  • With wear and corrosion being a thing I have to deal with on all of my cars, taking the time bring it all back to life is crucial; the steel subframe will rust, the control arms do the same, the aluminum power steering rack will oxidize, the rubber bushings will degrade, the power steering boots will dry up, and while we’re at it, an upgrade to all of this would be nice.
    With my MINI engine and transmission now fully built and ready to be installed in the Mini, it would be a shame throwing those beautiful parts into a super rusty and neglected engine bay. For that reason, I spent more than a week working on this subframe, and awaited multiple orders from both ECS tuning and Amazon to get this all done.

    If you have any seriously stuck bolts, that PB blaster penetrating fluid and a torch will be your best friend. An Oxygen-Acetylene torch would be the best torch to purchase, however it is rather expensive compared to a smaller handheld MAP torch. The small one is better than nothing.
    When replacing the bushings at the back of the control arm, they can replaced with fresh rubber bushings, or upgraded to the Alta Positive Steering Response System bushings. With these upgraded PSRS bushings installed in Position 1 (up and down), you will notice an increase of 1.5 degrees of caster which helps the steering wheel return to centre. With the bushings installed in Position 2, you will notice added caster similarly to position 1 (however only 0.75 degrees), however you will also get the added bonus of added anti-lift which preloads the suspension before the shocks compress; this is the position I have chosen for my bushings.

    I’m a fairly new car Diyr, decided to do the clutch on my teenage sons 2002 Cooper. I’ll be honest I’m following another CZcams video and hit a major wall when I discovered the video was a left hand drive car and I have a right hand drive. I’ve been stone walled for the last two hours as I couldn’t access the bolt and nut for the steering linkage. Thanks to your video - it was as simple as turning the wheel to gain better access. I feel pretty stupid to not put two and two together. Great video’s thanks for your help!

    Are you adding an extra beefy rear sway bar? because going stiffer in the front only adds a good push to a car that's already in need of more sway bar in the rear to balance it. I kept stock in front and still needed a big rear bar to make it handle more neutral. And the crash tube bolts - don't bother tightening until you get the front bumper bolted in - it will need some flex to line up the holes there, and the part that allows it are the two big bolts holding the crash tubes to the subframe.

    hope you had good ventilation doing the POR15. I did that to my R53 subframe two years ago, and wow does that stuff go to your head even with a fan blowing the fumes out of the area (open garage). Read the warning label on that can and be scared... but it sure works like a charm on rusty metal. Looks like the steering column is a piece of cake on the R56 - that was a bear to separate under the car on the older model. Rest looks very similar.

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  Před 5 lety

      Hey Yehudi, it is completely dependant on prep. The better you prep, the longer whatever coating you apply will last. This POR15 is more durable compared to typical undercoatings. To make this coating last longer, you can apply some rubberized undercoating. I am content with this finish, but will relay back with the long term durability.
