Porsche 981 Cayman GTS - The Noise!

  • Stock 2015 Porsche 981 Cayman GTS, featuring PSE - Porsche Sports Exhaust - including intake noise piped directly into the cabin (a GTS/GT4 exclusive). That's right, the car is this loud from the factory!
    Short of the new and unattainable 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the 981 will go down as the best-sounding generation of Cayman ever, to my ears.
    Also the best-sounding modern non-GT Porsche. And the best-sounding car in its price range.
    And probably, let's be honest, the best sports car available for five figures (American $).
    I might be biased. Prove me wrong.

    I own a 981 Cayman GTS since 2016. Still in love with it. Drove the 718 GTS 4.0 and was so disappointed. We love our 981 GTS. One of the best stock sounding cars ever. Enjoy it ❤️ The best from Bavaria

      I have base 981 I GT Silver and still think that it looks and sound better than any non-GT 982. It just was more analogue, the engine was crispier and angrier, and the exhaust was less muted. Also somehow they stopped making the Sport Techno Wheels

    I have a 2014 Cayman base with pdk and stock exhaust. I ordered PSE from SunCoast January of 2022. The factory hasn’t built it yet due to lack of parts. Cancelled order, will order Soul Performance Exhaust next month. Took my Cayman out early this morning through some twisties and man was it 🎶. The Soul Performance Exhaust will only amplify that 🎼, can’t wait 🏎

      Nice. Something about the exhaust routing on these cars, when you open up them up they all sound similarly great regardless of displacement.

      I had a similar internal debate before I bought this car, but I'm glad I went with PDK. It's mechanically satisfying in a different way (both upshifts and downshifts are dramatic), and enables me to focus more of my attention on the act of driving at the limit.
      Caveat, I have a SPB that gives me the manual transmission experience... But even there, I sort of wish it were PDK/sequential...

    I own a 2015 Cayman 981 GTS and concur it’s one of the best sounding Porsches ever. I’m intrigued to understand what exactly Porsche did as the 991.1 with pse does not sound that good. Fantastic driving experience and concur about the shifts with pdk.

    • @teddyframhein
      @teddyframhein  Před rokem +1

      It is interesting. The Boxster and Cayman have always been stuck with a longer exhaust per bank than the 911. Knowing nothing about exhausts, I'd guess it has something to do with that.

    i have a g4, love it.
    one thing though, is why does everybody refer to the "noise"? I would use "sound" not noise to represent the exhaust from a positive and desirable aspect. noise to me means unwanted sound, or background noise, random noise, the noise from something undesirable like a lawnmower on a sunday morning or snoring at night.
    just curious...

    That's awesome! What oil weight and brand are you using for performance driving and street? Also do you have PTV--you were really ripping on those corners--and the grip!!

    • @teddyframhein
      @teddyframhein  Před rokem

      Thanks! I've been running Mobil 1 0W40, which is the oil Porsche recommends and, I think, what they run in Cup cars (or was at some point).
      I do also have PTV, though the grip is probably more down to tire choice. I have three sets of wheels: 18" (pictured in this video) with Yokohama Advan A052 tires; 19" with Falken Azenis RT660; and stock 20" with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's.
      The Yokohamas are ridiculously grippy but don't last long. I wouldn't recommend any of the above for street use.
      PTV surely helps on corner exit, but the car is so adjustable on entry and has so much traction relative to power that I'm not sure it's a huge difference-maker.

    Glorious! Have you changed the steering wheel, because all the 981 gts' I've seen have that (in my opinion) ugly steering wheel with a screen on the left side, but you look to have the steering wheel from an older porsche?

    • @teddyframhein
      @teddyframhein  Před rokem

      This wheel was original equipment - the original owner specified basically every option, and this carbon wheel was the most expensive on offer at the time.
      The only downside for some (but I myself have grown to like it) is that I have the PDK buttons rather than separate paddles.

    • @williamjackson5357
      @williamjackson5357 Před rokem

      I have a 2014 Cayman Base with the pdk toggles on the steering wheel. Not a big difference to me between them and the paddles. I shift up or down on either side as opposed to the toggles shift only on one side of the steering wheel 🏎

    • @teddyframhein
      @teddyframhein  Před rokem

      Exactly. For autocross I prefer the buttons - I never need to think about which one does what.

    • @Suleimenoff
      @Suleimenoff Před rokem +1

      Yeah, I have the same wheel (full leather version) and I think it looks much better than the optional wheel (with the screen). The paddle shifters are not very practical, but just make sense from the design perspective.

    • @teddyframhein
      @teddyframhein  Před rokem +1

      It's hard to beat Porsche's flat six for overall response and sound. To be fair, the flat four would be just fine in isolation if the sixes never existed.
