I miss how Devil Deal items, when picked up, actually caused Isaac to grunt as if he had been hit. It was a fantastic use of the "metaphor through mechanics" trope. And that haunting organ riff. It really emphasized that *you just made a deal with the fucking devil.*
Also forgive me if you explain your reasoning later but i'd have just used Guppy's Paw until I couldn't anymore. If memory serves you can still get soul heart deals in Flash Isaac and 90% of the "broken" runs in it involved nothing but soul hearts. ESPECIALLY with the Polaroid. Edit: also it'd mean Boss Trap rooms are always open for you, which in this version ALWAYS have Item Pedestals.

Hmm, i don't fully agree. I'm about 50/50 from the old and the new music. From rebirth I love all the main boss themes (Favorite is isaac/infanticide) as well as ambush but i do enjoy the most old style normal floor music, especially womb over its rebirth form. I do prefer new cathedral and of course the chest since it actually has music. There really isn't anything I hate from either soundtrack (except rebirth womb) It's just that I prefer some songs over others.

I agree with a few things people are saying here: Original Isaac was way harder than Rebirth, and the music is better (Danny Baranowsky did the music, whereas he wasn't able to come back for Rebirth due to some dispute). However, I don't agree that the graphics are better. Original Isaac does have its own more unique style for Steam games, but this hand-drawn style is very common among Flash games, especially low-effort ones, and easy to do. The character models and life bar are pretty lazily drawn. The brush tool in Flash is really easy to use and so most Flash games use this style. Anyone who's tried to make sprite art would know that while the sprites in Rebirth are not excellent quality, they do look really good. I think all those complaining about 'indie games having crappy sprites' would do well to look into the different kids of sprite styles and note the difference between lazy sprite art and good sprite art.
You're wrong, familiars are quite good, especially in Original Isaac. They only not so good against Isaac boss, but any other places they could be your only one damage up and it's always good to have bullet storm to finish bosses and their small minions like spiders that could be pain in the ass with high damage tears, but with poor tears fire rate.
Another thing with the original The Binding of Isaac is that there was no limit to soul hearts. I was playing ??? a long time ago, and I've been rolling with the Habit and the Book of Revelations plus a few recharge items and the Polaroid, and I was basically invulnerable. I had so many hearts that the game only counted the ones on display, and those never went down.
original isaac is good but i hate that it dosent have nearly as many synergies its crazy how many diffrent kind of tears u can end up with in afterbirth homing brimstone omg so much fun :D but no homing brimstone in original :(

Hey, Hutts. I thought I'd take note of a few things about Vanilla Isaac that you had opportunities to mention in this video but either didn't know about or just didn't mention: 1. Completely different music & sound effects from Rebirth (composed by Danny Baranowsky :D) 2. None of the items in Rebirth exist in Vanilla 3. Very buggy - a few items have false descriptions and, regardless, sometimes don't work as intended anyway 4. Curses are slightly different - Curse of the Maze and Curse of the Blind doesn't exist, Curse of the Lost adds rooms to the floor, and what you thought was Curse of the Lost is actually Curse of Darkness 5. Brimstone has a bug known as "Brimsnapping" where if you repeatedly spam a direction after firing the initial shot, you do a lot more damage than if you were to let the beam run its course - otherwise, not as good as Rebirth 6. You can walk through tiny horizontal gaps between spike sets, which I don't think is possible in Rebirth 7. Champion enemies are less varied, and don't have specific effects or drops for each champion type 8. There is no way to get to the I_AM_ERROR room other than using Telepills 9. There's a bug where if you place a bomb, leave the room, and come back, the explosion will be bigger 10. Blue flies' targeting AI is worse - they will target invincible stationary enemies and spike blocks 11. Notched Axe is worse - only breaks one rock at a time instead of continuing to break rocks as long as it's used 12. Friends 'Till The End doesn't exist in Rebirth 13. You can't reroll the Cube of Meat - if you reroll it just turns into the Cube of Meat again These are just the things I could come up with relating to what's shown in the video. There are almost infinitely many more things that I could have mentioned here, but they're either irrelevant to the video or otherwise unnecessary to mention here. Keep making vids, man. Pretty sure you could still diagonally squeeze through spikes that arent completely surrounding one square actually. And homing was kind of not worth it at all.
For me vanilla isaac is way easier to beat then rebirth. A soulheart on the first floor was almost an instant win, to get a devildeal on floor 2. And since the Devildeal pool is so small, you can almost always get at least one broken item by floor 4
yeah, but rebirth is a lot easier in terms of just gameplay and not getting hit. The enemies are easier, and seriously, hardmode is a joke. whereas in the old one, the hard mode ("eternal mode") was very challenging, and actually felt like a change.
Kingsley Whitlock i think my first ever successful run was mom's knife^^ none of us started out being good, but the more often you beat the game, the easier everything gets (trust me, i play touhou... well, i struggle, rather. but touhou probably inspired some of the bullet hell patterns that are used by some rebirth bosses :) )
Watching someone see this and be like "hand drawn" but in reality it was just Flash and flash games just looked that way. So poorly optimized, and resource intensive, especially when you consider that this game can have a lot of stuff going on and flying around the screen and yeah. It's funny to say "oh more colours" when it's actually not true. There's far more colours, and animations going on screen in Rebirth (just look at the burning basement for example, or the flooded caves with ripple effects). The reality is that it just wasn't optimized, and done in a way that made it run rougher unfortunately... mind you Flash is the only way Edmund knew how to make games, so he had to do it that way. Although I have my gripes with Nicalis, they do at least know how to code a game proper and make them run smooth, and the extra pixel charm just makes sense when the game is supposed to be a retro throw back to games like the original LoZ. The only thing I can honestly praise about Vanilla is the soundtrack, which is better, and it's a shame that it didn't get remixed proper in 8-Bit form.
Without "Wrath of the Lamb" (which added the Catedral, the Chest and the Sheol) familiar help you deal more damage with no consequence (no Isaac and ??? boss battles) so Brother Bobby, Sister Maggy and Steven are very good items.
The main thing I missed in old Isaac is music. The soundtrack in basement might be the best soundtrack of all Isaac versions and all floors. And yeah, now when Repentance is out, they bring some really cool old stuff back. For instance, guaranteed item in Boss Challenge rooms (except it's harder to get in there now)

My Innermost Apocalypse is absolute top tier in Wrath of the Lamb DLC, but everything else were fantastic too. I like the Rebirth one too but I really can't wait Repentance getting back its mod support because of the music. It'll be in the next update... can't wait!

Oh man, this gives me flashbacks! I remember finding the original Isaac back when it came out and my mind was blown over how awesome it was and I'm so happy that the series continued. One of my favorite things about the original Isaac was the music. It's so wild to remember that it was flash based at one point. I remember using joy2key to play it with my Xbox controller.

That was a wild land , shot speed wasn't a stat back then , cathedral didn't exist and you always fought satan . the item pool was very limited and you would get an hp up from bosses more than 60% of the time , the rooms weren't designed like they are now , a lot of rooms were just empty and we didn't have many traps . Also sometimes you would get too many range down pills and you coudln't hit a host in the middle of the room so you just lost ( edmund fixed that when it happened to him tho) . Oh yeah and famine was like one of the hardest floor 1 bosses since widow and lil haunt didn't exist back then .
I'll do you one better. Remember the Original Vanilla Vanilla Isaac, before the Halloween update? Satan + Sheol didn't exist, the game always ended at It Lives! Brimstone didn't exist, Mom's Knife didn't exist. I think Eve was added in that update, too. I remember 100% completing the game before the Halloween update came out, I was so pumped for more content.
The music in this is so incredibly much better. For a while, I was actually unable to watch Rebirth Let's Plays because I couldn't stand how generic the music in Rebirth is. The sound effects, too. So much better in the original Isaac.
57:15... when ever you take red heart damage when you don't have enough red hearts to take the damage it will refill the heart to a whole one. It's always done that, pretty sure it even still does that in Afterbirth+
I'I be honest when soy milk comes i usually avoid it, i can see why you like it but soy milk when getting it makes you shoot a lot of tears but it decreases your damage to (i think) -1 making it hard to kill easy enemies most of the time and just being impatience when trying to kill a boss. please don't lash at me I'm just saying.
I notice nobody mentioned the glitch concerning challenge rooms: Paus the game before the first wave spawns and it'll repeat the spawning sound until all 2 or 3 (depending on roomtype or floordepth) waves are forced to spawn. Amusing/harsh little additional challenge one can take on in those rooms.
another thing to note is how chasing items, such as super meat boy were super aggresive back in this game, and the challanges were diffrent, like you had one where you had super meat boy be your main form of attack, but you still could shoot as i dont remember if blindfold was a thing
Ahh, I used to play the hell out of this maybe five or six years ago. I was really depressed and had trouble getting into games because they felt too heavy for me to really get invested in, but the Binding of Isaac was quick to start up, easy to learn, and bucketloads of fun to play. I'm also a really big fan of the morbid, dark, yet still kind of hilarious tone the game has. I have 219 hours of playtime on the original, and 304 on Rebirth, but I still haven't done all there is to do in them. For some reason I'm having a lot of trouble with the dark boy achievement in both games. :p
let me explain to you that pageant boy gives about 7 - 20 coins to the most likely chance. which isnt much of a power boost. re-rolling could get him much better things.
You got the angel room on the second floor because of a glitch were if you got devil rooms on the previous run without restarting the game, it treats it as if you were offered a devil deal this run but didn't take it, which gives you an angel room chance.
As a long time player of isaac.. it's obvious why you're so popular because I knew barely half of what you did the first few years I played* and you're much more entertaining edit: played as a teenager*
There's a weird Brimstone-glitch in vanilla Isaac where you can just hit everything in the room by quickly alter where you aim as you fire. They removed it in Rebirth.
The artstyle of the original is better than the new pixely one imo. Pretty much all indie games go for the shitty old style pixely art style and I liked isaac because it had that scrappy hand drawn feeling, it was a breath of fresh air. Oh well, rest in peace originality.
thats flash free games though you almost never see that type of artstyle in a game you have to pay for pixel is the most easiest and simplist way for indie dev's to gain popularity.
I honestly think the pixel art style in Rebirth is more unique than most out there. The outlining, shading and shapes of everything are very unique in general compared to a lot of other pixel art styles in games.
i feel like he has no idea how the pixel sprites affect the game. its not the hand drawn sprites that make flash run slower. its the flash just tending to run poorly , esentially how adobe software runs poorly on any device no matter how powerfull, its really just flash not being very stable.. they changed the engine for rebirth completely. vanilla isaac was way less colorfull than rebirth meaning color doest affect the game speed at all. in generall unless you have very bad hardwear , sprites even if they are highres shouldt be a problem nor should their color be. another reason why rebirth runs better is because its optimized way better.

Watching someone see this and be like "hand drawn" but in reality it was just Flash and flash games just looked that way. So poorly optimized, and resource intensive, especially when you consider that this game can have a lot of stuff going on and flying around the screen and yeah.
It's funny to say "oh more colours" when it's actually not true. There's far more colours, and animations going on screen in Rebirth (just look at the burning basement for example, or the flooded caves with ripple effects). The reality is that it just wasn't optimized, and done in a way that made it run rougher unfortunately... mind you Flash is the only way Edmund knew how to make games, so he had to do it that way.
Although I have my gripes with Nicalis, they do at least know how to code a game proper and make them run smooth, and the extra pixel charm just makes sense when the game is supposed to be a retro throw back to games like the original LoZ.
The only thing I can honestly praise about Vanilla is the soundtrack, which is better, and it's a shame that it didn't get remixed proper in 8-Bit form.
I really prefer this old style over the pixellated style of the new game.

@Drinking Straw Me too! I used to play the old isaac just because it looked so good compared to those pixelated bosses from the new one
Without "Wrath of the Lamb" (which added the Catedral, the Chest and the Sheol) familiar help you deal more damage with no consequence (no Isaac and ??? boss battles) so Brother Bobby, Sister Maggy and Steven are very good items.
The only thing I remember from the original Isaac is that Wiggle Worm used to be and artifact, now it's a trinket.
The main thing I missed in old Isaac is music. The soundtrack in basement might be the best soundtrack of all Isaac versions and all floors.
And yeah, now when Repentance is out, they bring some really cool old stuff back. For instance, guaranteed item in Boss Challenge rooms (except it's harder to get in there now)
My Innermost Apocalypse is absolute top tier in Wrath of the Lamb DLC, but everything else were fantastic too. I like the Rebirth one too but I really can't wait Repentance getting back its mod support because of the music. It'll be in the next update... can't wait!

Oh man, this gives me flashbacks! I remember finding the original Isaac back when it came out and my mind was blown over how awesome it was and I'm so happy that the series continued. One of my favorite things about the original Isaac was the music. It's so wild to remember that it was flash based at one point. I remember using joy2key to play it with my Xbox controller.
Graphics and musics on the original vanilla version are much better.
There is a mod that replaces the music in Rebirth with the music in the original Issac.

That was a wild land , shot speed wasn't a stat back then , cathedral didn't exist and you always fought satan . the item pool was very limited and you would get an hp up from bosses more than 60% of the time , the rooms weren't designed like they are now , a lot of rooms were just empty and we didn't have many traps . Also sometimes you would get too many range down pills and you coudln't hit a host in the middle of the room so you just lost ( edmund fixed that when it happened to him tho) .
Oh yeah and famine was like one of the hardest floor 1 bosses since widow and lil haunt didn't exist back then .

I'll do you one better. Remember the Original Vanilla Vanilla Isaac, before the Halloween update? Satan + Sheol didn't exist, the game always ended at It Lives! Brimstone didn't exist, Mom's Knife didn't exist. I think Eve was added in that update, too.

For a while, I was actually unable to watch Rebirth Let's Plays because I couldn't stand how generic the music in Rebirth is.

I'I be honest when soy milk comes i usually avoid it, i can see why you like it but soy milk when getting it makes you shoot a lot of tears but it decreases your damage to (i think) -1 making it hard to kill easy enemies most of the time and just being impatience when trying to kill a boss. please don't lash at me I'm just saying.

I notice nobody mentioned the glitch concerning challenge rooms: Paus the game before the first wave spawns and it'll repeat the spawning sound until all 2 or 3 (depending on roomtype or floordepth) waves are forced to spawn. Amusing/harsh little additional challenge one can take on in those rooms.

another thing to note is how chasing items, such as super meat boy were super aggresive back in this game, and the challanges were diffrent, like you had one where you had super meat boy be your main form of attack, but you still could shoot as i dont remember if blindfold was a thing

Ahh, I used to play the hell out of this maybe five or six years ago. I was really depressed and had trouble getting into games because they felt too heavy for me to really get invested in, but the Binding of Isaac was quick to start up, easy to learn, and bucketloads of fun to play. I'm also a really big fan of the morbid, dark, yet still kind of hilarious tone the game has.
I have 219 hours of playtime on the original, and 304 on Rebirth, but I still haven't done all there is to do in them. For some reason I'm having a lot of trouble with the dark boy achievement in both games. :p

On it's own, it was probably a bad decision, but in the end it was actually the right decision, as he still ended up with 99 cents anyways.
let me explain to you that pageant boy gives about 7 - 20 coins to the most likely chance. which isnt much of a power boost. re-rolling could get him much better things.

You got the angel room on the second floor because of a glitch were if you got devil rooms on the previous run without restarting the game, it treats it as if you were offered a devil deal this run but didn't take it, which gives you an angel room chance.

There's a weird Brimstone-glitch in vanilla Isaac where you can just hit everything in the room by quickly alter where you aim as you fire. They removed it in Rebirth.
The artstyle of the original is better than the new pixely one imo. Pretty much all indie games go for the shitty old style pixely art style and I liked isaac because it had that scrappy hand drawn feeling, it was a breath of fresh air. Oh well, rest in peace originality.

thats flash free games though you almost never see that type of artstyle in a game you have to pay for pixel is the most easiest and simplist way for indie dev's to gain popularity.

I honestly think the pixel art style in Rebirth is more unique than most out there. The outlining, shading and shapes of everything are very unique in general compared to a lot of other pixel art styles in games.
i feel like he has no idea how the pixel sprites affect the game. its not the hand drawn sprites that make flash run slower. its the flash just tending to run poorly , esentially how adobe software runs poorly on any device no matter how powerfull, its really just flash not being very stable.. they changed the engine for rebirth completely. vanilla isaac was way less colorfull than rebirth meaning color doest affect the game speed at all. in generall unless you have very bad hardwear , sprites even if they are highres shouldt be a problem nor should their color be. another reason why rebirth runs better is because its optimized way better.
