- Square foot gardening is a great way for beginning gardeners to get started and be successful in growing their own gardens.
I started my first garden in 2008 after reading "Square Foot Gardening", and it's still the method I use in my Mesa, Arizona Garden.

Who doesn’t love Angela’s contents, no one. Everyone loves her calm, soothing and humble spirit. Thanks Angela for another great video
I was all over the place this year, but this guidance should help me get more organized and be more successful!
Thank you so very much for your support and for helping others to learn our simple method! Great video!
Thank you! I'm so glad I read Mel's book. I love the square foot gardening method.
Love your garden Angela, Thank you so much for your guide 🤗
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.
I just bought this book after buying my first raised bed! I love it. I started small...we will see.
Wonderful Garden! So beautiful, I think I’m going to give square foot gardening a try this year
I love hearing that. Give it a try. If you have questions, head to my blog and read those posts. Ask questions. Good luck!
Your garden looks great. I see you got a lot of plants planted and they look delicious. I learned a lot from your garden.
Thanks!
Love your tips, experience and ideas. I am a new gardener this year (spring 2023) and set up Sq. Ft. Gardening beds. I used bamboo poles with string from my local big box hardware store to make my grids. So far so good; cheap and easy.
Hello! I cannot even express how happy I am to have found you! We’ve got this bare property in northern AZ and I’ve searched for many o’gardeners over that way! I live and have gardened in Kentucky for years and am looking at growing in such a different space! I also enjoy square foot gardening for many things! A lot more moisture here so some things need a little more room to breathe aha, but it’s nice even still. :) Bless you!
Glad I could help. Your property sounds wonderful, best of luck to you.
I use sticks to mark out the foot markers, I use what I got, sometimes when I have it in use strings also. I know the basics of what I foot looks like, & the basics on how many plants to a foot of soil.
You have such an awesome channel!
your garden is so beautiful!
Thank you!
Very good method. Good soil mix too. I love gardening in raised beds. Very easy.
Agreed!
Thank you for such a great video of SFG Angela
Thanks Laura. As always, thanks to Mel for the inspiration.
Hi, I just started with square foot gardening :) Drip irrigation is amazing... thanks for the video
Yay!!! Love hearing that. Best of luck to you!
I tried this years ago without success, but I think I'm going to give it another go. I'm older now and don't have the strength or energy for nonsense work. Thanks for growing and sharing such a lovely garden.
Best of luck to you!
I'm defo going to try that!
Great. Good luck and happy planting!
I tried out the square foot gardening method last October and fell in love with it. I love that I have so many different spots to plant. 1 4x4 bed holds 16 different plants! I also love that each year, for me, I rotate crops with out having to think about. Like you I'm not a organized gardener at all and when I was trying all other methods I failed. With this because there's a grid and so many different squares I just go thru and plant whatever wherever. There's no having get out my books and see what was planted there before because the plants are always moving to new spots. I'll be making up a DIY watering grid soon once I have all the rest of my beds put in.
Kindred spirit for sure. Best of luck with your garden!
@@GrowingInTheGarden thank you!
I am a new gardener and I have a very small space I'm just trying to figure out what I can and can't plant together I'm not doing onions or potatoes in my raised beds but I have tons of other things that I hope grow lol
Goodevening dearest GardenAngel. Again You amazes me with your powerfully wisdom. Thanks for sharring this method. I have never hear of it. I do not have lots op space so I stick on the vertically climbing method. I have some runnerbeans. Some spinage climbing on bamboosticks with the branches of the littlebamboo on it. And I have some cherryTomatoes. Ciao Ciao . Greetings from Suriname. 💎💎💎💎💎🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
You are so welcome. thanks for watching.
I started square 30cm gardening, we are metric in South Africa. That is basically the same.
Nice! I've often wondered what it's called in other areas. Thanks for clueing me in!
Hi Angela, Thank you SO MUCH for all the great info you provide for us to grow successfully in the AZ desert! It’s 8-13, Is it too late for me to plant shallots?
You're welcome. I don't think it's too late. The weather hasn't changed much since July... still hot and dry. Hopefully we will get a monsoon here soon.
So glad to have found your page! I’ve been wanting a garden! Do you have a video on how you make your garden beds? Also I’m hesitant to start a garden because I have a dog, any ideas to keep her away?
Here's a blog post about them: growinginthegarden.com/gardeners-supply-cedar-raised-beds/
Barrier methods tend to work the best.
Thanks for the great video and the watering info! I just bought the SFG book and am excited to get started. One question, I have an existing (failed) in-ground garden bed that has cement curbing around it, can I put down weed cloth and fill with Mel's mix? I would be fine with building a box but the existing bed is in a good location.
It's worth a try.
I noticed what appears to be white 5 gal buckets buried in the beds. See about 2:50. What are these and how do they work? Wonderful video!
In bed Vermicomposting. I have an article on my blog and a video on my CZcams chanel about how I do it. growinginthegarden.com/vermicomposting-made-easy-in-bed-worm-composting/
I absolutely love your videos...they are very inspirational. I was kinda worried about using city water to water my garden. Do you collect water or use city water? Do you find that it makes a difference in the production of your garden? I have been collecting water for my garden, but not sure if it's absolutely necessary.
I collect rain water and use it, but the majority of my water is city water from the city of Mesa.
Hello Angela!!! Great information, as always, I enjoy your channel so much! I have applied many of your knowledge, been a beginner, brings you a lot of questions 😊speaking of, what are those white buckets you have in the beds? 🤔
Glad the info has been helpful. Here are links to a blog post and video about them: growinginthegarden.com/vermicomposting-made-easy-in-bed-worm-composting/

Looks like you have a couple of worm towers in your beds. Would love t hear about how those are working out.
They are working great! Here's a video with more info: czcams.com/video/991qDFd-uaI/video.html
Hi Angela, I really enjoy your channel. I was wondering what the white buried buckets are in your garden? Thanks Bob in Goodyear, Az

@@GrowingInTheGarden thank you. I found my answer in an earlier comment that I had not seen. Keep up the great content.
Square foot gardening is great but don't be afraid to go off the reservation and try new things as each garden is its own micro environment.
New sub here thanks for sharing
Thanks for subscribing and watching.
Hi there, thanks for the video! One question for you: what materials did you use to build the watering grid? Looks like 1/2" poly tubing and some kind of cross connector? Is your tubing pressure compensated somehow, and does it just have a single supply source?
Hi, here's a link to the garden grids: gim.ositracker.com/140976/10616 Use code Angela10 to save $10 on $100. I have them set up different ways. They are individual grids for each bed. If you can run each one off a main line they don't lose pressure. If you need to run them together you can do 3-4 before there is less pressure at the end.
Instablaster.
I just started gardening in St George…do you have a suggestion for a planting guide here?
Check with Star Nursery
What is the privacy hedges you were using on the side of your property to protect you from the neighbor? It seems like conifer, those do well in triple digit heat?
They are a cypress. They do fine, yes.
I’m ready to start my Yuma garden. My main reason for gardening is to grow organically a lot of greens. I’m going to grow from seeds as I have nowhere to raise starts. What seeds can I sow in January? What kind of bagged compost can safely be used in this area in Mel’s mix?
My blog has several articles that may be helpful, check under the monthly guide and the seed starting guide: growinginthegarden.com/when-to-start-seeds-indoors-a-seed-starting-guide-for-low-desert-vegetables/ as far as bagged compost - I've used Omni with success. Check with your local nursery to see what they recommend
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks so much Angela!
What size are the Grow Bags you use for potato growing? Do you have a favorite brand name and supplier to support?
You can use any size really, just plant the right amount of potatoes in the size you are using. These are the ones I use normally: amzn.to/3rZkHhE Here's a blog post with more information. growinginthegarden.com/how-to-grow-potatoes-in-containers/
Thanks again! Do you ever use 50% shade cloth for tomatoes or ???
Yes! Tomatoes definitely benefit from shade cloth, especially during this extreme heat. 50% is a good amount for tomatoes.
Hi Angela! Just bought my square foot garden book and notice they say not to put your raised beds by trees or shrubs due to possibly invading roots. Can you tell me what your thoughts are on how far away to plant from a tree or shrub?
I just had a consult today where this was a huge issue. I would say as much room as you can, especially when you are dealing with invasive roots such as Sissoo and Mulberry.
Great video.. How did you make the watering grid?
I purchased it. You can buy it from Amazon amzn.to/2yGKm7C

I’m new to Arizona. I’m wondering how you obtain soil by the yard? I’m in Yuma. I want to grow my own starts. When should they be started and then planted out?

Hi Angela!!! I would like to ask you if you have an organic recipe to kill leaf cutter ants. Thank you so much. Have a great day. Be safe. 😊
Hi! Good question. I'm still working on a good method for ants. I get asked about them often but haven't had them in my own garden, so I'm not sure what works.
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thank you Angela!!! You are lucky by not having ants in your garden. Have a great weekend!!!
Do you have issues with birds we have a ton of pigeons around as the neighbors have solar?
EXCELLENT ******* I SENT YOU A MESSAGE ABOUT MY TOMATO PLANTS BEFORE I WATCHED THIS. NO MORE TIPS FOR YOU YOU SINCE YOU KNOW IT ALL. LOL > CONGRATULATION BUT I WILL STILL DO THE VIDEO JUST FOR THE HECK OF IT. THANK YOU
Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel. I have seen several channels talking about SFG - but your vidoes are visually very easy to follow - nice work! I have not seen that type of irrigation system before. I gardened on a small scale up until about 8 or so years ago. Life and work just got in the way. Hope to get a fall garden in the ground this year using raised beds. I subscribed to follow along in your journey. If you get a chance, check out our small family homestead in NE Florida and consider subscribing. Thanks!
Thanks so much. Thanks for watching. I'll check yours out. Best of luck with your fall garden!
I wanted to get a raise bed. My patio is build of brick. Do you think my raise bed will be fine on top of brick flooring ??? I was going to put a Cardboard box on the bottom
Is there drainage? If water can drain down through the bricks it should be ok. You can also look into elevated raised beds as another option.
How do you deal with pests when things are growing so close together? Wont you miss catching them early?
It's helpful to keep an eye on things each day.
Where I can find the guides? I live in Sahuarita, AZ.
Here's a link to the grids:

Is it necessary to only use coarse vermiculite? The only available type I can locate near me is “fine”. Thanks!!
Vermiculite has been difficult to source the last couple of years. Try it in small amount and see how you like the finer texture. It's probably ok to use.
do you have problems with scorpions with all the plantlife you have in your garden?
Yes, we had them before I started my garden too. This area is prone to scorpions.
How do you make the water grid

How do you keep rats out?
When rats have been an issue in the past I set rat traps with peanut butter.
@@GrowingInTheGarden how long do they keep out until you see them return or new ones come back? I am dealing with them right now.
I had a problem several years ago. And didn’t see more until 2 years ago. I haven’t seen more since then.
I read it. rEALLY GOOD INFO...until you get to his mix. All his suggestions were WAYYYYYYYYYYY to expensive. Some are not available unless you have them truck freighted in.
I've been able to source similar ingredients locally. I love using his mix. growinginthegarden.com/best-soil-for-raised-bed-vegetable-gardening/
