    Mark Hamill is the voice of the Joker. When you read the Joker dialogue in the comics, you hear Hamill’s Joker. And I love how his Joker laughs, something which Monaughan did perfectly as well. He doesn’t have one laugh, he has many different laughs for different emotions, situations and reactions.
    Monaughan is the best comic to Live Action Joker. He plays Jerome: the maniac and anarchist, Jeremiah: the sinister and intelligent villain (who also looks the most like the Joker) & J: the villain who can’t live without Batman. The issue is that the he is the best Joker that never was. If he is able to play the Joker in the future, then he’ll be the best.
    Phoenix is the best answer to ‘what would the Joker look like in the real world’. He also plays the tragic nature of the Joker origin and the twisted psychology of the Joker very well.
    Ledger is the best Joker as an answer to ‘if Batman existed in the real world, what would the Joker be like?’ He also plays the ‘Agent of Chaos’ the best. He doesn’t care about anything other than doing the complete opposite of Batman.
    Nicholson is a good Joker in the sense of capturing the cheesiness/Silver Age nature of the Joker.
    Troy Baker is very good. He takes what works about Mark Hamill, and then puts his own twist on it. But Mark Hamill just has something better about it, that I can’t put my finger on. When Hamill can no longer do the voice of the character, Baker is the only next choice.
    Kevin Michael Richardson is a fresh take on the character. It feels like the Joker, and it’s believable that it could be the Joker, but it’s just not my Joker. His voice also has that sinister nature to it, which I really like.
    Leto is the best Joker as a criminal, as a gangster, and as someone who uses others to compete his goal, rather than going at it alone.
    Phoenix & Ledger are good real world Jokers, but they aren’t ‘comic’ Jokers. They’re characters aren’t designed to be that way, but they aren’t the Joker that you would expect to use Joker Gas, Hand Buzzers, team up with other villains and do things because he can.
    Where as Hamill and Monaughan, I can.

    • @StandardUserFromEarth

      Troy and Mark play the same joker but different versions of him. Mark obviously the best at the normal take on joker, but Troy was good at portraying a younger Hamill Joker, before he became fully twisted and before his relationship with batman fully manifested. Same with RCS and Conroy batman, with Conroy being the matured batman and RCS having that same character in a more amateur form, truly becoming batman after meeting joker.
      It's a flaw most people point to in origins that I see more as a fortunate accident. I could actually see Bat's and J be younger versions of their later self's in the series, without them feeling like a different interpretation.

  • @ashleychall
    @ashleychall Před 4 lety +291

    Late to the party, but I agree with Vee that "just a voice" does a disservice to Mark Hamill. As someone who has done voice acting, what Mark does with JUST HIS VOICE is amazing. When they started recording the Batman Animated Series, most of the voice actors sat down. Hamill was like "I have to stand. I have to move." Even with that small clip you showed of him in the booth shows how he was giving a full performance when voicing the Joker - we just didn't see it, though I'm sure the animators took cues for Hamill in their animation. Also, Mark Hamill has played the Joker for over thirty years. That counts for a lot with me.
    Also, Troy Baker voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Telltale series. So he has done both the Dark Knight & The Clown Prince of Crime.

      I agree, while yes Jared Leto could’ve been a good joker, ultimately it was the directors and character designers fault for not realizing his full potential. However the biggest problem is that his Role is absolutely worthless in the movie so if they had just didn’t bother or built him up better then it could’ve been more forgivable.
      Jack Nicholson is a completely different story where the film director and everyone involved knew how to treat Joker right. Personally he is still my favorite Joker as Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman. It’s a damn shame this video failed to bring him for a list of best jokers.

    Gotham is horribly underrated and one of the rare shows that for most of its run got better with every season. I don't think the final season was as good as season 4, but hey... It is what it is.
    And the shift to the second joker was a masterstroke, it gave us that gangster insanity that I had been craving.

    • @patrickrichardson2518
      @patrickrichardson2518 Před 3 lety +9

      @@Tomgirl87 I'd kinda have to disagree there. At the end of the movie, when he shoots DeNiro, he is fully formed. This is not a man who goes on to organize city-wide threats. He might be just stable enough to engage a sort of "army" of sycophants, but he doesn't have the mental capacity to organize and delegate, and his inability to distinguish reality from his own warped visions is only going to worsen as his medicine runs out and he really hits his downward spiral. Joaquin's Joker is not *criminally* insane, he's just *insane*. And do the math - he's in his mid 40's at best and Bruce is like what, 13, *MAX*? When Batman is at his physical peak in 10 or 12 years the Joker will be pushing 60. Now if Joaquin's Joker had trained in Muay Thai since the age of 9 and Bruce was nothing but a couch potato until he turned 20, Joker *might* have a fighting chance. But by the time this all plays out you've got one of the world's greatest martial artists in the prime of his life going toe to toe against a decidedly unathletic man made all the more frail by age and infirmity. There would be no fight, even if Joker was armed. Batman would have him disarmed before he knew it, twist his arm around his back, and it'd be over. Push comes to shove and all Batman has to do is break one of J's legs or ankle, or crack a couple of ribs and that is IT.
      Here's where the whole "copycat" theory gains traction in my book. Some impressionable, jaded youth sees this genuinely insane man (Joaquin's Joker) buck against society and adopts this idea of the Joker for his own campaign of crime and lawlessness. PERSONALLY I don't like the idea that what we saw was simply a precursor to the "more well-known Joker," but from a narrative perspective it at least can be plausible. Arthur Fleck prancing about the stairsteps for another 15 years before becoming Batman's arch-nemesis just ain't happenin' in this universe.

      Yeah, I agree. The movie was great! BUT you only see the Joker we all know and love in bits and slivers, like the talk show scene, the scene where he kills the guy in front of the midget and then messes with him, and when he shoots the asshole businessmen down, etc. that was my only “problem“ with the movie is that I wanted to see more of the fully formed joker once he finally reaches that point at the end of the movie but unfortunately it just sort of abruptly ends once he finally gets there

    I excuse the young generation for not understanding how phenomenal and iconic Jack Nicholson was as the Joker. He was the definitive example of Joker in live-action only being equalled by Mark Hamill's Joker voice-over performance in Batman The Animated Series. Jack Nicholson's Joker paved the way for every Joker performance that followed and I can say with certainty that without Batman 1989 we would not have what has become the modern dark interpretation of Gotham City.
    Jack Nicholson's Joker was the first time we saw an actor use prosthetics for the grin. Cesar Romero of course is the godfather of Joker performers and that fact alone gives him a place in a GOAT list.
    #1. Heath Ledger
    #2. Jack Nicholson
    #3. Mark Hamill
    #4. Cesar Romero
    #5. Joaquin Phoenix
    Cameron Monaghan is good however his performance is heavily influenced by Heath Ledger's Joker. A GOAT performance must stand alone and be unique to the actor playing the part. Even Jared Leto's Joker had too much of Heath Ledger's style in it most noticeably the voice.

    5. Jack Nicholson I like him but let's be honest he's not the type of actor that "disappears" into his roles. You are very aware you're watching Jack Nicholson. Not necessarily a bad thing, but this keeps him at 5 for me.
    4. Cesar Romero You have to take into account the time and setting of when his version took place. He had the laugh and the silly demeanor down. The joker at that time was not the homicidal maniac the later incarnations became, so he did the best that could be done at that time.
    3.Mark Hamill The voice most people hear in their heads for the joker when they read comics, it's perfect. As a side note I believe that he could have pulled off a live action joker in his younger days. He played a character called trickster in the 1990 flash television series that was kind of a joker-esque character and the voice he used was kind of a proto version of the voice he would later use in the animated series.
    1. & 2. This is where I kind of cheat. The differences between Phoenix's and Ledger's version are like night and day. As such, I can't pick between the two. Ledger's version was a fully realized joker capable of matching wits with batman, scaring the shit out of everyone around him and could cause controlled chaos everywhere around him seemingly without effort. While Phoenix was a joker who was seemingly a somewhat average unassuming man, perhaps even a good man who was constantly messed with and let down by the society surrounding him until he finally broke(assuming the whole movie wasn't a story made up in the characters head while locked in arkham, which is my take on that movie).

    I gotta say the best and most underrated Joker for me will always be Joe DiMaggio. Yes, Mark Hamill is the voice of the Joker for an entire generation and is still the voice I hear whenever I read old comics. Joe DiMaggio though embodied that ultimate joker. He captured the careless psychopathy, the humor, and the criminal aspect of the character perfectly. While that can easily be laid at the feet of good writers, it was also good to have a fresh take on the character. Yes, Mark Hamill is great, but there needs to be evolution to a character. Not every performance should be based on Hamill, not every performance should be Nicholson or Ledger. All too often we see performers try and emulate what made one version so successful but Joe just brought his own flair to the role. That's the same reason Kevin Michael Richardson is probably my third favorite after DiMaggio and Hamilll. I like versions of the character that doe their own thing or are unique, all 3 of which are
