1966 aside England's only knockout wins in their entire history were Belgium, Paraguay, Ecuador, denmark, cameroon and Spain. Spain was on penalties and after being a worse team.
We are clearly a 'best of the rest' team. And typically nowhere near A tier nations. Southgate has won more knockout games than all other managers combined. Including wins in 90mins against Netherlands and Germany. 2 finals, a semi final and a well played quarter final to France in 6 years. We can now back up our words with results. Thank you Gareth

We were terrible before he took over. If you said 8yrs ago England would make 2 euro finals and a World Cup semi final we would all have jumped at that. Thank you Gareth.

Sorry as a fan in his late 60’s I take the stats like won most qualifying matches than any other manager or even Kane being top England striker with a pinch of salt. Bobby Charlton didn’t have easy groups and new footballing countries to play, nor did he take the amount of penalties Rooney and Kane have taken.

@@Oakdenalan 4 dream draws. A lot of England teams in the past would have won against the teams Gareth came up against. Gareth loses every time he comes up against a team that is on our level or slightly lower. Today's England is not the England of even 15 years ago. Do you know how successful the Premier League is and how much money that has flooded into English sports because of that? Do you know how successful England is in international tournaments in general? Rugby World Cup, Cricket World Cup (2019), 2nd in the Olympics in Rio -- 2nd, beating China! The standards in England today are far higher than they were in 1999. Many of the best players and coaches ply their trade in England, that wasn't the case decades ago. If you remeber, the stadiums were crumbling and the leagues were in financial trouble. Today, I go to an Indian restaurant in Kuala Lumpur on a Saturday night and 50 people are watching the Liverpool game. We deserve a lot more than Gareth's poor quality football.
@@andrewpearson5504 absolute nonsense, past England teams floundered and 100% would have done against modric Croatia in 2018, against Germany 2021 and Netherlands 2024. I doubt Sven or capello would even have beaten Denmark in 2021 or the swiss in 2024.

I am convinced England made the finals in spite of the way they were managed. Their talent dragged them to the finals despite all of Gareth's best attempts to sideline them.
Exactly. Last 4 tournaments we have had the easiest draws possible and still not won anything. People saying Southgate has done well? We should have won the last 2 Euros and got to the final in Qatar and Russia.
Our talent didn't drag us anywhere in 2004 or 2006. This narrative that these players are 'so good' they win despite the manager is ridiculous. Our 2006 team was better, had an 'elite' manager and yet did worse....

Has been the best manager for 2 decades, has changed how the country gets behind the team and has done a great job, but its the right time to step away and let experienced winning manager step in, we have a group of players that should be winning things. My namesake with sensible words as always. He was mentioned in the post Euros final broadcast of Men in Blazers on CZcams. I mentioned his Cup Winners Cup winning goal in comments, as people just talk of his substition in Euros for Linekar.
Just over a year ago this Spain team lost to Scotland in the qualifiers. From that starting 11 only rodri survived. The manager had the guts to cut under performing players despite their reputations and bring in the next generation.

Get KLOPP before Germany do. (Or Pep, Carlo, Lippi, Jose etc). Get a serial winner. Klopp knows how to get the best out of world class boys like Trent Jude Foden Saka Ice-Cole etc
Gareth is a gentleman and that has reflected within the whole squad and set up and he's turned a lot of negativity into positivity, unfortunately between himself and his squad perhaps they haven't got the technical nous to get over the final hurdle.

Seems like he's become the greatest manager in the World since he resigned.
All the pundits know they'll bump into him on TV and at boozy functions every week so they daren't tell it like it is.
Here's how it actually is .....He took us as as far as his talent allowed.
He improved the structure at the FA, and that may be his crowning achievement, but he doesn't have the instincts required, at the highest level, to get us across the line, even with the best players in generations. He repeatedly came up short, when it came to selections, tactics, and in-game management. He turned an attacking squad into 11 Gareth Southgates, over-cautious, defensive, slow .... boring. That's just about acceptable if you win something, but losing, playing truly awful, unwatchable, football, will be my memory of his time in charge.
If the FA are going to limit there options to an English manager as opposed to the best man for the job then you can forget about it will be the same story for years to come.. there are no proven English managers that have won anything, go and see if Klopp fancies it
Klopp will manage Germany. He wouldn't want the aggravation of managing England.
I care about as much as I did about the Euro’s, the FA are still there and they wanted GS to stay on so there’s very little hope we’ll get the manager we need.
Name another England manager whos made the Euro final back to back. World Cup QF and Semi. People might not like to hear it but ill wait. With a new manager i bet they wont get as far.

Under Southgate, England failed better.
No more cope. No more excuses. He just wasn't good enough. All the goalpost shifting and failure rewarding talk led us to being humiliated again for one man's ego and lack of tactical wisdom. It was bound to be the case. He failed upwards and lucked out but eventually luck runs out, and you're in a Final. That by itself is seen as some participation award. Yeah, right. Southgate had nothing special to give. It was just painful to watch. Of course, the propagandists will do backflips over an allegedly good performance. It was an easy run to the Final that Southgate made look hard.
