I left Photoshop for one reason, and that's because of their swap from a traditional license to a subscription model.
I would rather pay once and not worry about recurring fees and have something I know I'll be using for the rest of my life.

I will say I’ve used procreate for years at this point and honestly for iPad and Apple Pencil it’s a great app. I do say where it shines is it’s portable sketch book area the technical pencil is pretty much all I need for sketching up my illustrations and I understand that changing brushes is a bit hard mid flow I think I have at least created and made multiple sets of the same brush with different settings over the course of time to minimise my need to go into brush settings and edit them but for new users who haven’t had the time to do that it can be a bit of a turn off and flow break.
I will say taking a sketch from procreate to Affinity Designer is a good jump if you are a mainly photoshop user as Affinity is basically photoshop and illustrator in one and might be more interesting to you Ross for your needs tho I personally cannot vouch for how good a painting app it is as I’m an illustrator type artist.

Photoshop is not going away anytime soon. Not only is it still the absolute best solution for creating digital art, after all these years, but also so many companies are invested in having their employees use it, it's pretty much ubiquitous as THE program to make professional art assets (besides Illustrator) so that it would take a huge momentum shift to switch to a different program. If you're interested in working professionally, you need to know how to use Photoshop, period.
Procreate is a super cool program tho, if you're making art for yourself it's a perfectly good program to use.

Currently finishing up the line work of a drawing, and I have more of an affinity for Procreate than Photoshop in the sense that Procreate is leagues cheaper and has animation option. Regardless of the price model, I think Photoshop will be around for quite a while. It is still the industry standard and if you want to work for a design firm or something along those lines in a professional capacity, it is almost guaranteed to be required knowledge. I mean, have you seen how long companies hold onto their licenses for other software? I only have the CC suite because my client pays for it. I always had my opinions about this app 🧐
My only complaint is the animation part. I feel like a second app just for animation would be they way to go.
I would GLADLY pay for that. They could really go all out and maybe replace the animation (data?), just put more 3d modeling stuff.
(Being able to make 3d models in procreate gives me goosebumps)
It's just lacking in my opinion. It can't really handle grouped frames. Maybe with a new app, it can support different types of animation.
    Puppet for example
Or add sound (ik people asking for that)
    Idk maybe I'm trippin.

If you need a comporimise between PS and iPad use, I recommend Art Studio Pro. I tried to love Procreate when I first got my iPad, but I had such a hard time adapting my workflow after 10+ years of Photoshop. Art Studio Pro, especially with the customizability of the tool bar and the quick shortcut menu that's also fully customizable (it's great for if you don't make it a habit to connect a keyboard to your iPad for shortcuts), I was able to scratch the itch and the next thing I knew, I hadn't made a photoshop painting in all of 2021 haha. Going back to PS in 2022, I really ended up missing the smudge tool from ASP, but PS still felt like home.

Everything you do is just so beautiful! 😱 😭 ❀. I hope you make that work a Print. I will buy it so quickly! Glad to see you test procreate! I dabbled in it a little bit. But the layer cap messed with my flow a bit and is the only gripe I have. I genuinely come to 100+ layers since I make a layer for just about every single thing. So I'm sticking with csp but may try to mess with procreate a bit more.

@D. Va Photoshop does feel super overwhelming at first. You are absolutely right that you will need it if you want to get into a professional field. I do artwork for a big toy company right now. The program I use 99% of the time is Photoshop. Other programs I use are Procreate (for quick sketches, because it's lovely for that), Illustrator (rarely, mainly for text, but I would use it more if I was a graphic designer), and Maya (for posing 3d models to draw from). Photoshop is the best place to start if you're just getting into all this stuff.

Photoshop, as the name implies, is made to edit photos. It's primary goal was never being a drawing / painting / digital art application, it just so happened to have elements which allowed it to be one while having little competition. So applications built from the ground up for the purpose of drawing would be, expectedly, more suited for the job

But I have always been interested in Procreate. Though I'm an automatically drawn towards any program that ISN'T subscription based

For the purposes of drawing, Photoshop is a bit of a pain. Adobe Animate especially sucks. Sure if you have the patience you can create cool stuff in it, but it's very clunky to operate. Procreate is my favorite app for art ever, just because it's so damn intuitive and simple. My method is that I turn off fingerpainting so that touch only does navigation and undo/redo. If Apple ever made a tablet exclusively for art purposes, I think they would absolutely kill it. And this is coming from a guy who's not interested in any other Apple products. I am hoping they'll make an A4 sized portable art device sometime in the near future, though I'm not sure if they would see that as financially viable enough. A guy can dream right?
