    Hey Pope- great one. But it's even deeper what Zep did than you imagine. They took a bunch of tunes from the 20s and 30s Black Bluesmen to make this (and others too). "Killing Floor" by Howling Wolf is the source for "The Lemon Song", But the “squeeze my lemon” line comes from Robert Johnson, “Traveling Riverside Blues”, from 1937 (Johnson likely borrowed it from an earlier performer (McCrae?) who did a precursor)."Trampled Under Foot" comes from Johnson's "Terraplane Blues" of 1936; he also wrote "Crossroads"- as Cream fans should know). They loved Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson and Sam Cooke (all acknowledged) too. Peace and be safe, man.

      i think the squeeze my lemon was made up by them bc after they do the solo in riverside they add that whole verse themselves

    • @neillenet291
      @neillenet291 Před 2 lety +1

      They weren't all "acknowledged" until the families of Willie Dixon and others sued Led Zeppelin for plagiarism and not including the original composers name on early pressings of the albums. They loved these great Black musicians so much they took much of their music and gave them no credit until they were compelled to do so.

    • @neillenet291
      @neillenet291 Před 2 lety +2

      But for the record Led Zeppelin did indeed make the songs better.

    • @27thangel23
      @27thangel23 Před 2 lety +2

      @@neillenet291 True, sir, true- but I think that was part of the Atlantic Records/ Swan Song problem, lawyer- induced. I'm 76 and followed them from the jump as my Dad and I were Blues fanciers, and I ONLY saw favourable mentions of Bluesmen from Jimmy or Robert. To be fair, I was in the Army for 44 of those years and didn't get to see everything they said or wrote, so maybe I missed something evil. But I thank you for the civility of your comment.

    Never a bad Led Zeppelin song. Each one becomes a favorite for a different reason. Depending on your mood there's a Zep song to comfort all of life's emotions. Just another reason they are the greatest band to ever grace the stage.

    Back in the day, often times they'd speed up sections of a song. They'd call it a "rave up" and it was designed to get people dancing and moving - which I think this song is a fine example of that. Bassist John Paul Jones has said one of the many reasons he was proud of their sound was because they'd be swinging and grooving so much on stage, people in the audience would be dancing.

    My brother, go look up Howlin' Wolf, "Killin' Floor".
    This song has been borrowed many times from old Black American Blues guitarists. I'm not sure who Howlin' Wolf got it from, but Zeppelin sure gave it new life beyond the 1950's, 60's.
    I LOVE Howlin' Wolf, also. He's Mighty genuine carrying the meaning of those lyrics, the pain in the soul.
    Peace to you, and keep up the posting.

Zep really is the best band to ever assemble. The combination of these 4 guys is like the stars aligning or something. John Paul's bass was moving and grooving in this song!!! It was just a marker of smart musicians honestly. There’s a great video where Jeff Porcaro breaks down the shuffle beat from Rosanna, and his explanation is full of “I got this from x drummer, and I got this from y drummer.”
      I loved it not only because he shows the humility of divulging his influences, but he takes these elements from all of these different styles and combined them for his own use. It’s amazing to watch.
