  • Alexandra Kosteniuk builds up a winning position against Koneru Humpy at the World Blitz Championships 2023 but she has to checkmate her with a bishop and knight at the end. Would she be able to do it? Also, this was the longest game of the event which lasted 218 moves!

My goodness, that was tense. Playing under the pressure of the clock with seconds left was remarkable. Valiant effort by Koneru who never gave and made her opponent work very hard. But full respect to Alexandra for this win!

Very difficult to checkmate with knight and bishop in blitz game! Brava to Alexandra!

What is indeed difficult in a B+N mating sequence is to drive the King to the corner with opposite colour of our Bishop. This is what happens at 19:13. Ng6 - key movement. After that, it is just following the same recipe, as you can see Alexandra playing faster and confident.

I played the end of match at one quarter speed, so I could try to follow it. Discovered the sound effects are great, the crowd noise sounds like some science fiction background music!

I have a profound sense of respect for those who can mate with a knight and a bishop. 🙏

12:56 playing Qb4 black could have claimed draw by threefold repetition.

Bishop knight checkmate is not as difficult as it seems. Because there is a pattern for this and you can practice and be so good at it.
The most difficult one is Rook vs Queen checkmate. If the opponent plays accurately, it is very difficult to prove as there is no any 'pattern' for the checkmate.

What I love about blitz games is that blunders have limited impact on the outcome of the game 😂❤
