The pressure that the cellist puts on the string and the distance of the contact from the bridge is essentially what makes the distorted sound. Because it takes a lot of pressure, they use a more robust bow to make the sound heavier.
I saw a cat's tail in the background. I love them even more.

oh how I hated having to do vibrato on a violin...I could never get it right. I quit a decade before I heard of these guys and I wish I could try again...they are so inspiring!!

This appeared in my recommendations, so I watched it again. If that is Eicca's old house, and if the cats he currently has were the same cats he had when this video was shot, then I know the name of the one in the background. XP (Kirsi posts pictures of the cats all the time. Eicca does too, once in a while.)

I think there were differences, but blast it I'm distracted! First it was the cat in the background, and then I got to looking too much at Eicca and had to start daydreaming. And it doesn't help that Perttu is sitting right next to him. By the time I get over dreaming about Eicca, I flip to dreaming about the other. I'll just have to start the video over.

The black horsehair is much coarser and rougher than white, giving a lot more bite. Also the rosin they're using is for double bass (upright bass), which also gives more bite. The white horsehair is better for softer passages, the black for grittier, more hard-hitting metal. (I'm a cellist as well.)

Pertu also pulls out a bow with black horse hair when they start playing riffs because it is thicker and stronger. particularly for double bass but apocalyptica is too awesome for particular. :)

After a while you do stop tapping automatically. However once you get carried away like they do when they play..... Trust me, from experience I notice that I start tapping my foot without knowing. It's not just to count beats, but also to help focus on the music.
