  • Hello friends! In today's "day in my life with type 1 diabetes vlog" I take you along on a summer day in my life! I also talk about my recent experience with diabetes burnout, device fatigue, feeling tethered, and not being motivated to take care of myself. If you are experiencing diabetes burnout, it is important you talk to someone about it - a family member, friend, a health care professional on your diabetes care team etc. Never keep it to yourself and suffer alone.

As you know, I am on year 63 with type 1. The fact that you are aware of BURNOUT is a very good thing. I never would admit it to anyone. So, as a result, I would develop periods of time where I was captured by both depression and anxiety. Since I was 8, I never wanted to share the endless trials of type 1 with anyone. I recently learned from a therapist, specializing in chronic disease depression, that by not sharing the burnout, many type 1s will try and fight the burnout by attempting perfect control. As you know, there is no such thing. After a while, the need to achieve perfect control can spread from the diabetes to other parts of your life, such as a relationship or job. I remember my late wife asking on occasion, “Doug? Why are you being so controlling?” What the therapist told me was so relieving. Now, after all these years, I talk with others about my type 1 and how burnout is another difficult part of it.
I got off the pump 3 years ago but, from watching your videos, I am now on the Tandem IQ. Still having infusion set problems but….if you can do the steel ones, so can I. THANK YOU…

I’ve posted here before that I’ve had Type1 for 55 years so I hear you on burnout. Yesterday I worked in the yard and forgot to do a temp bolus. Once I did that my sugars were already crashing badly. It’s that kind of thing that frustrates me. It doesn’t seem like you’re getting as much exercise as you are until BOOM. Then your Dexcom screams at you forever! I can laugh about it today but I was so frustrated yesterday. Always good to see you Michelle!

Yep, type 1 going on 28yrs now. Was in Spain for a week’s holiday and had one of the scariest hypos while taking an easy walk around the shops with my wife. It was around 24dgs and I still had 4 units on board. There was plenty of shops around me so my wife grabbed me a packet of sugary Haribo strawberries (the marshmallow kind) and I sat there scoffing the entire bag just praying my levels would come up quickly. I was trying to remain calm, mainly so my wife didn’t panic, but I felt like I was going to collapse. After my bloods came up I just felt like crying. I was exhausted and felt like I ruined the evening as we just headed back to the hotel.

So sorry you’re going through a burnout phase. And as I watch that portion, it was like I finally figured out my “ugh” with health. I often defend that Type I “isn’t that bad” or that since I’ve had it for 27 years, it’s really “all I know by now”.
I’ve been in a slump. Thank you for shedding some light and opening up so we can realize it is okay to acknowledge that diabetes is a hard condition to live with and that it’s okay it’s hard. You and your family are beautiful!

Its great having people there to talk to about the fatigue of managing this disease every day and so important for your mental health as it really does affect our mental health. This is great, thank you! I'm T1D for 49+ years & only started on pump 9 months ago, It does cause burnout because of all the beeping etc and struggles with failed infusion sites which are exasperating to say the least. My husband actually gets high anxiety over my pump, pretty much hits the ceiling everytime he sees it in my hands. This of course adds to my stress & burnout feelings, but determined to make it work because just as you say, the ability to stay in range most of the time is so much easier to achieve vs injections.

On the best days, I feel like an astronaut! Carrying my life support, doing All The Things. And...it's true, in the very best way. I am living an amazing life, and the pump made my dawn phenomenon just a bad memory. The technology is amazing and wonderful, and I'm grateful that I have access to it. But on the worst days, one beep and I feel like I'll never get it right...this despite more than 15 years of A1c down around 6. Burnout is real, and thank you all for sharing. I don't feel so alone.

Hello Michelle. Diabetes is tough sometimes. In the month of May I experienced something very similar to what you described when you called 911 (I am on pens). The problem was that it happened very often to the point of not allowing me to have a normal life. I was always scared of leaving the house. Things improved, but I feel very uncomfortable with this condition once in a while. T think most people around us have no idea of how we feel sometimes and how exhausting this can be. I like your channel because it makes me feel more connected. All the best!

You’ve been a good example of vigilance to keep your glucose levels in range, so it is understandable to feel burn out. Thanks for providing us good examples of good habits. Most of my T1D life I have not dealt with it responsibly (avoidance is not a healthy approach). I am very grateful for T-Slim because I am now in range most of the time, even when I forget to bolus. However, in recent months I have been much more responsive to my pump alarms and to bolus when I eat (my pre-meal bolusing needs to improve still). At some point a few months ago I determined to take care of problems immediately to avoid unnecessary highs. I finally recognized that being lazy didn’t avoid anything. If I wait until it’s “more convenient” (and it’s never convenient) then I am only hurting myself and delaying the solution (changing the cartridge, charging the pump, etc.) only means that I am going to feel bad and damage my body while I finally get around to addressing the pump issue. It was a very immature approach. It’s like exercise, or fixing the leak, or washing the dish, etc., “just do it now!”

It always feels like I have a second full time job! The only pump I have been on is the omnipod but I have to say I prefer it as it doesn't really feel like you're attached and the site changes are so quick and easy compared to seeing the tubed site changes. Not sure if Omnipod 5 is available to you there yet but maybe something that may interest you? :) Love your videos xx

I absolutely LOVE my tslim but my burnout is the tubing. My 19 month old likes to pull on my tube and almost rip it out, I keep getting my tubing caught on things, last night it was the rack in my dishwasher 🤦🏻‍♀️😭 or my pump just keep falling out of a pocket or my pants. Thank you ❤️! My biggest tip for a teen with diabetes (if I were to give one tip to my teenage-self at least) would be: don't be embarrassed about having diabetes, be open about it, and find a friend group that supports you. I tried to hide my diabetes in the 9th grade because I was at a new school and didn't want my new friends to know. Once I found a supportive friend group and was more open about my diabetes, I was happier and more well-managed. I hope that's somewhat helpful 😛

Hello Cassia! I was in need of a lot of insulin as well while pregnant because it makes you more resistant to insulin. So, at the time applying 17 units was a normal thing to me. I have type 1 diabetes for about 13 years now and over time I have noticed that the amount required has fluctuations for me. If you are in range with that amount of insulin, you are probably applying the right amount. Everyone is different when managing diabetes and insulin ratios. I have never heard anything about weight and insulin. I think these concerns should be addressed to your health care team especially if you are concerned about ratios ( that are so important to keep us controlled). All the best!
