Those who get lost in the darkness could get back if they called upon God. It is like the people in Joseph Smith Jr.'s time, where they were in apostasy simply because they did not call upon God and ask.
Where does the Book of Mormon say that the Lehites switched to the local foods? I see that nowhere. In fact they obeyed the Law of Moses. That requires certain foods that can't grow in tropical climates.
