TIME STAMPS:
3:04 -- Big Boy speaks on his first getting into DJing at the age of 13 years old while he was coming up in Culver City, California. They go on to discuss his family's deep affection for music, getting his first set of raggedy turntables, DJing parties for the love of it, the DJs of his day that influenced him and Big Boy's love for the art of crate digging. They also talk about how essential a universal knowledge of music was at the time, DJing becoming watered down as well as the impact of A Tribe Called Quest's jazz sampling on Terrace Martin when he first heard Big Boy drop 'Check The Rime' on his show.
8:36 -- Big Boy gets into his pre-radio days of working as a bodyguard for The Pharcyde. He digs into how much fun he had touring the world with them, never wanting those times to end and almost passing on the radio job to stay with the group. They go on to discuss Big Boy's automated hip hop phone line he created called 'Wudd'up' alerting LA locals of upcoming parties and his good friends The Baka Boyz asking him to join them on a line of BBQ sets leading to a night of hosting Power 106 which quickly evolved into a career that would establish him as an LA icon.
14:11 -- They discuss how Big Boy's mornings on Power 106 soon became one of the most coveted places to have your music played on the West Coast. Big Boy goes on to talk about coming into the game with little to no knowledge of radio, his only expectation being to have fun, what he was told by the man that hired him about what was needed to succeed in the business and taking inspiration from radio host Russ Parr. He also speaks on how he handled a mistake of calling the station Power 107 instead of 106 during the first break.
19:01 -- Big Boy talks about how he feels about the legacy of the Power 106 billboards that were posted in LA during the course of his time at the station. They discuss the infamous 'Morning Obsession' board, his loving the opportunity to be creative and have fun with those shoots. Talib goes on to give shout outs to LA DJs such as Fuzzy aka The Connector for going above and beyond to make sure artists like himself got shine one way or another and Big Boy tells how Fuzz was always one that he could bounce ideas off of and get honest feedback.
24:15 -- Jasmin asks Big Boy what it was like for him being a prominent LA radio host during Lakers domination. He speaks on how The Lakers made his job easy with just a mention of their name, call-ins made by greats like Kobe and Shaq as well as how all those wins brought the city together from all sides. They go on to discuss Big Boy making every effort on his show to promote black and brown solidarity, the "enoughs" in his career, being held to a different standard than the Ryan Seacrests of the industry as well as recognizing things that could be offensive and learning from his mistakes.
29:29 -- Big Boy explores his losing over 250 pounds from a duodenal switch surgery in 2003 which almost killed him and he's asked if there are any regrets of the procedure considering all the complications. He gets into the weight loss journey beginning with a charity challenge from Will Smith where he donated 1 thousand dollars for every pound Big Boy lost, putting the weight back on soon after, his coming to a realization that he wouldn't live much longer if he didn't' take action and wondering if his audience would still love him after all the lost weight. Big Boy also goes on to explain his credit cards of life swiping theory with his personal card being morbid obesity.
34:35 -- Big Boy tells the story of how a phone call to a friend and listener of his show ended up saving her life as she was on the verge of committing suicide. He goes on to talk about how important his listeners have been to him over his career, feeling like he needs them just as much as they need him, times of talking people out of doing drastic things during off-the-air phone calls, using work as a place of solace and healing after his mother passed and his first-hand witnessing of radio's evolution to the podcast.
39:58 -- Big Boy speaks on how happy he was when he first found out his show would become nationally syndicated. They discuss his not fully understanding the concept at the time, the local listener count falling due to his not speaking directly to LA, what they did to get the Los Angeles audience back, his still learning on the job and the gratification he feels when hearing people tell him they listen and watch him while he travels the world. Talib also talks about his daughter telling him she wants to "show" him her latest recording rather than "play" it for him and how it's a sign of the times we're living in.
44:55 -- Big Boy's famous 'Luther Luffeigh Phone Taps' is brought up. They go on to discuss his early days of phone pranking as a youth and how recording random taps on reel to reel for fun led to them becoming regular features on Big Boy's show. He goes on to guarantee Talib that he could successfully phone tap him, explains how he would do it and also illustrates some of his best work on his friends with themes of replacing a dead dog and convincing his brother he got busted in Mexico. Talib goes on to share a time he was phone pranked by Russian trolls who posed as Greta Thunberg and Bernie Sanders, which can be heard on CZcams.
58:58 -- Big Boy is asked about his entering the film industry via his production company, Ida's Son Productions. He talks about his getting into the business to have something that is 100% his own. They also discuss his move to podcasting with BigBoyTV in order to roll with the times, it becoming a hub for different ideas, drawing inspiration from 50 cent's success on Starz and feeling like the sky's the limit. Talib goes on to ask him if it was a deliberate decision to name his production company 'Ida's Son' and Big Boy gets into his early reservations about discussing his family life on the air.
1:08:28 -- Big Boy speaks on the impact of his good friend, comedian George Lopez. They go on to discuss George's "homegrown" comedy, people seeing themselves in him and Big Boy knowing early-on how successful he would become. Big Boy responds to the question of who he would have on his Mount Rushmore of rap, outlines what he tells people when they ask who was his favorite interview, talks about learning more from one off-the-air sit down with Snoop than he did from any other convos with him combined and how he knows when his interviews will lock a listener in.
1:14:28 -- Big Boy gets into how and why his getting a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame felt different than all his other achievements. Pinching himself during the ceremony and displaying tears of joy because he knew what it represented and meant to his family as well as countless others in his community. Big Boy is also asked about the potential of his starring in a sitcom. They discuss his doing a pilot years ago that didn't work out, wanting to do things on his own terms and Jasmin goes on to ask Big Boy what we might be able to expect next from him.

Man there's NO WAY the culture wasn't gonna fuk with Big with or without the extra lbs.. we were glued to the shows cause he made us love who he was as a person..
And shout out to the Baka boys too!! That era In radio, Southern California, and hip-hop.. they really curated the sound track of my formative years as young brown kid and I'm one of millions.. Thanks Big for all the years brother..
Thanks for having Big Boy on this - my man IS L.A. hip hop radio, and a good dude besides. Oh, and RIP Kangol Kid - I'm glad Big got him and made sure he got his flowers before we lost him.

I remember when Big was just a guest on Tha Baka's show. It was amazing witnessing his growth over the years. The Baka Boyz and Big were huge reasons why I got into music and appreciation for radio.
I remember them days too but I remember the first night he was on. Never as a guest. I didn't like him. I even wrote a story on his feed about that because I didn't like change back then. lol. However, he ended up being the best thing that happened to that station. I'm sure you remember them Jewish songs he used to sing at the end of the show. Good memories.
I Love Big Boy. I grew up in LA and remember when he was still "Big" lol. A living Legend on the west coast!!
(Edit)
Also he looks like a turtle from Super Mario hhahaha
Big boy says he's knows martial arts, then about 10 mins later he casually paraphrases a bruce lee quote! I love when I catch things like that in interviews!!!
Mad respect for the Lakers cap with the Mexican and American flag Talib.
For southern Cali, this man held it down. All listened to in the 90s was power 106 where hiphop lives.
Big Boy’s voice is synonymous with LA radio
Big boy gesture 1:06:35
... lol great episode
Big Boy getting interviewed now that's interesting especially with his experience and energy you know he will be the interviewer...true or definitely true?
He knows how it works. And Talib isn't an idiot interviewer. Big Boy will allow himself to be interviewed. They'll be both be building.
😆
Great interview. We need more of these. People who do the interviewing for the culture.
We have more than 100 eps for you to check out!
That's how I know how iconic big boy is: every time I heard the phrase "big boys neighborhood", my brain is conditioned to expect to hear the response "big boy!"🔥🔥🔥
Big boy that dude
I've said it before, I'll say it again: I see you all the same places I'm at! You have great taste my friend.
I loved Bigs character with the Spanish accent. The other callers would start speaking Spanish and he would say I dont understand and they would ask what language do you speak? And he would say My Own and they hear it like Myown like it was some language they never heard of 😆
🤣🤣🤣
Man such a good ass interview. I love when the Interviewers become the interviewees. It's like they finally get to get a lot of shit off their chest that they can't do because of their role responsibilities. I first noticed it with Stretch and Bobbito. Its so refreshing
Big Booyyyyyy in da morning
Amazing Interview. So refreshing!
Another great interview! 👏🏾🙌🏾✊🏾 I've learned so much about Big Boy during this interview. A humble man indeed. He has solidified his legacy and is a legend in the culture of radio and hip-hop. This interview is going to age well. 👌🏾 Might I add that Talib is a natural when it comes down to interviewing and engaging with his guests. A multi-talented and multimulti-faceted brother. Love seeing him shine in this light.
Always Gone LIVE! Dope interview, amazing conversation... Congratulations to BigBoy on getting the Hollywood Star of walk of Fame

PLEASE get DJ Quik on here!!
I been down with the BIG BOY since he was on in the AFTERNOON and Baker Boys was on in the mornings. Back when he was REALLY BIG BOY 😆. I still remember the end if the year episode he did way back when and he broke down about his Mom who had passed that year. Maaaaaan me and my Pops use to crack up on that phone tap where he locked his self in his trunk. I remember DJ RAY. Whatever happened to SexyAsssss Julisa?!!..i know i spelled her name wrong. I STILL remember seeing BIG and FUZZ outside the movies for the Duece Bigalo screening. Not premiere..SCREENING. Saw Eddie Griffin there too. GREAT timeZ. The homie would always come through with the screenings..STILL cant believe Brotha X is gone 😥..i know thats random. But all in all THANK U BIG BOY and THANK U KWELI and Jasmine. Much LUV TO THE PEOPLES PARTY and MC DO DIRTY is in my TOP 10 MC'z sssssSTR8 ☝ rrrrrRUHHHH. There is nnnnnNOOOOOOOOOO WAY those Joella Quimby skits could get played these days 😆 AT ALLLLLLLLLL!!!!! Joella was even on Duece Bigalo 😆. That Luther phone Tap where he was doing all those BAD impressions 😆!!!!!!! I just remember the end where the lady is irritated and trying to get off the 📱 and right before she hangs up Luther still trying to do impressions says " U AINT TRYNA TALK TO CHRIS rrrrROCK?" 😆!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The People's Party just keeps getting better and better in many aspects. Big Boy is iconic for LA, grew up to him. His presence and impact to LA and Hip Hop culture is a blessing. My favorite phone tap was the one where he called acting like he was stuck in a trunk of a car 🤣🤣😭. Props to the show!
Big Boy is so intelligent and intellectual. Thank you for this interview Prime Minister Kweli.
I been rocking with big boy since the 90's. Who remembers big boy fat friday. Take a fat friend out to eat promo back in the day.

I'm 27 & this is my show
The Jerky Boys were definitely in the Jerky Boys movie.
I wish he would have told us more about the problems with the Pharcyde. Its sad that they went out the way they did cause they really put out classic music.
He’s so cool and comfortable out in front..
Big Boy!!! A true legend in radio and in hip hop always cool in the pocket I'm glad he lost all the weight and that he's comfortable still in his own skin and his influence is still prevelant in the industry. Much respect
Salute.
Love Big Boy💯💯💯💯💯
Talib you're looking sharp with the beard cut back!
Kweli you’re a great interviewer. Ma sha Allah

I think around 1:21:45 ish what Big Boy tryna say is Kweli a high respected/loved hip-hop historian with more integrity than most in the game
It would be sick to have tk interview king tech or sway for the love of hip hop as well as stretch armstrong and bobbito!!! Richard humptyvision daaamn i havnt heard that name since the eaaaarly 90s and that wasnt hip hop at all lol

I’m my favourite rapper, but Talib is my favourite interviewer
JESUS CHRIST COME IN MY LIFE AND SHOW ME THE WAY
Your audience is what????? Quote Talib!! Oh its sugar daddies classic lmao
Actors on Jerky Boys was the ACTUAL Jerky Boys! Not that that made the movie any better🤣
Talib can you get Sway and MC Hammer?
31 years old but point taken Jasmin
That light-skinned vs dark-skinned Pharcyde comment was whack. We gotta stop doing that bull to each other
You don't know nothing about Tony A. He did a mix with N.W.A. mahn where's that tape. It reached me in K.C.
At 1:06:06 Jasmin mentions the demographic n I was tripping, too. I grew up on talib n I'm in late 30s so I guess she's not so ridiculously but damn... more like 30-50 I figure.
:)
U never hear Talib Kweli come out my speakers
Well then you, and he, are herbs.
R.I.P KANGOL KID PIONEER HATIAN IN HIP HOP

Why Big Boy don’t have any black ppl on his show or in Big Boys Neighborhood?!
His show “Caters” Mexicans and Latino’s
Why is talib kwali acting like Black people wasn't already here thousands of years before slavery... A very low percentage came over on boats bro… Go and look at the images of the native Americans back in the day they were the same complexion is Wesley snipes
