Went here for a severe concussion on my forehead when I was six. Fell while rocking in between some tables. I went to the emergency room but the concussion was so severe that I got transferred to the main hospital. Staff was very nice and kept me comfortable while testing me for anything more serious. Everything was good in the end, but I have a permanent bump on my head from it more than 10 years later. Thanks Phoenix Children’s!

I don't remember doing any pre-op when I had surgery in the early 90s. My parents and I went to the waiting room, and I played NES there until the nurse or surgeon came and got me. They took me by the hand, and walked me to the operating room. Times have changed I guess?

I've had a major surgery done to reconstruct the torn patella ligament in my left leg. I also had a couple other procedures done during this surgery because of some other orthopedic issues I had on my left leg. The overall reason I had the surgery done was to regain my ability to walk around comfortably because of having cerebral palsy on top of the problems I was experiencing with my left leg. It all started from dislocating my left kneecap in 5th grade, and I went through a total of 9 years of painful walking (which included chronic subluxation of my left kneecap and left knee arthroscopic surgery that didn't resolve this problem initially). Another reason why I had gotten the surgery done was to help with some of the orthopedic issues that have developed over time as a result of having cerebral palsy. I couldn't use crutches because I can't use my left hand very well, so I had to use a wheelchair.
It's been almost 2 years since I had gotten the surgery and I am so glad that I had switched orthopedic surgeons because my pediatric orthopedic surgeon was not wanting to perform such a major surgery because of the amount of rehabilitation that I had to do and regaining strength. The orthopedic surgeon who I see now listened to my parents and I discuss this ordeal and he agreed that surgery was the best way to fix it besides physical therapy. He literally felt the pain I was feeling when subluxating my kneecap in front of him. He even X-rayed both of my legs instead of just my left leg because he was able to pinpoint what I was dealing with when seeing the differences between my left and right leg.
However because I had turned 18 that year, I didn't see a child life specialist at all. I did stay overnight for a couple days and was even visited by a therapy dog. I have noticed that the girl in this video didn't specify what kind of surgery she was getting. There could have been a disclaimer saying that not all children who were getting surgery were going to see a child life specialist because it’s pretty likely that other older teens didn’t see them either.

The tip for going to sleep faster with general anesthesia (the mask) is to take a deep breath of the gas and hold it. Do that about four to five times and before you know it you'll be out like a light! Hope this helped anyone, and good luck with any surgical procedures you'll be having! :3

'as usual'...only doc/anesthesia/nurse are shown in surgery videos...it is the Surgical Technologist who: gathers ALL things needed for the surgery, checks their sterility indicators, establishes and arranges a backtable/mayo with ALL instrumentation (as if they were doing the case themselves), scrubs in to set up, gowns/gloves the surgeon and any others admitted to the sterile field, guards the sterile field from contaminations, protects the patient for infection control (sepsis can cause death), performs counts of items to prevent Retained Foreign Objects in the patient (lawsuits), basically knows the steps to each surgery and each surgeon's quirks.........but do not get compensated as they should. these are the staff you don't see when you are asleep! thank God for them.

When I was 5 or 6, my mom and dad lured me to the hospital by saying that my classmates were there for a field trip. I didn’t suspect anything. When we checked in and went to a room, my mom and dad let me watch the little tv they had there. I was calm even tho I hated the hospital. When a doctor came in, they said that they were going to put caps on my teeth. I didn’t know anything about the caps at that young of an age. When it was time for the procedure, they wheeled me away and put the anesthesia mask on. The next thing I knew, I was awake in bed eating a popsicle. That was the most calm I have ever been at the doctors. I can’t even get a needle without crying.

I have a story to tell. It’s about me. I was born 4 months early and at 1 foot long. Because of this, I went through 17 surgeries at a young age and stayed in the NICU for 195 days in 3 different hospitals. I was legit on the fence, leaning to death. However, I survived and here I am! Want to know anything else? Just ask me! I don’t mind

Take it from someone who has had surgery, when they give you the medicine through the IV, please, please ask for the medicine to be diluted with a saline solution or whatever they use, because if it not, The medicine will sting like no one freaking business!
