Big Wednesday - Carnage at Hartlepool Aug 2023

- A meet at Hartlepool to paddle across the bay to Seaton Carew for a few hours surfing. The surf forecast was giving 2 to 3 foot surf which would be just nice and not too strenuous for my back.
However, after paddling from Hartlepool over to Seaton Carew the surf was much bigger.
I had taken a few smaller runs and working my way along to the sandy beach from the breakwater to avoid being trashed on the rock ballast.
Pulling off from my last run left me on the inside of the break line and on paddling out I hesitated (instinctively trying to protect my back) when I should have just punched my way through the crest I purposely left an angle to the wave to initiate a my sideways rodeo run, throwing my paddle, body and everything else into the wave and hanging on. I actually found myself lying across the back deck sculling for support to remain upright.
Once everything had subsided I was way inside the break line leaving me a long paddle out to break before trying to punch through to the outside.
At this point the surf seemed to be magnified and relentless, wave after wave, each wave breaking and slapping me in the chest and dislodging my spare paddles from the front deck.
This carnage continued for well over 15 minutes without any letup or any sign of an edge to these long walls of water and no escape beyond to the others waiting patiently beyond the break line.
Eventually I made it back out to the others who'd had enough by this point and we all paddled back to Hartlepool Headland for a rolling session inside the tiny Pilot Pier.
Everyone gave it their best and I even managed around d 3 myself as I felt id given my back the ultimate test earlier.
My back rehab will now be just doing what I love Sea Kayaking!!

Go pro always makes the waves look smaller so they were pretty big for a sea kayak! How do you avoid your bow digging in and going vertical into the sand surfing that when it’s big steep and closing out all along the line?

If your just new my advice is hook up with a club to speed up your knowledge and correct technique and avoid learning bad habits which will put you back years.

Aye, it was a strange day! Sorry, but to reply in detail I've copied my previous reply I'd sent to Ian...
Yeah the forecast was totally off, which we began to realise on crossing the bay. It's been a long time since I've exposed myself to surf and probably 18month - 2 years since I've rolled and that time my shoulder locked (both cuff repair operations) while sweeping the paddle 😂
Hence my back and previous issues left me with a great dilemma when I'd surfed in beyond the break line, even on the small sets, so to be faced with a big one breaking above me, I turned at the last minute to avoid a reverse loop but knew I'd hold a paddle brace, as it turned out while braced I ended up lying over the back deck feeling myself going over, ending up sculling for support back into the paddle brace 😂😂 Then the other waves I was reluctant to punch through hard putting too much strain into my back plus not being able to see over the top what i was going to be greeted with once over the wave. The length between the waves was huge 😳 I've not had that wavelength before, and lasted a good 10 - 15 mins.
So yes you could say..."Crazy" anyway eventually things eased off and we returned to try a spot of rolling practice back at our launch site, happy in the knowledge I'm still able to roll albeit not not up to my younger days standard 😂😂😂

Yes, but I was looking forvsome 'gentle' surf to ease me back in slowly, but as usual there not much easy or slowly in my life 😂😂 Once behind enemy lines it was waiting to make the right move when the opportunity arrived 😂😂

For your question, I'm guessing something has dampened your kayaking spirits (sorry just realised the pun, not intended) as a practical guy (my wife Shirley hates me when I say the word "practical") I try to remain positive about most things but as you may gather from my video's sea kayaking has been a great love of mine for more than 50 years, yes other sports Squba diving, paragliding, paramotoring etc have come close and 'got in the way' of my kayaking but the kayaking has always been my favourite. I've often referred to it as my 'salt water injection'. I've always tried where possible to assist people in any sport and am keep to help in any way I can. I have always had so much positivity from my kayaking that I would love to see yours restored.

Oh I do worry about your spine. I'm not sure your surgeon would be pleased to see what you went through today!! You stuck at it though but I'm just sad that after all your hard effort, you didn't get what you came for!! Now for goodness sake, rinse off the kayak for the umpteenth time and have several large whiskies!! I think you deserve 'em. PS. Your rolling was pretty ticketty-boo too! All the best, Pam
Thanks for you concern Pam, it did however confirm that everything he did is holding securely. I do need to work on my core strength now to build up areas that I feel are weak. I start specialist Physio on Wednesday so I may take a short piece of the video with me to show what I need to work on. P,s, I'm having one of those whiskey thingies you speak of as I'm typing this....Nice I could get used to it !!

I understand what you say but like you have mentioned regarding subscription on your channel, if folk don't subscribe they will miss out on notifications of new content, the click and ping volume could be reduced but it will probably need balanced with the other soundtracks it competing with at that precise moment.
