  • On today's Dock Talk, Jeff is spending some time with a gentleman who had a huge impact on his life, Nigel Calder. An author, off-shore sailor and all-around marine systems guru. In this two-part series, Jeff and Nigel discuss lithium batteries, grounding systems, lightning strikes, high output alternators, a new solar panel and an exciting new development in lead-acid battery technology.
As well, Nigel is introducing his new Boat How To course designed to teach boaters how to be self-reliant on the water and save money fixing things yourself. boathowto.com/#aff=pysystems

Absolutely the best content anywhere for a guy with a 20 year old boat, 10 year old batteries, 60 year old dreams and a 15 year old outlook 😎.
I’m on the fence with LiFePO4 or Firefly energy storage decision. One huge point Nigel made was that the typical weekend cruiser will probably never reach the theoretical lithium battery cycle lifecycle limit with the way we sail. Someday, though, we may get to cruise the way we want…then, we will need (want!) those awesome energy storage systems.
I hope Nigel’s 5th edition of the “bible” (with more on foam core and lithium, as well as the newer charging systems) is on its way soon.
    Great discussion.

I'm in one of those schools that has a year long course. Shout out to the Marine Engineering program at Broward College! Jeff Cote is one of my inspirations, specifically to aspire to great things. I've got Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" Fourth Edition on my bookshelf based on Jeff's praise of Nigel. I hope one day I can have the privilege of interviewing Jeff Cote and Nigel Calder about boating!

Thanks for the super kind feedback! We can surprise ourselves by 1) having a vision of where we want to go or be 2) getting there one step at a time.

When I first started watching this a week or so ago I was blown away as this seemed way beyond what I needed to know. Now that I finished listening I have learned some pretty important stuff. Two years until new battery technology? That is about right about the time for me to swap out my lead acid batteries. THANKS. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and especially "it is never as easy as you thought it would be......" which I am continuing to experience with almost every project.

Thank you for the discussion. Jeff you just said it - education and awareness. I have to say it is challenging to find info on lithium Iron batteries. I have spent the winter trying to get good answers. Im still not satisfied with what I have found. It seems like the industry is in sync. Great interview. Nigel just said it. The industry has a challenge to get the right info out to those of us that are trying to understand how it should be done.

    two subjects not quite covered:
1= Use of surge protection device to mitigate lightning strikes. SPDs short circuit phase, neutral and ground during a strike avoiding arc flash within equipment.
2= Have an independent temperature shut down system for each electrical equipment location. OCPD do not protect against over temperature.

It isn't clear to me whether the limited 0.3C capacity of charge of some Li ion batteries is due to a build in BMS or whether is a about the raw cells only accepting 0.3C.

I'm a little confused, Nigel says the code is a minimum based on safety but then, moments later, says that LiFePO4 batteries that simply turn themselves off without notice are not approved. If an electrical system that fails, albeit safely, is no longer certifiable then this seems like an expansion of the codes reach.

  • @airgead5391

My idea is that there needs a new standard where a specific BMS of a Li ion battery can talk to all kind of charging devices like alternators, solar panel battery chargers and so on. I haven't pondered upon it a big deal yet, but this is the direction it should go IMHO

Mastervolt can do that. They have lithium ion batteries, chargers, inverters, alternator regulators, and solar controllers, that can all be connected to their MasterBus network. They're pricey though. I'm sure other companies have this or are working on it as well.

Hi Airgead, good point. Communication between batteries and charging sources would alleviate some of the concerns about lithium BMS disconnecting the battery because of overcharging.

I just removed my 1 cylinder 3000 RPM generator from my engine room. There was no way to get good access for service and inspection. I thought: what the heck: having two diesel engines on board: everything double, including through hulls, double fuel filters, and so on. Many years ago thought that the best way would be LiFePo4 and a huge alternator in order to use the main engine in a efficient way to recharge.

it turned out, only detectable once removed, that the plus cable of the starter battery had been chafed through over an about 1 foot length, and " repaired" with isolation tape. Also there was a loose hose that was visible once we removed the water pump, necessary to remove the generator from its shell, so that was the reason it was leaking... I bought the boat when it was 3 years old, and I searched the internet and found there had been a fire in the motor room 2 times.
