What did archeologists find hidden in the Maligaimedu excavation site? | The Hindu

  • This is no ordinary ornament. It is a piece of bracelet, which is at least 1000 years old. It once belonged to the mighty Cholas who ruled south Indian peninsula.
This ornament, made of gold and copper, was retrieved in March 2022 at Maligaimedu, an archaeological site in Tamil Nadu
In February 2022 Tamil Nadu’s chief Minister M.K. Stalin virtually launched archeological excavations in multiple locations including Maligaimedu. It is a well-known excavation site 6 kilometers from Gangaikondacholapuram in Tamil Nadu.
Gangaikondacholapuram was King Rajendra Chola’s capital city. Here he also built a temple for Lord Shiva following his father, Rajaraja Cholan's footsteps. This temple is one of the Great living Chola temples which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Temples from that era have survived time and invasions. But what happened to palaces?
The discovery of a few brick structures and other artifacts in 1980 and the subsequent excavations at Maligaimedu answer this question.
Maligai means palace and medu is a mound. The Archeology department found 13 coarse brick walls which are remains of a royal palace. This is believed to be Rajendra Chola’s palace.
Since then, there have been several rounds of excavations in the trenches at Maligaimedu. Through the years, archeologists have been able to unearth shards of pottery, coins, iron and copper objects.
Pieces of a Chinese celedon ware, belonging to the 10 or 11th century, was also found indicating Chola-Chinese trade and ties.
The excavations are being carried on in a very systematic manner with utmost care to not damage the discoveries. The digging process starts only after several surveys are conducted with drones, thermal cameras and underground radars. The current round of excavations are likely to continue till September 2022.
Encouraging discoveries like the Chola bracelet within a month of beginning the excavation process has created high curiosity to find out what else lies buried in Maligaimedu.

It happens with every dialect, pronouncing words belonging to specific regions. However, I don’t mind anyone pronouncing my name incorrectly. Atleast we Indians can speak minimum 3 languages, it’s not common outside India. The mouth palate develops in childhood when a child starts pronouncing words with tongue, lips, jaws and palate. The minute changes which are not visible physiologically, but their existence is certain. This is why the most universal English is spoken in different ways. In western India it is called “lehka”

Most of them are destroyed by either pandiyas or northern india rulers or during muslim empire you can see only shiva temples survives as both chola and pandiyas are god shiva followers so they never destroyed the temple it survived. And some temples are older than 1000 years are still in tamilnadu but due to goverment have not taken any special status to that all stones statues are stollen , if there is no statue no people will visit there so it lost its true value. Many histories are burried inside indian govt or state govt are not showing intrest or eager to know the history just follows what british taught us. All histories before british rule were destroyed.

Sir, the possible reason is that once a kingdom is conquered, their first thing is to destroy their administrative area/building(i.e: Palace) but hesitated to destroy Temples because...most of the conqurers were devoties to either lord vishnu or Shiva and most of temples in Thamizh Nadu are dedicated to Shiva. During, muslim's invation, their motto is to loot the wealth of temple. During British rule, they used temple as bait for controlling peoples like if us didn't cooperate with british people, temple will be destroyed. Their motto is to use our land and people work resources.

remember three main figures, as you will find these three main figures in every major religion
they came from planetX called nibiru
they created the first station to mine gold in the region of kailash
as mining gold is a very complex and hard work so they created us as labours to dig out the gold for them
and that is how gold is connected to humans it is the most precious matter produced by our mother earth
its a very long story u can learn it through the writings of the first civilization ever created by those three figures
as per the law of nature on this planet
they rebelled against each other because one side was treating us like rats
and other side wanted us to be free as we should be

What's the big deal? Its just a palace - the world is full of such palaces, even much older. Tamils have almost a fetish with history, with an imagined greatness of themselves - while nothing found upto now is actually very old. Even a palace which is just 1000 years old is found in ruins!! Why is that? Who destroyed it and ruined it? That's more interesting than this constant hype and hoaxes by the Hindu about the imagined great Tamil history. Just a bit to the north in Andhra Pradesh there are so many very old structures, much older than anything that is found in Tamilnadu, but one never hears any noise or propaganda about the greatness of Telugus from newspapers there.

@@ranjith9152 Friend, what defines a particular identity and ethnicity changes over time. I am not aware of Tamils being mentioned in the Mahabharata - Chera, Chola and Pandyans all claim/have decent from diverse North Indian/Hindu mythological lineages. (BTW Udayan perumcheralathan is dated to 3rd century BC, long after the Mahabharata war). Whether they called themselves Tamils during the Mahabharata (dated variously from 3000 BC to 700 BC) is doubtful. The first attested mention of Tamils are either in the Satavahana era inscriptions of Andhra or Sinhalese Brahmi inscriptions of Srilanka as far as I remember. Its almost always foreigners and neighbours who name people and mention them as its a way to refer and identify and differentiate oneself from the neighbours or foreigners. Its obviously pointless for people living Tamilakam who would have been Tamils at that time, mentioning themselves by their own ethnic name. For example if Tamil kings built many temples and put up inscriptions that they built them, they will only mention their name, and not that they were Tamils, however if a Telugu person came and setup a small kovil, in an inscription it might mention that it was built by a Telugu who was called so and so. I hope you got my point. Also, no mention in literature like Mahabharata does not mean that the Tamils didn't exist.
