  • In the backcountry there is no time for rest. This is another full day exploring one of the wildest places left in Colorado. Our basecamp was only a "stones throw" from a really productive high alpine lake. For those of you out there who have yet to experience this style of fishing... I BEG YOU... Please get out and experience this as soon as possible.. It is without a doubt one of my most cherished activates. I could go on all day about all the elements that make this so much fun. But to keep in short.. These kind of lakes tend to have some incredible scenery and even better fishing.
I had only read a few dated articles about West Ute Lake, but I gathered enough to feel confident in the gamble. By all respects this was a really big alpine lake and seemed to be rather deep as well. Once we actually got there, it was clear to see that the reports of big fish were true. Fish in these environments tend to grow a bit bigger than their creek going cousins, especially when the alpine lake has an abundance of bug life. We really got to see the upper tier of alpine trout. All of the Rio Grande Cutthroat were quite long and chubby! They are clearly having no issue finding food!

I stand corrected (from your first video on Ute Creek) - there are Rios in the Ute Creek basin; all the range assessment data that I've been able to find is several years old, and only shows core and conservation populations - segments of streams where the "purity" of the cutthroat are high, and typically there are no other species to compete or breed with them. The Rios in the Ute Creek area are a recreation population, which means they're regularly stocked - I would imagine it would be mostly in the lakes, and by air. I don't know if those lakes are deep enough for the fish to survive the winter - they might be. I don't think there were any in that area when I last fished Ute Creek, in 2011, but I never made it up to the lakes.
