the mellowness can get boring, too much Roger and the government contempt with abrasive vocals puts me in a rotten mood. But together...the beautiful melodies interspersed with flashes of passion and confidence are what made Floyd one of the most important and influential bands of the last 50 years. The Division Bell was OK but if the rest of their catalog sounded like that we wouldn't even be talking about them today.

    I am with you on keeping the best sounding version, whether original or remaster. I get that some people are into the historical aspect of the first pressing, and that is fine, but for me it is about the music.
    On hyoe stickers and shrink wrap, I generally try and remove the hype sticker carefully, the re-apply it to the storage sleeve in a location that minimizes the obstruction of the album art.

    Great stuff M and Happy New Year! I've never seen the hype on Diver Down!!! That was KILLER!!!! Overall I think there are so many different rules we can put on ourselves as collectors and there truly is no "wrong way" on how/what to collect. The one thing I've noticed with myself with almost 20 years of collecting is that those rules have changed A LOT for me as I developed and grown as a collector. The collector I was 20 years ago would hate the collector I was 12 years ago which would hate the collector I am today lol.

    Another great video and very informative about why you collect the way you do. I'm very much of the mindset that it's your collection and equipment and we each have to do what's right for ourselves, although it was interesting to hear your reasons. As for new music, I find that there's still so much old stuff I've yet to discover that I only get to hear a limited amount of new stuff, some great, some not so much. I do get to hear some K pop courtesy of my lovely daughter and 1 of my granddaughters. It's not for me but they both like it.

    Happy New Year Melinda! I've never understood why people care how we all collect our records, how we store our records, and whether or not I keep the shrink on some and not on others?
    People never cease to amaze me. If it's not a gatefold and the shrink is on it and it's in good shape....I'm like you, I leave it on. It's such an obvious extra layer of protection for the front and back cover art work.
    When it comes to vintage gear...it's hit and miss. I still have my 43 year old Pioneer SX 980 Receiver that is still working like a charm but I had to upgrade to a brand new turntable and went with the classic Technics, SL 1200 GR because my vintage Rega Planar 2 became unfixable after many refurbishments.......It became too much of a pain in the ass after a while.
    I am now on the hunt for a new integrated Amp for my turntable only.....everything else, my tape deck and CD player, will go through my Pioneer receiver.
    I'm going new for that as well.

    Well this was an interesting video, catchy title. I am pleased to see a VC member who respects the benefits and necessity of better and above average performing audio equipment. I am constantly unimpressed with so many record enthusiasts who have these very poor sub-par (crap) stereos in the background. I sold audio equipment for 12 years in my 30’s and learned mountains of info and heard for myself the difference in details and depth in music with more expensive equipment. Now I have mentioned this MUST in improving your set up and to use some of that vinyl $$ towards those improvements. All replied in many negative comments, to me this is a must and really stupid to ignore. Every VC person I most appreciate have upper end equipment, this means they hear what is supposed to be heard. Your take on vintage equipment is correct, never buy these pieces unless you know how to repair. Also new modern well built equipment is far more precise and detailed. Also I thought of myself as you mentioned comments about OG versus New fancy reissues. Sometimes I may get jealous of those who can spend mucho $$$$ on these expensive packaged repressing. Thats it……bye for now.

    Hi Melinda! Great topic. As for Originals, shrink wrap, hype stickers, etc., I’m with You. All of these are case by case situations. In some cases, the original first pressings were not the best sounding versions. Sometimes second pressings were released quickly, that corrected issues with the first. The Beatles are a good example of that, which I learned from Andrew at Parlogram. Although that Abbey Rd, isn’t one of those cases. 1st press of that album is Definitely the best sounding. I too love having the hype stickers on the classic records. So often they remind me of seeing them in the store when they first came out. Which is part of the nostalgia factor. But I do not keep the old shrink. Silly but I don’t like the wrinkled up end of the shrink at the opening 😂. So I always give them new vinyl storage solutions sleeves. As for the hype sticker…. what I do (after I remove the shrink) is take an exacto knife and carefully cut the hype sticker off the shrink. Then I slide the hype sticker under the new outer sleeve. Ooh you gave me a new record idea! I want that McCartney Chaos album :). I just got the Division Bell album as well. I have the same opinion as you do regarding the album, but I am enjoying it more on vinyl than I did on cd when it first came out.
    Have a great day!

    Hi Melinda. Whenever I buy new vinyl I will always take the shrink wrap off. But when it comes to hype stickers I really love them, especially when they give little bits of info on the album such as titles of some tracks, the colour of the vinyl etc. I think it's just as much a part of the packaging as the album cover itself. I find that most hype stickers 9 times out of 10 can be peeled off the shrink wrap and I stick them to the protective outer sleeve. And if you want to call them records I think that is absolutely fine. It's personal preference. Some people call them records, and some like me prefer to call them vinyl. Neither of them is wrong IMO. The only small thing that I find a little irritating is when I hear people refer to more than one record as vinyls. I just prefer to say vinyl as the plural word. Take care Melinda, and happy new year to you and your family ❤

    Hi Melinda, happy new year to you from Australia. I am guilty actually of commenting to you about hype stickers. I remember 40 years ago talking to a co-worker while working in a record shop together. He asked me, what is the first thing you do to a record when take it home? I said, removing any hype sticker because the artist paid big money to present the cover in a certain way and not have it spoilt by any distracting stickers. The hype sticker is like a price sticker, it's there for sales purpose only. He laughed and said, I couldn't put it better myself.
    I must say, I have started using the term "vinyl" now instead of record because of all of the different formats available. Sometimes a new release comes in cd and vinyl, cd only or special release vinyl reissue. Now cassettes are said to be making a comeback. We adapt with the changes I suppose.
    Have a wonderful year.

    I like that you mentioned keeping an original copy is on a case to case decision and the example you gave was a great example.
    I’m on a kick right now of buying color vinyl versions of LP’s and the hype stickers are essential to the value of the record. I will even remove them when I get rid of the shrink wrap and place the record in a protective sleeve, the hype sticker goes on the protective sleeve.
    I too started with records and then cassettes and CD’s, but I can adapt and if you go to any platform that sells them it’s described as “(vinyl)”.
    I have a vintage kenwood stereo system and either need get it refurbished or replace. The speakers are getting a little deteriorating and the sound has some static noise and not crisp and clear as it was 35 years ago. The one thing I would have a hard thing getting rid of is my linear tracking turntable that can even play one song or in different order by laser reading groves. The only way it wouldn’t work is if there’s more than 8 songs or there’s a long pause in a song. I don’t even know if they produce that kind of turntable anymore.
    Also I didn’t comment on your previous video “Five years on CZcams”. First congrats on that accomplishment and I have only been watching for about the last year. I enjoy talking to anyone about music and appreciate many styles. I have seen enough that as soon as I start watching a video I hit the like button. I know that I’m going to like it because you’re sharing your journey with vinyl and music collecting. I inherited most of my vinyl collection from my mom and our love of music was always a special bond that we shared. I even remember as a young adult, skipping going to hang out with my friends to go see my mom, order pizza and just listen to and talk about music. As I always say, music is like a Time Machine, it transports us back to the first time we heard it or heard it at a concert. Keep sharing and I will always listen. 👍👍😊

    Great video Melinda! I agree about the records, needle and record player era. I had a hell of a time finding just a basic “receiver”. I don’t care about Bluetooth features and everything else they now come with.
    As far as hype stickers that’s one’s personal choice I feel. Back in the 70’s we were told to remove all shrink wrap because it damages or warps the records. I now wish I would have left the shrink on. My album covers wouldn’t be so worn now if I had.
    Not all records come with hype stickers so I’ll rip that sucker off if there isn’t one but if there are cool hype stickers I will keep them on with the shrink wrap.
    I’m in the same boat about new the music. My 3 kids (26, 29 & 36 year olds) all share songs with me of new bands and artists they like. I love some of their favorites like Post Malone, The Midnight, The Backseat Lovers but not all new music today is released on vinyl either! But I have to say IN MY OPINION I love the older music way better. I love the imperfections on a recording like a finger sliding up a guitar string or the squeaky chair at the end of A Day In The Life from The Beatles. All the new stuff is auto tuned. I am not a fan of auto tuned. I like hear the the mic sound of a breath on a live record. (I could write about this topic in nauseating length but I won’t 😊).
    And finally I think people are too quick to post comments from a computer but wouldn’t tell you face to face about their opinions.
    I respect everyone who admires great music, great RECORDS and great stereo equipment but not all of us have a way to have it all. We get what we can get. We have what we can afford and with all that said I think we should just enjoy the music any way we can hear it and talk about it all. Without judgment.

      I’ve been collecting LPs for over 50 years, CDs for 35 years, and now digital files. Lately I have been streaming music from CZcams as part of a family account. I don’t listen to the LPs much, and my family is not interested in them. I am slowly giving them away to younger collectors, but I have been listening to them all one last time as I go through them. I have been re-discovering the music and recalling why I bought the LPs in the first place.

    I always remove the shrink wrap. As for the hype sticker 9 out of 10 times I'm able to peel off the hype sticker and then reapply it on a new outer record sleeve. If the sticker cannot be removed, I simply cut the sticker out and placed the sticker between the new outer sleeve and the record album. Happy New Years and wishing you continued success with your channel in 2024. 👍

    Love this video. On the hype sticker issue, I have found myself doing a mix of either keeping the hype sticker and shrink, like you, depending on the condition of the shrink. Often, and especially if I love the hype sticker, I remove the shrink and cut out the sticker and place it inside the protective outer sleeve of the album. Also, and this is going to sound weird perhaps, If I really like the hype sticker and I don't want to place it inside the protective sleeve after cutting around it. I throw it in a small cigar box with other stickers and junk...lol

    Hi Melinda, really enjoyable video as usual 😊. Just a thought about the “record vs vinyl” debate. Like you, I grew up listening to records long before CDs existed. Back then, we used the terms “record”, “LP” or “LP record”. I don’t think you mentioned LPs so maybe it wasn’t commonly used in the US, but here in Australia it was quite common. So to me, in terms of distinguishing media formats, I would know exactly that an LP is a vinyl record. I would consider LP to be a better term to vinyl because the latter is in fact a reference to the material the disc is made from and not so much the format itself. After all, no one refers to CDs as polycarbonate! So logically, I believe that what we call vinyl, should really be called LP (or single or EP). But I’m probably a lone voice 😂😂

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes, LP was a term used here in the US. It wasn't as common as record back in the day but it would be a good alternative now for the people that dislike the term "vinyl." I think your spot on about why they are referred to as vinyl nowadays. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

    Great video as usual Melinda. Being a person that for many years now, I leave most records sealed. I only cut shrink to relieve stress on those that need it and I love Hype Stickers. I have a massive digital collection and whatever I buy, I will have a digital copy. With said digital, I have several copies of releases, Mono, Stereo, Quad whereas I do not with my VINYL (see that? lol) In my eyes, to each their own but debating or having a conversation just to be informed on someone else's way of doing things is a healthy conversation. I have yet to still set my old stereo system backup. I will not play my records so the only reason to do it is to play-grade records I will sell off. I have 2 more amps and 2 more turntables so i might leave my Marantz Amp and Turntable in the boxes and setup my Technics. Some newer music I've started to listen to are Crown Lands, Indigenous, The Big Heavy. Oddly enough there is a ton of music I've never even heard about from 90's and 2000's that others share CZcams links with me and I go check them out. Happy New year to you and your Family Melinda.

    It's quite noble of you to respond to these questions but in the end, it's all your choice and your world.
    I, for one, absolutely love hype stickers and shrink wrap. I'm always doing my best to find vintage albums in the shrink as they are ALWAYS in the best condition. So many love to scream "Shrink wrap warps the records!" In all my now 48 years of collecting VINYL (see what I did there?), this has happened exactly ZERO times. To this day, I'm still annoyed that I allowed some stranger my brother knew to talk me into taking off the shrink wrap of my mid'70s "Beatles VI". This was around 1978 and within a year, the jacket was trashed. Why? Because I didn't have or know about protective covers. Never again became my motto.
    Also, if I find an album I already have and it's sealed, IT STAYS SEALED. I refuse to ever allow clueless types to attempt to guilt me into opening anything I don't want to open. I'm also done dealing with the disappointment of finding out a record is worth 25% to 50% more if it's still sealed. Just because some schlep goes on a power trip to tell me otherwise is laughable. I now have many, many sealed items and they are staying sealed.......hype stickers and all.
    As for listening to newer music? I flat out refuse. There's no way I'm going to force myself to listen to songs that go nowhere and are slammed throughout with autotune......and that hellish crutch effect is now everywhere. It's even ruined what should've been the perfect new and last Beatles song (Paul and Ringo's HORRIBLY autotuned backing vocals on the choruses.....grrrrrrrrrrr!). What's great is there are so many artists and songs from yesteryear I've yet to hear. With that in mind, as I buy that stuff, all the music will be brand new to me. I've been doing this for decades but really went into high gear in the 1990s. As a musician, I recall people insisting "Oh! You gotta hear this NEW song! It's awesome! You should learn it!" At the time, I thought, OK. I'll give it a chance. Even if I thought the song was aardvark snot, which most of them were, I'd learn it, and- a few weeks or months later- NO ONE WAS REQUESTING IT ANYMORE. Gee.....I can't understand why? 🙄🙄🙄🙄 Yet, I was hearing....and still am hearing....people scream out "Play the Beatles!" or "Play 'American Pie'!" I'm a dinosaur and proud of it.
    Anyway, nice video (as usual) and remember to follow your own heart. Use the new equipment......keep the shrink and hype stickers on.......do what's best for YOU. It does wonders for the soul!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Před 7 měsíci +1

    I too like the Hype stickers. I have found if you remove the shrink and let it sit in a warm place for a while, not in direct sunlight but somewhere at about 90 degrees F the glue on the stickers will soften enough that you can usually peel it off the original shrinkwrap and move it to the same spot on a protective sleeve, then use one of the protective sleeves that are a bit larger (usually made for double or thick album covers), you can put that over all the rest and the hype sticker on the protective sleeve will now also be protected. I'd say I have about a 95% success rate on moving the stickers to protective sleeves. When the glue just won't let go, I just carefully cut around it with an exacto knife and use double-sided Scotch Tape in rows that are the same size (Cut with Exacto Knife as well), so the whole sticker backing which is shrink-wrap stuck to it, is covered in double-sided tape. Then put the sticker on the protective cover. Boom, bang, done!
