- This video shows the original Comet roller coaster in Crystal Beach, Ontario, Canada before the park closed and the ride was dismantled. It was restored to its original glory in the Spring of 1994 at the Great Escape Amusement Park in Lake George, New York. In 1997, it was rated the Number One Wooden Roller coaster in the entire world!

I rode this in Canada in 1972. Scared me so much I never road another coaster again. What a ride.
This bad boy scared the heck out of me as a kid and as an adult. When you sat at the top of the big hill you looked straight down in to Lake Erie. Locals know that in it's earlier life that one of the cars went off the tracks and straight in to Lake Erie. We also had a teenage friend who stood up on it- RIP.
I'm going to call bullshit on this 8 year old comment. A car did not leave the tracks and go into Lake Erie. Tales like this abound regarding roller coasters both defunct and operating. They are just that...tales. Not true. It is nearly impossible for a roller coaster car/train to completely leave it's tracks. This never happened with Comet, and if Deb J Darnley wants to return 8 or more years later and defend this myth, I invite her to do so. Spreading lies about roller coasters is damaging...and stupid.
The Comet will not die!
My dad worked at the race track. When the races would go to Fort Erie we would rent a cottage in Crystal Beach from a lady named Mrs. Walker. 3798 Crystal Beach Dr. I loved the park and the beach. thanks for the memories.
Im glad this video still exists. Based on recent POVs it runs very slow now. I haven't been back because there's literally no other reason to go to this park. They removed everything that made it great (pun). It's a generic six flags now but no room for the bigger rides.
I miss this Great Escape...for real. Just got back from it today and it has changed so much..prices way too high..rides way too wack..in the 90s this was the best place ever :/
The Retro Decade Revival Project is gonna bring them back.
omg! it's so wierd not seeing alpine freefalls or the wave pool or any of the water park near this thing.
I loved goin to crystal beach every summer as a kid, This was the greastest place to go an the comet was an always will be the best
My nephew and I went on this coaster this weekend at great escape, he and I loved it !!
i know Im randomly asking but does any of you know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me

@Chase Arjun thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
roce this like 4 times on acid back in 1978. fun ride
Went on the comet in 88. I was to small to ride but got on anyway, nearly shit my pants. My security bar did not lock completely, my dad held me down during the drop.
One of the better videos!!!
It was way better at crystal beach for 2 reasons: It was right next to the water. And it went up the hill slower. I don't know why, but I just think that those made it so much better.
665yoman I’m too young to have been to Crystal beach, and I haven’t ridden this yet (look forward to it within a couple of years though). That said, it makes sense for it to have been better at Crystal Beach, for 2 reasons.
1. Restraints-from the pictures, it looks like it had fixed lapbars at Crystal Beach. In the relocation, they were replaced with PTC’s more modern individual lapbars, which go lower and therefore allow less airtime. This is the primary reason, but
2. Breaks-as an enthusiast, I notice wether a classic coaster has kept it’s classic skid breaks and hand release. Unfortunately in the relocation, the breaking system was replaced with modern magnetic breaks activated by computer sensors. The track for skid breaks is clearly there, but you just go through it at an aquwardly slow pace. I know this is me nitpicking but the skid breaks let you keep your speed longer.
Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake Park in northern PA still uses the systems I have outlined here, if you are interested in riding a coaster that gives the classic comet feel.
@@urbex_coasters Phoenix also kept it's skid brakes at Dick Knoebel's insistence. Comet has had minor modifications that have lessened the ride from it's Crystal Beach days. The two dogleg, right-hand rabbit hops have been re-profiled and had some of their severity removed. Also, yes, the view of Lake Erie was incredible, and just being at Crystal Beach made Comet more enjoyable in Canada. The buzz bars were definitely the superior restraints as well.
I went on this roller coaster when I was 18 year old
This could not have been filmed in the 2000s, because millennium force was open then. Even if they were only talking about wooden rollercoasters, Boulder dash opened in 2001
You are right it was filmed in 1997. It was posted in 2009. My nephew is the kid in the white shirt and yellow poncho in the front seat. We were invited by park management to come out and fill seats for the filming. I'm in the last seat. It was a great day despite the rain as we had a dozen rides in a row during the filming.
i go there all the time but im in long island wit Splish Splash
I bet most Pinfari's have been rebuilt more than 3 times.
+Richard N I get a kick out of when the announcer says this roller coaster was rebuilt 4 times. Actually, it was built once as the Cyclone, the rebuilt 3 times after that.
What a lame coaster compared to it's predecessor
