Dylan is just OK here. He's a mediocre harp player at best. WHY do people rave about him ? I admire a lot of his work and the groundbreaking things he's done in music, but people raving about performers because they're desperate for heros is pathetic.
I love Dylan but I get your point. He’s one of the greatest popular songwriters in American history. Even more of a poet than a lyricist. And well most of the songs were hung onto relatively simple, musical structures, he did have a knack for identifying good hooks, and sometimes even delightful melodies. But he is a C+ level singer, who interprets his own work very well, despite a poor voice. He is a B minus level harmonica player. And a C minus level guitarist. But he is able to perform beyond his musical limitations when doing his own songs. And he brings a tremendous authenticity, and a unique and compelling charisma onto the stage. There is a shyness about him that almost makes it seem he was forced on stage at gunpoint. But it makes his performances more poignant.
@@kshepard52 - Agree that Dylan, in this video, is OK, but not really at his best as the song was a bit slow for my taste. However, I assure you, Mr. Shepard, I am not one of those "raving people/desperate for heros." The performance is still worthy of appreciation especially seeing as how much he has added to the American/World music scene during his 60+ year career. I know. I was there for it all beginning in the early 60's when I first heard of him in NYC as an acoustic folk singer playing in Greenwich Village up through his progress into electrified performances and all that has followed since. Have some respect...
Page 141 of Clinton Heylin’s “Trouble in Mind” records: “You do a rehearsal in the afternoon prior to the Grammy’s, for the cameraman and the soundman. While we were doing that, someone in the production staff asked Dylan… would he cut the tune short for production purposes? In other words, it was like four minutes and they wanted it three. And he said no. Dylan didn’t just say no. He set about delivering a performance the evening of the 27th that would go on to the crack of doom. Not only was he back to his blistering best, but just when it seemed the song must end, he stepped back to let Tackett take a lead, before locating a harmonica from somewhere inside the penguin suit he was wearing for the occasion, proceeding to blast the news straight on through. And still he found the time and energy for one more chorus, on which he spelt it out for all to hear - not ‘it may be the Lord’ but ‘it can be the Lord’! The whole thing clocks in a couple of seconds shy of six minutes thirty, making that production staff rue the day he asked Dylan to truncate his whole reason for performing at the Shrine” I highly recommend the book which gives a real insight into Bob’s gospel years.
Thank God he did what he wanted! One of his greatest performances! But you also have to remember, it was a time when you could perform without worrying about the short attention span of the public and everyone running to their phones to make comments or read comments.
The nerve of some jerkwad nobody telling Dylan to cut it short? LOL, I'm surprised Dylan didn't do a 12 minute version. . (sort of like Dylan was telling that production staff member that he don't serve him. . Good on Dylan)
Lol. Just a case of supreme ego narcissism. What about the time he petulantly STOLE from others on the bill that night. Self obsessed, angry little, proselytizing, religious arsehole (in those days).
The Dolphin You made your case. Dylan has risen far higher by standing for something (or Someone) that is not popular with today’s “modern” culture. Good for him. You have to serve somebody.

Dylan's character arc in the 70's, from the still reclusive post-crash countryman in New Morning to the return to the wild bard lifestyle in '74 and Rolling Thunder and his emotional low point in Bloond on the Tracks to the ending as a born again Christian in Slow Train Coming, is kind of insane and unpredictable.

@@CrowMadame The point of the song is it’s a binary option. Serve the devil or the Lord. If you’re serving yourself you are in fact serving the devil. Bad choice.
When this album (and cassette tape of course) Slow Train Coming came out it felt like a Dylan for a new generation. Like a fine wine.
Page 141 of Clinton Heylin’s “Trouble in Mind” records:
“You do a rehearsal in the afternoon prior to the Grammy’s, for the cameraman and the soundman.
The whole thing clocks in a couple of seconds shy of six minutes thirty, making that production staff rue the day he asked Dylan to truncate his whole reason for performing at the Shrine”
I highly recommend the book which gives a real insight into Bob’s gospel years.
Thank God he did what he wanted! One of his greatest performances! But you also have to remember, it was a time when you could perform without worrying about the short attention span of the public and everyone running to their phones to make comments or read comments.
Noel Moore Brilliant!
Living in fear and isolation, or courage and togetherness. You gotta choose a way. You gotta serve somebody.
Absolutely goddamned right.
Superb. One of the very best performances of this song
if not the very best. Nobody does it like Bob Dylan.
For me as a born again christian, it is no suprise that this is among the best stuff of CCM. This music was made before I was born. I "re-discovered" it years ago. Bob's christian music is one of my all time favs, along with the late Keith Green, who was a friend of Bob.
The execution here is incredible. He stays incredibly still for most of the song, allowing your attention to be primarily on the lyrics.
I think most attention is on the bass player.
@@oinkooink The great Tim Drummond! He played on many great albums and tours of great artists...

Rest in peace, Tim.

thats amazing
crazy to see dylan this way as well
completely out of his element but its almost as if someone said you gotta get this one right its probably one of the most important things u did on tv live and he just aced it vocally
this was probably one of the last amazing vocal performances he did before his voice went away too
total respect what a legend
doesn't take a christan to notice he's knocking it out of the park here
Nah. It's no big deal. Just another day for The Zimmie. Still hits them out of the park 43 years later.
LOVE THIS SONG AND BOB DYLAN I SERVE FATHER GOD ONLY😇
Dylan always on point......."The Truth will set you free"
The answer is blowin' in the wind...
This is so damn good and Kristofferson was digging the hell out of it too ! 💙
I saw that!
Yes, he's in front row. Probably invitation
noticed it too; kristofferson was going apeshit on this, love seeing that
i think i saw johnny cash have a go at it too or were my eyes betraying me?
Pat Boone too!
@@SimonRobeyns Cash was there. No mistaking him-he was a tallest 6’2”dude I’ve ever seen. Big guy. Probably wore cowboy boots that could get him up to 6’3”. Obviously a totally recognizable face/head as well.
The come to Jesus years. Love you long time Bobby.
There are no other words suitable for Bob Dylan, other than, he is blessed🎙🎶⚘️🙏
I never get sick of watching this.
this is such a great performance 0:59 spitting on his stage
err.. no...
Why is that so great? I have a friend who attended a Dylan concert ten years ago, and he was so contemptuous of the audience that she walked out 1/3 of the way through. But you lemmings somehow feel you have to genuflect. Get a life.
That was very intentional.
If he'd a said "rock n roll addict SPITTIN on the stage..."
Tell it like it is🎉❤, Mr. Dylan
Bobby Dylan preaching the truth right here. Joshua told the ancient Israelites to "choose this day who you will serve!"
Choose Yeshua/Jesus and He will transform you from a sinner into a saint by grace through faith.
The most "blistering" performance of this cut that Dylan ever did.
No truer words have ever been spoken!
What an amazing groove. Great rhythm section. Tim Drummond on bass. (Neil Young, CSN)
and don't forget Tim played with Conway Twitty, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Crosby & Nash, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Ry Cooder, J. J. Cale, Mother Earth, Lonnie Mack, Miles Davis, B.B. King, Joe Cocker, Albert Collins, Joe Henry, Jewel
Along with Slow Train Coming
this performance is almost 40 years old. out of ALL the songs, this is what he played.
theres a message in there that Bob wanted to send.
message received. loud and clear. the times, they are a changin'...
@@sharonsmith2771 hows about looking at the 5th comment down from yours. that should clear it up.
what is the message that dylan was conveying?
which changes?
in which specific way were the ‘times changing’?
i wasn’t born in bob dylan’s generation, but i am interested in any explanation that anyone can provide for context to help me understand🙏
Best TV direction of a guitar solo I've ever seen. Rarely do you see the guitar actually being played during a televised solo.
One of the greatest songs ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sista’s giving me chills!
Yes, indeed.
I worship our Great, Almighty Lord G-D, creator of Heaven and Earth, and the Entire Universe!
His Light Shines Upon Every- Thing, as HE WAS ,HE IS, AND WILL BE!!’
Happy 78 to Bob, this song is just at it really is, you have to serve somebody
Check out his just masterpiece Alejandra, the first in many years titled 'Murder Most Fowl.' Very moving to say the least.
79 now!
83 now…
Wonderful Performance By Rock Legend Bob Dylan Singing His Great Song Gotta Serve Somebody A Excellent Straight Up Rock Song That Totally Rocks And Needs To Be Fully Cranked Up All The Way To Full Maximum Volume.
Boy! He's tellin' 'em and delivering the news!!
I don't know what video you watched but I didn't see him throw a single paper.
eblackbrook The Good News, aka the Gospel. Read John in the Bible about God’s only Son Jesus Christ being the Light of this world and loving us so much He died for us. And rose from being dead! And, He’s coming again! Beautiful, and life changing. Easter is coming, when we celebrate His Resurrection!😊🌷☀️
Just plain powerful!
This video just blew my mind. I had no idea that Dylan had this much nasty soul and grit. What an amazing band chemistry! I love the lyrics too, but then again, it's Dylan. Thank you, NanchatteDesu, for posting!
i ove who he is singing to, the same people he is singin about....oh the irony of it all , i bet he chose this song to admonish them. RIP BOB!
This caused quite a stir back in the day, me a long-haired Jesus freak I loved it.
"Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Amen, Joshua 24:15
Amen....
discovered this song a few weeks ago from The Sopranos, its unbelievable. What a powerful lyricist.
That bass player has the groove by the throat and he ain't letting go!
Him and Keltner had a greasy, slinky bottom.
True. We all serve somebody. I answer to only One Person!
Serve yourself.
@@CrowMadame The point of the song is it’s a binary option. Serve the devil or the Lord. If you’re serving yourself you are in fact serving the devil. Bad choice.
Great song! And truthful.
Dylan spells it out for you.
You Gotta Serve Somebody! Good or Evil? Which side are you on?
God Bless Bob Dylan!
When this album (and cassette tape of course) Slow Train Coming came out it felt like a Dylan for a new generation. Like a fine wine. This is a moment in time I remember after repeat listens on cassette. The Grammys as I remember, and watching and listening on a big tube tv in living color as they used to say. I remember a lot more lights than this, very integrated into the music, to make it an event that I remember the details of even now about forty years later.

Thank you. I don't get how the christians are owning this song. Art is the interpretation of the recipient. This is art. The words are poetic.
Thx for posting The Lyrics
Great Lyrics by Dylan as usual! No wonder he won an Award for his life’s work. He deserves it. 👏🏻
But Bob changed its lyrics during this performance. A lot.
Bassist Tim Drummond really getting into it!
Some other live performances he done with dylan are amazing
Preach it!!!

Olá! Lancei um vídeo sobre Bob Dylan onde falo sobre o disco que contém esta canção. Fica o convite. Talvez goste.
My first time listening to this song. It's Powerful. I can relate.
I discovered this song by watching this performance live in 1980. I remember asking my mother what it meant (I was 13 and kind of dense.) I was very scornful of it because I thought he was mocking. But when she explained it, I could see the logic in it.
(Note: I'm not 13 anymore, but I am still kind of dense.)
How did she explain it?
@@vinuthomas2814 She basically said that what he was saying is true. It may be the Devil, or it may the Lord, but you've got to serve somebody. Though the notion is not original with Bob Dylan, he introduced it to a lot of people who had never thought of it in those terms.
@@paulschrum9222 and that it’s inescapable.
