  • We recently installed one of the first HP 5420W Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printers in North America and wanted to give some insight on how the latest iteration of the MJF technology works and what makes this such a good thing for the 3D printing industry. Spoiler alert - it will help further reduce costs, increase production speed, and broaden the application of industrial additive manufacturing.
There is a lot of background information and some personal viewpoints expressed in this video so please let us know your questions or opinions in the comments.

Can you show these machines in action? I'm interested in how they work, like the process, speed and end results.

Here from Canada, I love what you guys are doing! Are these parts tough like 3D printed parts or injection moulded ones?

Hey John, Thanks for the support! Since this is an early release machine, HP still hasn't officially published the material datasheet but we have found the parts are mechanically almost identical to the current PA12 properties. We are still big fans of the FDM technology but having a lower strength in the Z-direction is just part of the process - what makes these multi-jet fusion parts so cool is they are nearly isotropic so the part strength is nearly the same as an injection molded part.

With this new color tech is there still a place for FDM?

Yep. FDM printing is way cheaper and can be used with a wider range of materials. I work at I-SOLIDS and we still produce a lot of parts with FDM.

@@djimbus7117 Okay, provide some concrete numbers please, so we could appreciate how much cheaper it is.
